How tf is this game so highly rated, particularly for its writing?
I appreciate it touches on themes not generally touched on in as much detail in video games, but the actual writing is awful.
I have a high tolerance for slow-paced games and media in general, but so much of it is just completely unnecessary filler that doesn't add anything to the worldbuilding or experience and what little gameplay there is is complete garbage.
I feel like most of the reviews praising it are just teenagers who think it's incredibly deep and just to have a hyper niche game they can praise.

I'm not really sure what exactly are you criticizing about the writing, but as the other anon who has played that and won't just call it woke tranny slop, I'll hear you out. Personally I enjoyed the stories and liked the twists. Sure it is slow, especially if you talk to everyone, but it's that type of game. If you don't like reading tons of text, then it really isn't for you. Did you miss the walking simulator tag? Only thing that was bit too heavy handed for me was the HK shit, even if it touches on actual real world issues. You didn't need to beat me to death with it, I got it just fine. Also I really liked how trying to "save" bad people just gets everyone killed.

I love text heavy games, I'm 100% a storyfag, and I'm totally fine with walking simulators - it's just nearly all the moment to moment dialogue is at best filler, most of it is just completely unnecessary. The quality of the written dialogue genuinely feels to me like someone fresh out of school who did creative writing and wanted to write a deep story about trauma, but doesn't really know how to tell a story, then needlessly made it into a non-linear narrative that makes vague references to things that aren't ever really followed up on. There's a decent story in there somewhere, but it's just drowned in bland nonsense that ultimately just comes across as a bit pretentious - and generally I'll be the first to defend a game others view that way

I can kinda get what you're saying now. It really is a long game for a walking sim, I checked and my "playthrough" took 10 hours. You could easily shave it under 7h if some of the larger filler was taken away. But I disagree on the moment to moment dialogue, almost all of the dialogue with the sisters felt like it was trying to immerse you into the world, or made you question what exactly was going on. Then the parts in the past with the family and the all-mothers past did get kinda jarring at points, but then we also got the good stuff like the father or the illuminati. I felt like all plot threads got followed upon, and to be frank I really liked the game, but I do also remember being glad it was over when it ended. And I might have cried a bit.

Now if you want to read something actually pretentious and badly written, read/play Necrobarista. It's just pure mediocrity throughout. Pirate it or get it for pennies, because it ain't worth much more.
