Outer Worlds 1 received more praise and sold more copies than it deserved. People were so angry about Fallout 76, they rallied around a mid game just stick it to Bethesda.
Btw, only the first planet of OW1 was good because it was written by the original writer before he left. That's why that companion Parvati went from being depressed about her father to all of a sudden quirky asexual lesbian due to the new writer being an asexual lesbian.I know fuck all of the second game but I could only imagine how bad it must be.Did the DLC even make the first game better or no?

>>732292653I would be happy if Obsidian made something other than slop, but that feels like a distant dream.
>>732293141This picture is the closest thing to discourse I've seen about this game. No one wanted it and no one even cares enough to look into it far enough to find anything else to complain about. It seemed so obvious to me that would be the case, yet somehow they spent 6 years developing it without coming to that same conclusion in spite of every signpost along the way.
>>732292653No. I like a lot of Obsidion's output, and I was a huge fan of the Interplay/Troika Games projects back in the day. I even liked Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny, despite their flaws. The writing in those games always keeps me in despite the mediocre combat in Arcanum/Vampire the Masquerade or the low enemy variety in stuff like Tyranny. And stuff like Pentiment had such a unique style, it makes going into a painfully generic setting like the Outer Worlds all the worse. In a lot of ways, it's the best an Obsidion game has ever played. The gunplay is fun enough and exploring is usually rewarding. The problem is that the writing is shockingly, horrifically childish. Every character is written as some kind of cardboard cutout of a real character filtered through 30 seasons of sitcom flanderization. Companions are okay but if you were hoping for a compelling villain like the Master or even just something darkly funny like Myron the 16 year old drug scientist/sexual deviant then forget it. The overall themes are so unsubtle and totally not compelling. Every corporate boss is simultaneously a Machiavellian demigod capable of controlling an entire star system but also too stupid to tie their own shoelaces. I've read outright Communist propaganda that gives more compelling critiques of the concept of the Joint Stock Corporation than this game. And that just makes me sad. I know the main writer from Fallout New Vegas wasn't with Obsidion for this but Leonard Boyarsky made Fallout, Arcanum/VtM:B, and Tyranny. And I just can't believe this is the same guy that wrote such an eloquent treaty on the nature of power and legalism for Kyros. Most Obsidion villains are so compelling even if they're omnicidal fanatics that meeting the big bad in The Outer Worlds nearly broke my heart. Their entire plan amounts to sticking their fingers in their ears as everyone dies because they're just such dumb all powerful jerks like that.
>>732292653People seem to be shitting on the game but I can't even do that since I just saw the $70 price and ignored it.
>>732292653not until they get bought by the chinese
>>732293141>>732296161Ngl its kinda funny and pathetic how they went "NO YOU CANT ROMANCE THEM!!!" in the trailer. >>732293145They made the companions, somehow, even worse. They also seemed to take steps to stop speedrunners which backfires as it only gets on the nerves of regular players.
>>732292653I don't care at all
>>732292916In what way was it propaganda apart from the very on the nose message that corporations are le bad! I only played 10 hours of the first game and dropped it btw
>No you can't romance themI wasn't planning to lol. And I'm the kind of sperg who likes look outside mutants.>>732293141On paper these should be pretty different, there are noble robed characters and space marine characters along with a clear range of different planets worth of recruits... yet they all somehow feel same-y in their shape and silhouette. Unsure why as Ass Effect also had everyone as the same general model but they managed to use colors and such to differentiate even different krogan from each other.
Rumors are already circulating. Obsidian will be given the Fallout IP to manage seeing as how Obsidian is unable to create new IPs. Microsoft is basing this decision off Bethesda's busy schedule (TES6, Starfield 2 in the pipeline) and Obsidians track record for going fantastic with existing IPs, but terrible with their own new IPs.
>>732296434And how did that work out for you?

>>732298086Since we are talking about 2, it is basically pure emotional appeal and group think manipulation tactics targeting (you) the player starting right from the beginning. 1 is unironically better then this because it largely cleaves to the fairly vanilla but reliable strawman techniques for visual mediums.

As a certified chud, I genuinely do not care about this game. It never appealed to me to begin with. I was a tiny bit more invested in Avowed's failure, seeing as how they had a guy talking about how he was going to do everything in his power to remove and prevent white men from getting jobs in his industry, but this game is just outright uninteresting. The worst I can say for it is that it criticizes free markets, but it does it in such a lampoon/disingenuous manner that its not even worth addressing.

>>732292653>GOOD SHOW, JOLLY GOOD SHOW
>>732299618I was thinking the same thing
>>732292653Yes? Obsidian was never built to last, they never learned their lesson. Their very first game, KOTOR2, was already a rushed mess and things only really got worse. They always overscoped, they always had several projects going on at the same time competing for time and resources. During New Vegas' development, they were making Alpha Protocol and Dungeon Siege III at the same time, and all three came out undercooked.Really, this was a long time coming. Quite literally, the more interviews you look up, the clearer it is that the only reason NV triumphed was because of Chris Avellone. He ran Van Buren PnPs that led directly to many of NV's elements, he was in charge of most of the character writing and DLC directing, with the best DLC being the one he was the most in charge of (Dead Money) and the worst one, the one he was the least involved with. In fact, for the latter he has a story where he had scheduled elements to be put into the game by other devs but a day before the deadline he decided to check things out and realized the things had "fallen through the cracks". Among them? The whole dialogue tree where Graham talks about Caesar and refers to couriers as spies. I repeat: had Avellone not paid attention, that shit wouldn't have been in the game.Obsidian was always the same, always flying by the seat of its pants, so it makes all the sense in the world that the second they lost Avellone, not even Sawyer could save the company culture from games like Outer Worlds or Avowed. The company's fall was a long time coming.

They aren't making TOW3 because they're refocusing on making DLC for Outer Worlds 2 because it was still a success despite not reaching MICROSOFT'S (Not Obsidian's!) sales expectations. They're not making Outer Worlds 3 right now because they're focusing on Pillars of Eternity again, TOW3 is definitely still going to happen someday in the interview. /v/ just has neanderthals who fall for misleading OPs and articles, and lies, again and again and again... In June 2025, it was announced that Avellone had joined the inaugural project of Republic Games, a new studio founded by video game writer Adam Williams.[287][288] The unnamed project is a dystopian fantasy game described as "A tyrannical regime is brutally enforcing its ideology and crushing all dissent. But a faction of rebels seeks to overturn the tyrants and expose the lies at the heart of their doctrine."[289] Avellone has also been brought on by Red Info, a studio founded by Robert Kurvitz and Aleksander Rostov, former leads at ZA/UM for Disco Elysium, to help with developing the story for their planned spiritual sequel to Disco Elysium.[290I guess there is something to look forward to.
