It could be the way we go on and on, and tend to make our points in terms of statistics, results and conclusions. “Every second we lose an area of rainforest the size of two football fields.” “We have only 70 months to avoid catastrophic climate change.” On Twitter, NGOs have raised the delivery of bad news to a new level of concision. The trouble is, these tidbits of information close the subject down and don't allow the other person's mind anywhere to go. Whereas the imagination—as any dramatist knows—is drawn more towards movement and hints. We are almost involuntarily attracted to the half-hidden, the shadowy and incomplete. What we need to do is abandon the “information deficit” model. That's the one that goes: I know something, you don't know it, once you know what I know you will grasp the seriousness of the situation and change your behavior accordingly. Greens should dump that model in favor of suggesting details that actually catch people's interest and allow the other person to get involved.
>>732299842I'd rather have LA Noire, but with the cross-examination sections from from Ace Attorney Investigations. LA Noire sort of already did the AA "present evidence to contradict statements" thing, but go full Ace Attorney with the "this is the only way the murder could have occurred" thing, and less reliance on facial cues and poker tells.
In “CRIME AND PUNISHMENT” Raskolnikov, the murderer and anti-hero, is tormented by a detective. Porfiry Petrovich seems to know Raskolnikov is guilty from the start and keeps reappearing in the hope of provoking a confession. Richard Levinson and William Link, two American screenwriters, had studied Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s great novel at university and drew on the figure of Porfiry when creating an investigator of their own.The lasting success of the character of Columbo and the television series of that name owed much to Peter Falk (pictured), the actor who played the main part. Although others had taken brief turns in the role, Falk, with his shabby raincoat and cigar, became a TV great with his portrayal. (He won four Emmys and a Golden Globe for his efforts.) The show attracted other rising stars, too. An early episode was directed by a promising young auteur named Steven Spielberg, with a script by Steven Bochco—who later developed “Hill Street Blues”, “LA Law” and “NYPD Blue”.“Columbo” was a hit in spite of its unusual format: in nearly all the episodes, the identity of the murderer is known from the start. The viewer sees an apparently perfect crime being committed. Columbo appears after 15 or 20 minutes, and thereafter the mystery lies in how he will catch the killer. The detective initially seems absent-minded or bumbling—an apparent guilelessness that leads the villain to under estimate him. But before long he spots a small inconsistency, then another and another. He worries away at the crime like a terrier shaking a rat.The series is set around Los Angeles and the murderer is often a celebrity of some kind. Columbo exploits the baddies’ fame to undermine their defences, sometimes by claiming his wife is one of their biggest fans. But the suspects quickly become exasperated by the detective’s persistence, as Columbo repeatedly turns up to inquire about “just one more thing”.
>>732305221The culprit may attempt to evade Columbo’s suspicions by taking further action to cover up the original crime, such as killing a witness or trying to incriminate someone else. This second offence usually proves their downfall. The finale frequently involves Columbo playing a trick on the murderer that forces them to confess or reveal their guilt. Sometimes the viewer may wonder whether Columbo’s tactics—and some of the vital evidence—would actually stand up in court. But such concerns are quickly forgotten: this is comfort-food storytelling rather than gritty realism. The episodes released in the 1970s are by far the best and feature a variety of guest murderers including Dick Van Dyke, Leonard Nimoy, Janet Leigh and Johnny Cash. When the series was revived in 1989, the episodes were longer, more meandering and relied heavily on Falk’s charm. Today the original show offers a welcome dose of familiarity to veteran viewers and reassurance all round, like the comedies of P.G. Wodehouse or the mysteries of Agatha Christie. No matter how ingenious or powerful the villains might be, it insists, a little scruffy guy like Columbo will always be there to catch them out.

If you are an adult, watch "Any Old Port In A Storm"
>>732305534Are you implying I haven't seen every Columbo episode 5 times?
I'm going to share my all time favorite trivia fact. In the 1970s, the country of Romania went absolutely fucking apeshit for Columbo, to the point where Peter Falk/Columbo was a bigger, more recognizable celebrity than Elvis. At that time, Romania was behind the iron curtain during that time, and they had limits on how much American and other foreign media would be broadcast on their state-owned airwaves. Also, Columbo had a highly irregular production schedule, especially compared to how meticulously timed American television is. Seasons would be different lengths, sometimes the show would take a year or two off, etc. So in 1974, Romania had run out of new episodes to watch, because there were no more, but the people were convinced that the government was holding out because of import quotas, and they almost revolted. There were demonstrations and protests, and the Romanian government had to contact the US Government, and the US State Department had to fly out Peter Falk to Washington DC to deliver a live televised speech to the Romanian citizens, written phonetically for Falk in Romanian, thanking them for being fans, and assuring them that there were no more episodes, they had seen them all, but there were more on the way. Peter Falk had talked about this incident on both Johnny Carson and David Letterman's late night shows, but I can't find the clips. But what there is the English translation of the speech he gave:https://wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/1974BUCHAR01611_b.html
>>732305534There's a few episodes about wine. Was that the one about the vintner and the wine that spoiled in the LA summer heat, the one that ends with "I wish you had been a chef, detective," or the one that ends with "This far, sir, and no further."?

Columbo was such a weird show. I remember an episode where someone (call them Person A) tried to kill a man but said man was already dead when Persona A got to him, because someone else (Person B) had already murdered the victim a couple hours before, but Person A didn't know that so they shot a corpse; then, at the end of the episode when it's revealed that it was actually Person B who killed the victim, Persona A asked Columbo if they were going to go to prison now and Columbo answered with something like "Nah it's not a crime to shoot a dead body". Who the fuck wrote this shit?
>>732288245Probably not. He'd probably die in the Mercenary Tribunal before he could find the Deserter.
>>732307735I remember that one. If I remember correctly, Person A and Person B turned out to be the same person. He'd killed the victim, then "killed" her again a few hours later so that he could confess to the crime of shooting a corpse and throw off suspiscion for shooting a living person. Not one of the best episodes, the whole thing felt like a soap opera.

Keep them as long as you like and bring them back once you are finished with them. It's fine, take however much time you need
