Because the implication with game over is that you ought to turn the game off and do something else, maybe even play a *different* game instead. That's how it used to work, you played until you reached a final failure/success state, receive the game over screen and be content with your time spent. Now it doesn't work that way. You died implies you made a mistake, but we won't punish so much as set you back and expect you to eventually overcome the obstacle. It's worded more harshly because saying just respawn or start over is too "videogamey" and we can't have that.
