How did releasing unfinished games, having the players pay to beta test them, and then maybe finishing them half a decade later get normalized?
Fools and their money.
Digital distribution.
>>732281135They found out people are willing to pay for a game that might get finished.Same thing happened with giving people early access to a game a few days before release for extra money.Doesnt help that content creators are absolute consoomers
>>732281135AAAs and indies are two sides of the same coin. Indies are just more shameless.
Most games are early access, with or without the label. At least those willing to call their game EA are being honest about it not being done.Buying on release has been a historic failure in the age of digital distribution.
Funny how steamies never mention Early access when talking about how good steam is, even though it is VALVE who popularized and normalized this as a concept.
>>732281135The game ends up better from active ongoing feedback and the developer has more money ahead of time to help make the game better.
>>732281836usually it just goes worse when bunch of retards can give feedback to something
>>732281135Easier to sell the idea of a good game then to actually make a good game.
>>732281886Maybe games with competitive scenes that hate fun, but early access has been a net boon overall, especially when it also comes to bugs (games are more complex on average so it's harder to properly bug test) and shit people actually want.
>read article about upcoming pc game>looks awesome>get to end>"Early Access launching next month" >lose interest immediately>forget about it Am I the only one? I have 24 hours in a day and there are 6,000,000 games to play and I'm not going to bother with a pre-alpha. I will revisit when it is done.
>>732281135>How did releasing unfinished games, having the players pay to beta test them, and then maybe finishing them half a decade later get normalized?Emphasis on word "maybe":https://store.steampowered.com/app/236370/Interstellar_Marines/
>>732281135It worked for the forest games.
>>732281135This shit is why I released my incomplete prototype for free. If I'm selling something, I'm going to make sure it's complete just to make a point with these idiot Twittard """gamedevs""".
>>732281975>especially when it also comes to bugs (games are more complex on average so it's harder to properly bug test) and shit people actually want. This is a load of bullshit by the way. Developers push out buggy pieces of shit because they know people will buy it anyway. "Push it out and fix it later and even if you don't fix it, we got their money anyway."
>>732281135>half a decadetry 15 years
>>732282237Why does Steam let games like these stay in the store? EA games should be removed if there hasn't been an update in a year
>>732282964They started labeling games that are in early access that haven't been updated to inform customers that theyre buying abandonware.
>>732282864Fuck no, games that were pushed out without a whole lot of bugs were because they had way bigger studios behind them and they were usually simpler. Indie projects involve way less people in the development and 3D stuff is especially bug-prone. Even Super Mario 64 has a metric ton of bugs and oddities that were found out by autistic fans over the years
