Defense in platform fighters is just infinitely more interesting to me. There's active counterplay during pretty much every part of a combo or string, even if it's not always enough to get you out of it or survive the final hit.

What these "we're gonna make these games more accessible" fighting game devs always fail to understand is that, unless you plan on forcefully segregating the sweats from the casuals like Arc Raiders does, no amount of dumbing the game down is going to prevent people who play lots of fighting games from shitting on the people who aren't.

It's a bad buggy bloated mess of a fighting game that is only fun if you're a combo degen that sits for 5 hours just labbing combos.
Like the game fundamentally fails at being a decent onboarding experience, people may download it because it's free but instantly get filtered because a tag fighter is hard as shit to get into and the combos are so long you can watch a shitty youtube essay while it happens to you, the lack of any decent tutorials also hurts the game.

Having played it for a while and gotten to Grand Master in the open beta, I think the game is pretty fun but has a lot of head-scratching elements.

Take the lobby system for example. Instead of just queuing for matches like most games, you join a lobby with an avatar where you can queue, and then physically move the avatar to a play station when you find a match. Like a virtual arcade. The developers said they wanted to encourage communication and making friends, but actually interacting with anyone in the lobby is pretty hard. Interacting with a person you can add them as a friend to message later or block them. There doesn't seem to be an option to actually challenge someone. You know, like you might if you were at a physical arcade. You can't even sit down at one of these physical setups to wait, you get assigned a cabinet when your queue pops.

Then there's the design. At a high level, the game has absurdly oppressive okizeme and mixups, a bevvy of offensive and defensive options, and really long, inventive combos. I find this to be a positive, and it's actually been pretty cool seeing what combinations of characters/fuses can do, even when it's my opponent doing it. But they made it have no motion inputs, which makes the game actually pretty hard to play on a fight stick. So they want to appeal to casuals... with an extremely complicated fuse/tag system that rewards deep combo knowledge. They really have to pick a lane.

Then there's the costumes. I actually like some of the costumes, but they're extremely expensive. And that's only IF you're able to actually buy them. They have a Fortnite style daily rotating shop but it means that if you just want to buy a single costume instead of paying like $70 for a bundle of a few costumes, you have to check the store every day. I'm fine with buying costumes but the prices and the FOMO tactics have totally turned me off.

Hit the character limit but to add on to this I think the game will be really good after like, 2 years. They said they want to release a new character every 2 months or so (Correlating with arbitrary "Seasons") and that means after 2 years the roster will be much more respectable and probably have a lot more fan favorite characters. I don't really know League of Legends, but a friend of mine says that the base roster heavily leans towards characters from the Arcane show. Personally the characters have a good visual and playstyle variety, but I can see why a fan of the source material might be disappointed. Fundamentally, every tag fighter gets exponentially more interesting the more characters it has, and the characters they have released since the Open Beta have been pretty well designed. There's also the balancing and the general bugginess, which does seem to be improving though it's hard to tell how a game will be balanced/bug tested in the future. I will say, most of the changes have been pretty good at curbing the worst excesses of good characters while giving new tools to characters that needed it. Darius getting a new way to bait parry in a kit that desperately needed it was a great change and if they keep things going in that direction then everything will probably work out.

But they really need to figure out who they want this game to be for. You probably can't make a 2D fighting game with League of Legends player numbers, but you can make a game with a dedicated and passionate fanbase that'll stick around for 15 years. I guess we'll see.

Not really. Dragonball Fighters was a 3v3 tag game and did really well, selling 10 million copies and a ton of DLC. And before that, Marvel VS Capcom was a huge series before the Infinite debacle. There's clearly a market for team fighting games, and more than that I think it makes sense if you're adapting a game where team play is a major element. Again, not much of a League player, but as I understand it you spend a big chunk of the game just standing in a lane with another player fighting 2 enemy players.

It's a fine line. Make your game too aggressive and you end up with a ToD simulator like 2XKO or anime fighters with 100-hit combos. Make your game too slow or "deliberate" and you end up with a game like Smash Ultimate, where scrubs will circle camp you with projectiles on the game's pretend-competitive online mode for 6 minutes per game. Post-nerf SF4 Sagat is actually fun to fight though. I played Makoto VS Sagat in USF4 recently and it's a really interesting matchup. Playing Ultra Combo Double, Sagat has to be a bit careful with his fireballs lest he give Makoto free meter for Ultra 2. But once he has meter, Makoto can't just Focus Attack because of EX Fireball. So Sagat can't just play defensively, so you have a back and forth between a slow footsie game when Sagat is trying to keep Makoto away, and rushdown mixups if Makoto finally gets in. USF4 has it's issues, IMO the top tiers play the least interesting game of SF4, but there's some genuinely cool interplay between a lot of the cast.

The impressive thing about this game is that there is a ton to criticze about the game, the game is pure ass, but somehow everything that surrounds it is worse, so most threads you won't see people argue about the gameplay, the mechanics or whatever, they'll just argue about the things that surround it.
Most recently the talking point has been about this game trying to force his way into the FGC through money.
There is legitimately so, so much wrong with this game. It's easier to list the things it does right... which I can't think of any. Not even netcode, as it is rendered almost useless because the game is region locked.

It's most likely riot paying people to register and adding fake registrations on top to inflate the numbers so they can seem popular and hope that this will attract people to play what's popular.
There's no way you have more registrants than viewers, especially not in a fighting game, they couldn't have made it more obvious.
Riot has always been shameless, they inflated their valorant viewer numbers on twitch when it released by forcing you to watch streamers to get an invite, that way the game was at the top of the view charts, not because people were interested in watching, but because they were forced to be able to play.
I have been looking forward to the downfall of this shit company for many years, and it looks like it's going to come soon.
