Western nations claiming ownership of African artifacts that African countries currently have the means and desire to preserve and display in local museums is actually a pretty big problem. Most Egyptian artifacts were just take from Egypt during Napoleon's expedition or British colonial rule, and the consensus is since they were taken by dead people it's okay if they're never returned. There are definitely places in Africa where artifacts are safer outside of the country, but most of North Africa especially places like Morocco and Egypt can easily be trusted with their owj artifacts.

When we left artifacts in their native third-world countries, they just ended up selling or (more often) destroying them. They are only safe in western museums. I think it's within everyone's best interest for us to hang onto them until the places they came from decide to behave like real nations.

I don't buy the "africans were a super advanced civilization it's da wypipo fault" ideas but I do believe they are right when they say that Africa was exploited the fuck out in cruel and inhumane ways, and when it wasn't trendy to remain a colonial power anymore they simply left with barely any support to help the inhabitants adapt to the modern world and the international community, when they weren't still involved at least.
