Right looks so much better here. Both Strong Bad and HWG look much closer to their source material. Strong Bad is flatter, more vibrant and looks straight out of a flash animation. HWG appears to have much cleaner and sharper cell shading. Tycho looks a bit off however as it seems they added depth to him. The flatter version on the left looks more appropriate. Max looks mostly the same, but 3 out of 4 ain't bad.

Poker Night actually solved it well by having actual characters with personalities, interactions, various banter and their own "playstyles"
One thing this remaster promises is to polish the game up to the characters play better and more in accordance with their personalities which I'm curious about

So is this remaster a separate purchase to the original game? Or is the upgrade free? The upgrades seem nice but dunno if they're worth-spending-on nice.

>>732288492
Realistically it'll be a separate purchase since it's been so long.

The original game was delisted because of legal troubles when Telltale exploded, so I don't think it's possible to do an upgrade like that. It's technically a different studio than Telltale.
That said, if it's anything like the Sam and Max remasters, it won't be more than 19.99 and it'll have the original game as DLC so the only real question is if you think this is worth 20 bucks. The other alternative is buying OG game keys from key sites or trader fags or just pirating it

Aside from trying to form sets of cards that are better, the real meat of poker is lying about the strength of your hand by bluffing. As much as people say its a card game, its really a lying game that uses cards.
Its hard to actually play poker digitally because it all boils down to numbers and probabilities without a way to actually look for tells in your opponent's bluffing strategy.

What are you talking about? Strong Bad's shading looks much, much better, and even though Tycho doesn't look like he did in the Penny Arcade comics of the time, he never did, and he certainly doesn't look worse than he did in the original release. His model and shading were definitely the shittiest of the four characters, so this is a step up.

>>732285934
They're probably remastering Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People next, and testing the waters so they can remaster Poker Night 2 Both of those have been in high demand ever since the original Telltale went under.

I'm hoping Skunkape end up making at least one more Homestar game. Strong Bad looks too good for it to just be done with a rerelease of SCG4AP.

Poker Night at the Inventory now plays a far more accurate game of poker, and your opponents will make more informed decisions that better fit their play style and personality.
Is the game going to be harder?

In Texas hold 'em you start the round by being given two personal cards that no one else should see.
Over the course of various rounds of betting your goal is to either be the only player who hasn't 'folded' (quit the round) or have the highest valued cards of any remaining player.

You can look up online the particular list of poker hands you can make and what is better than what.
But the gist is that there are pairs and 3s/4s of a kind, 'flushes' (having 5 cards of the same suite) and straights (having 5 cards numerically in order, think 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - or 10, jack, queen, king, ace)

After the first round of betting the 'flop' is revealed.
There are 5 communal cards everyone shares in the center of the table.
After these first 3 are revealed there is another round of betting.
Followed by one more card being revealed. This repeats until all five cards have been revealed and one last betting round has been performed.

You must match the bets of other players.
You can either match (call) quit (fold) or bet more (raise)
If no player has bet anything during a round of betting you may 'check' which just means you also don't bet.

The only things they can't keep are the direct references to the original Telltale. Which all come from Strong Bad. Matt Chapman recorded at least one new line for the new trailer, so we can safely assume that wasn't all they brought him in for.
And knowing The Brothers Chaps, they were definitely active participants in the process of updating Strong Bad's model.

On the other hand, Gary Schwartz may not have come back in to record new lines for the Heavy. Any time he does the voice these days, there's a wheezy quality to it that doesn't seem like it's present here. I'm sure he'd be extremely happy to do it, so I'm not sure exactly what's going on there.

Max's voice is still clearly William Kasten, and they also had him record new lines for the trailer.

The only one I have absolutely nothing definitive to say about is Andrew Chaikin, Tycho's voice actor. He's still around. I don't know if he'd reprise the role, if they'd want him to, or if there's some other reason he can't. There's a chance some of his lines could be cut, if Jerry Holkins doesn't care for them anymore, for whatever reason, all we know is that they haven't replaced Chaikin entirely.

The real question is whether or not the Monkey Island stuff stays in. There's a good chance it will. The IP has been owned by Devolver for about four years now, but there's absolutely no sign of Reginald Van Winslow or any other Tales of Monkey Island related stuff in the trailer. Which is weird. He's the host and the dealer. You'd think he'd be a little more prominent.

Evil Dead had a new movie in 2013, had various comic book miniseries and graphic novels for the past decade, and was already one of the all-time classic action-horror film franchises.
That's a lot more relevant than Brock, who was a side character in an obscure Adult Swim show.
>>
>>732296493
valve finished the comic and handed the community mod tools. i do not think that feeding them with hope for more official valve content is a good idea. even WITH mod tools I still occasionally run into a weird autist who bitterly talks about how TF2 could still be big if valve supported it instead of their Dumb Objectively Bad Mobas and the Heavy Update would instantly have people clamoring for more when they have multiple other game projects they're working on as we speak

Frankly 2 had a really weak cast.
Poker Night 1 made more sense, because the characters were all from franchises Tell Tale had worked with. Either literally making a game for, or just closely associated with.
They all fit the theme of this particular gamer/internet nerd subculture.
Bringing in the protagonist from an old horror film franchise, a dude from a random Adult Swim cartoon, and Claptrap, not great.

They also just don't have as good banter.
Strongbad and Tycho being rivals due to being in similar genres in real life was great. The dynamic between these somewhat normal people and the insanity of Max and the crazy stories of the Heavy were great.
It didn't work with 2's cast nearly as well

>>732296869
It sounds more like Kasten's performance to me. I could totally be wrong. They're extremely close. Maybe they pulled old lines off the cutting room floor, maybe it really is just David Boat.

>>732297049
The Monkey Island IP was acquired by Devolver Digital before 2022, so Ron Gilbert could come back and make the hideous disappointment that was Return to Monkey Island. Disney didn't want it and (rightfully) saw zero value in making more games in the series.

I guess? But color grading has always been a lazy way to artificially achieve what should be done with textures and models first.
The Inventory's still a small, dimly lit, almost empty place that clearly had its best days behind it. That vibe still comes across perfectly well. The yellow grading was just there to reinforce the idea that the building was old. (And desaturated, yellow color grading was the industry's favorite thing back then. Just like shitty particle effects and way too much post-processing are its favorites now.) I'll be happy if it doesn't have either.

The actual "original" lugermorph was from a Max & Sam game, which became vintage after Night at the Invetory dropped it again as an unique non tradable item. You would need to have the S&M vintage one to see anything of value. Even if Valve gave a single fuck about that little detail of upgrading quality by turning current vintage into stranges and uniques into vintage, it would mean jack shit because now there would be gorillions of vintage ones, and the stranges ones would still be minimal.

I wouldn't be opposed to Bubsy, Homestar, Charlie Dompler and Coach, they fit well into the player archetypes they used for the other Poker Night games.

Bubsy's the overly cautious one who's a pain to get the achievement item for.

Homestar's a total wild card. He plays every game differently, almost always making stupid decisions. Almost always the first to lose, but in one in five games he'll have the smartest AI of the four.

Charlie's competent, but thinks he's way better than he really is. If bluffing is a reasonable option, he'll almost always do it.

Coach is the casual. He's not terribly concerned about winning or losing, but he gets more aggressive when the public cards are more likely to produce better hands, whether he has something good or not.

The Dealer is the new Announcer from Project TF, whatever the fuck that's going to be like.

The Poker Night items aren't tradable, they're achievement items. The Vintage grade Lugermorphs are tradable because they were a promotional item from before the Genuine grade was introduced. Making them Vintage was the only way that existed at the time of distinguishing the two variants. Otherwise you'd have people wondering why some Lugermorphs are tradable and others aren't.

Nathan Vetterlein is on Valve's bad side for some reason. He's basically vanished from the internet and doesn't participate in TF2 related stuff even though he's much less busy than Robin Atkin Downes and not nearly as old as the rest. There has to be some weird reason for that.

It doesn't seem like he tried very hard to get more voice acting roles on the back of his success with TF2. The only non-Valve projects he's credited on are a background role in a game called SiN Episodes, an obscure coming-of-age movie called The Standard, and a minor role in another short film. Since then, it's been basically nothing.

Everyone else on the TF2 cast was extremely well established in the industry, or an adjacent one, even if they weren't all very big names. Nathan could've absolutely tried a little harder to use his one high profile credit to get more work.

But instead, he kept doing whatever he was doing, and eventually tried to leverage it into becoming a streamer, without properly understanding the skills and resources he'd need to make it feasible.

Strong Bad and Max were from Telltale games that had already released. Telltale wanted to make a Penny Arcade game at the time, and were a regular fixture at PAX even before it got big. But Bald and Pig-like decided to go with a different company and we ended up with Rainslick Precipice of Darkness instead of the Point and Click adventure game Telltale would have made.

And The Heavy's there because Valve were really big on cross-promotion in TF2 at the time and Telltale were good partners who got in on the ground floor with it.

whats the easiest way to unlock the tf2 items in this game?
>>
>>732308645
They didn't get their start that way. Their intention was always to make Point and Click Adventure games. Telltale Texas Hold 'Em was just a convenient, relatively low effort way to show off the strengths of their proprietary system to potential partners. It wasn't meant to be a commercial product, but they released it anyway because it was fun.

Then, they made the first Poker Night just because they thought it would be fun to slap a bunch of the IPs they had the rights to into an anniversary project and to show how far they'd come. Poker Night 2 wasn't like that.
It was an intentional sequel because the first one was so popular. They mostly intended for it to advertise Tales from The Borderlands and their ill-fated Evil Dead game.
Then they ended up getting way too big for their britches after The Walking Dead and killed the company by pumping out too many games in the same format long after it got stale.
>>
>>732310468

The actual poker mechanics in Poker Night 1 were hilariously fucked up and broken. No one was playing it because they wanted a good virtual poker game. They were playing it because they wanted to see Strong Bad talking to The Heavy from TF2, or they just wanted the "free" TF2 items, and they never touched it again once they got the achievements.

It's extremely funny to me that TF2 has stayed popular and relevant all the way from the last days of the VCR to the last days of physical media in general. You could have recorded TF2 gameplay straight from your Xbox 360 or PS3 onto a video cassette with no adapters or modifications, and people are still playing it en mass. Not a source port, not a sequel. Not as a retro classic. The same game that they just kept adding more and more to. Then, they kept playing the game long after they stopped that.

That's like if there was a massive community of people sitting down to play Zork Zero every single day back when TF2 was released.

TF2 will hit its 20th anniversary on October 10th 2027.

TF2 has been out for over twice as long as it took to develop, the infamous Nine Years In Development.

TF2 has existed as a concept for nearly 30 years. Most of the people on this website are younger than that.

There can never be anything like TF2 again, and there never should be.
TF2 is, very quietly, very graciously, a juggernaut that goes above and beyond all the long-term franchises in the industry. Because it did all of that with ONE GAME. No sequels. No remakes, no spinoffs. Just Team Fortress 2.

Overwatch came, went, released a sequel, died again, then admitted that the sequel was a bad idea in hindsight. Battleborn, Paladins and every other imitator turned up and died in even shorter order.

New efforts to dethrone TF2 continue to crop up. And they all fall apart before they even achieve a quarter of the lifespan TF2 has had. The only near-worthy competitor managed to survive, not even thrive, because it was marketed by pornographic parody.

TF2 endured through the closest thing to abandonment you can get. And that survival against all odds has given it a new life entirely.

Only now, almost 20 years on, is there a sequel to TF2 in development. And not for a moment did the "franchise" go dormant.
>>

>Only now, almost 20 years on, is there a sequel to TF2 in development.

There's a project labeled "TF" in the Source 2 files. It appeared shortly after Valve hired a bunch of TF2 community members. It's probably Team Fortress 3. It's probably a long way away, though.

Here's a thought.
What if they have more than 4 characters in a story mode tournament setting where you go through various tables and rise up the ranks, with the actual roster being somewhere around 30 characters counting the dealers?
You could start off with a table of completely clueless players like Homestar Runner or Scout or what have you, then work up the ranks until you're at a table with people like Spy, G-Man, Emet Selch, etc.
Maybe even get console exclusive characters for certain tables in the Switch and PS versions to compensate for the inability to get TF2 loot.
>>
>>732319881
No, because to warrant that increase in production, they'd have to raise the price. End of the day it's still just a generic poker game with some memorable characters, I doubt most people would want to pay more than $10-20 for it.

Charlie's too chill for the Inventory, I don't think any of the Smiling Friends cast would be good picks because I just don't see them being able to banter or play off the rest of a hypothetical cast very well. Carl works because he can play both straight man and the foil.
>>
>>732320962
no charlie's pretty much perfect. he can be a straight man but he's also capable of thinking really deluded shit, little tiny bit like strong bad.

Carl from ATHF
Captain Hero from Drawn Together
Scout or Demoman
Kiryu from Yakuza, speaking JP but everyone misunderstands him and he understands English because it's funnier that way

Charlie could stand on his own. I don't think Carl would be the same way. He's a one note scumbag whose comedy comes from his proximity to the Aqua Teens, for the most part. He kind of deserves what he gets, but not nearly in the measure he gets it. And it's usually in the form of violence, or some other violation of his autonomy or wellbeing.
If you don't have that, he's just some fat, slovenly asshole relating everything to an anecdote.

Sure, you could have him talk about the time Shake bought a hypnotism kit off of an infomercial at 3AM that lead to a bunch of raccoons pulling Carl apart like a cooked chicken. But that's something you'd rather see than hear about.

Carl's also notoriously laconic when he's not having fun, or his ego is bruised. If one of the other characters were to say something that he didn't like, he'd call them a jackass and shut up for the rest of the game, if not leave the table entirely.

Charlie can at least have a conversation with the other characters. He's inherently curious and opinionated in a way that Carl just isn't.

Whenever Carl asks a question in ATHF, it's almost always rhetorical, usually designed to make the other party uncomfortable in the hopes they'll leave him the fuck alone. He asks the horror of the week what his deal is, gets an answer that's clearly absurd, then he just glares and leaves the scene. Only to be killed or maimed a few minutes later.

Carl is absolutely a very funny character, but what he's good at isn't really compatible with the Poker Night format, which is probably why they went with Brock Sampson over him for Poker Night 2.

Neat. They stopped fucking around after Sam & Max S1: the S2 and S3 remasters were straight upgrades. Hoping they do the Strong Bad game next. Kinda wish they could spruce up Wallace & Grommit, but the other Telltale seems to still have the rights for that one.

Not with that terrible fucking Bosco voice they replaced the original actor with.
>>

Telltale was good when Sam & Max Save the World came out, and the point of no return was Walking Dead Season 2 (although Tales From the Borderlands was surprisingly fantastic)

>>
>>732323067
They made one inexplicable change to a character you talk once for only a couple minutes in most of the episodes. The only time it's a significant disruption is in the one episode where he and his mom's ghost are the main focus.

I'm just as baffled as you are that they didn't at least try to match the character of his original voice, but that one choice shouldn't ruin your whole experience of what is otherwise a very good remaster.

>>732323020
Telltale weren't great before Sam and Max Save the World, and pretty spotty between Save The World and The Devil's Playhouse. Then they stayed pretty consistent until Tales From the Borderlands even though The Walking Dead changed the format of their games. After that, they went downhill fast.

Basically, don't bother with the Bone games, or the CSI or Law and Order games.

Other than that, Everything between Beyond Time and Space and The Devil's Playhouse is worth playing if you like the IP they've licensed.

Puzzle Agent and Puzzle Agent 2 aren't their typical fare, they're more like Professor Layton, but, both are good games.
Play the remaster of Poker Night 1 instead of the original, and avoid Jurassic Park.

The Walking Dead is great, The Walking Dead: Season Two was a good follow up, The Wolf Amogus was also good, and Tales From The Borderlands is probably the best the Borderlands franchise ever got.
After that, it goes downhill pretty fast. Batman was the best of that period, but your mileage may vary on it.
They could have righted the ship after Batman, but they refused to believe their games would ever stop trending, so they made a lot of bad decisions, hemorrhaged all their competent writers and overstretched the rest of their resources by taking on too many licensed projects at once.

It's hard to get excited for remasters when I know there's gonna be some censorship bullshit that comes along with it.

2 Ref was originally considered a high price for a Stout Shako. That was the joke. Some poor dipshit massively overvaluing the shitty hat they uncrated because they wanted to recoup a larger fraction of what they spent to take another pull on the slot machine. But now, it's considered a reasonable price because inflation devalued metal and the supply constrained cosmetics that used to be used as stores of value have been mostly invalidated by just buying and selling things for real money through third party platforms.

>>732327147
What exactly do you think is going to be censored? You must be expecting something in particular to be at risk, right? I wouldn't say anything in Poker Night 1 would be a candidate for being altered or cut.

I know Penny Arcade was still relatively edgy at the time, but that wasn't represented at full capacity in Tycho's lines at all. They were keeping it relatively reserved.

Max won't get censored. Nothing he says is even remotely in bad taste.

Strong Bad won't get censored because Homestar Runner has always been about more or less clean comedy.

And The Heavy doesn't carry over any of the casual discriminatory comments that the TF2 characters lob at each other. He basically never participates in it himself in TF2, let alone in Poker Night.
