This game was an actual scam in arcades. Literally zero indication of how to actually play it, just proceeding like normal will 100% make the game impossible.

Nowadays that's actually kind of where the appeal lies, it's satisfying to learn how the game fucks with you and play around it to beat it at its own game.
It also helps that the rank bullshit accidentally made a pretty compelling dynamic game with a lot of reactive choices, I like the game because it's comparatively very unroutable. Unless you literally never make a mistake and do everything almost frame perfect, at the absolute least where your score 1ups are going to lie is not going to be exactly the same so where you time the suicides involves a lot of real time decision making. In practice a lot more things than that will be drifting so you also do a lot of things on the fly based on how well you kept rank down, like deciding whether or not to restart your medal chain and when to pull out all the stops and just go full power for the rest of the run.
