I've done a lot of research into RuneScape 3. The game looks very interesting to be honest, but the issue is that the core game was seemingly neglected in favor of MTX slop for OVER 13 YEARS. In my opinion it may not actually be worth it unless they do fresh servers? Would they ever do that? The game has so much potential but if they don't do something drastic like that I don't even know if I should bother?

It is the zombie corpse of a soulful game. The old good parts are still there and not all of the new stuff is bad, but the structure of the game itself is totally rotten. I don't see anyone enjoying it now unless they fell in love with it back when it was good.
>>
Honestly, A single player RPG based on runescape will probably be really good casually.
>>
Is it over for me? The only game I'm interested in playing is RuneScape. There's literally nothing I want to play but RS. I boot up other games and literally say to myself, "Well, it's not RuneScape so why even bother?"

It's over isn't it?
>>

Today's newspost about rolling back powercreep and AFK gives me hope that RuneScape is finally in the hands if those who understand uts strengths, and wish it prospers. Instead thinking of it as just a way to milk the whales.

yeah but unless they do fresh start worlds i don't think any of this matters

maybe keep like 5 "legacy" worlds max so people can keep their accounts but the game needs fresh blood.

I went back to RS3 once and every new update felt like this

That's honestly the perfect description. It's like they stitched new limbs onto a decaying body and called it innovation. The soul's long gone, but they keep parading it around Weekend XP boosts and Treasure Hunter promos like it means something. All they had to do was stick to solid quest design and organic skilling progression, but noooo, gotta chase whales with rainbow lootboxes.

The game was already beyond help 10 years ago but I'm curious to see what they're going to try
>>
highscores are a meme and they are still actually making content for it, i'm personally waiting until the combat rework update where they are unfucking all the abilities and bringing it in line with the much more modern combat system/style (necromancy) and updating them all to go to level 120

they already are in the middle of removing all of the mtx items, they already have a global cosmetic toggle, they're updating all of the graphics to be consistent with each other, all that remains is for them to unfuck the combat visuals and mechanics (they're working on it) and then you have what is actually probably a really good (if not a little bit grindy) RPG game with 20+ years of content
>>
buying an m4 mac mini to run osrs bots on.

ill make back the money in a month. ez clap.
>>
>>732303069
truly it has never been a better time to bot in osrs

jagex does not give a FUCK about the game health, and they are literally constantly adding new bot content to be abused while placating the playerbase with dogshit worthless changes like the wildy diary update requirement for the singles+ bosses

i'm so disillusioned with the game i hope that the number of bots eclipses the number of real players and they have some sort of fucking crisis when they realize they are literally just hosting a fake game. maybe i should play a private server or something, at least they're transparent about the cash grab bullshit they're doing
>>
>>732299643
they ruled it out, if they even plan on doing it in the future it won't be permanent since they don't want to obviously punish the playerbase that kept playing the game
>>
>>732297346
it's not worth playing runescape 3 at all

If they're not willing to ban them, they should at least quarantine Venezuelans to their own regional servers. Would help with the both the bots and the gold farmers at the same time.

Supposedly this year they are focusing on improving the game in a lot of areas
Visually, combat, early/mid game skilling, and other areas too
They already did a ui update which besides the colour (which i dont like) was pretty good.
So have a look on what those updates entail and decide to play if any of them might fix a grievance you have with the game

>>732299989
They've been recycling token grind events for the past decade or so which is pretty much this exact video.
Hell, even the holiday events are like this nowadays. They can't just release a regular miniquest like OSRS, they want you to AFK grind at some holiday hub for hundreds of hours to inflate their engagement numbers...

There's never going to be fresh servers. All you have to do is start a new account. The roadmap Jagex put out looks very promising, and they're already taking steps to do so.
Reminder; The man in charge literally said no to a fully completed pride parade for Runescape in order to focus on fixing the various issues in the game.

While we're discussing Runescape I might as well ask a question. Not trying to start a war just want your honest opinions. I played old Runescape as a kid and I didn't mind the grind because every level felt significant. The world felt alive and the skills you improved felt important because you used them in questing and unlocking new parts of the game. That's basically why I tolerated the whole grind, because the world felt believable enough that it was worth achieving things in it.

I've been recently playing WoW Classic for the first time and I'm really struggling to get into it. I think the main reason is I just can't buy into the world at all. Every settlement is a bunch of vendors and people who have nothing to say to you, except 3 or 4 quest givers. I was shocked when I realised all the quests can be boiled down to like 4 types. I'm painfully aware that each zone is just a bunch of goons you are supposed to kill to level up so you can visit more zones. It doesn't feel like a world but some Truman show shit. I have that sensation like if I leaned on one of the houses it would fall over like it's a cardboard cutout.

Was Runescape also like this? Am I just nostalgiafagging? I haven't played RS in 15+ years but back then I swear the NPCs felt so much more like actual people even though WoW had actual voice acting.
>>
>>732309485
im botting osrs rn cause i dont hate myself enough to actually play it
>>
>>732297346
It genuinely does seem like they're trying to fix the game; most companies would not remove microtransactions from a game they didn't have faith in.
It's up to you whether you want to play it now and watch what they do, or wait and come into a hypothetical version (also leaving you open to play it if they they don't completely fix it). This is a personal question, not one other people can answer.
>>
>>732309547
slight rose tinted glasses but runegame certainly had more houses and farms etc
>>
>>732309646
they didnt actually remove microtransactions u can still buy bonus xp and skip half of the overall grind

RuneScape had the best quests out of the MMOs I've played. The engine and graphics have not aged well at all, but in terms of worldbuilding and quests with more depth than "kill 10 bears", it's pretty good

It's less that way than WoW for sure. There are a lot more people who have something to say, even if they have less to say when they do. Quests are also generally more varied, but a lot of those quests are just tedious and retarded bullshit (at least the early quests).
The problems with runescape's world are that it's just fundamentally pretty goofy and it does lack in conventional scale. One city will be right next door to the next with barely anything in between. But then, denser content does help the world feel realized in a different way.

Really just looking at the map illustrates this. You have the world carved up into really silly zones, the "kingdoms" are just random blobs with names that read like a joke you'd make up to mock bad fantasy, but there also just a lot of stuff everywhere and it's things that matter enough to be meaningfully interactable.
>>
>>732309669
I actually remember thinking Runescape's villages and "cities" were comically small, even as a kid (it was pretty common for RPGs back then). But the people who lived in them felt like residents rather than glorified vending machines. I dunno why. Being able to talk to people definitely helped.
>>
>>732309720
They wouldn't remove microtransactions at ALL if they weren't willing to try fix the game, they'd dial them up and milk the game till it dies off.
>>
>>732309965
I genuinely didn't realise how good we had it. I had friends who played WoW growing up and they'd always be like "dude, this game has hundreds of quests!", lol. Every quest in Runescape felt like a new adventure.

>>732310038
That's so true about the scale. I remember thinking "aw man time to make the long trip from Varrock to Falador" when they're basically next door. The game definitely felt bigger than it was.
>>
>>732309547
WoW is much less of an RPG than Runescape. The fun in WoW is from playing in a group and using your abilities, and most of your items are untradable drops/quest rewards and don't come from other players. I think both are good in their own way, but if you try to play one like the other it's gonna suck.
>>
It probably won't amount to much but it's still crazy for a modern developer to say "Most of what we did over the last 15 years sucked, we'll try to fix it"
>>
>>732308651
>they are so antithetical to the core rs gameplay
Agree, Runescape is the ultimate definition of "the journey not the destination". If you try and speedrun Runescape to 126/138/max whatever, so you can play the endgame raids, you will have a bad time. You had to enjoy every small achievement and bit of progress. WoW changed everything but I also think that as people's attention spans get shorter and shorter, MMOs were always going to follow the theme park format eventually.
>>
>>732310102
i actually deleted my runescape 3 character a while back because i love the game too much to play it in its current state

again, i could write you a 30 page essay on why the game simply isnt good enough and honestly? probably never will be.

i think one of the first genuinely major shifts away from what made the game feel like RuneScape AFTER EoC was Anachronia. and stuff like player owned farms. the game just doesn't feel like runescape anymore.

we have all these chores and shit and god do they just make the game miserable to play. hell this shit was starting with ports back in the day.

i just don't know who this game is for? retail wow players maybe? that game has just as much chores.
>>
>>732310598
>we have all these chores and shit and god do they just make the game miserable to play. hell this shit was starting with ports back in the day.
Yeah the dailyscape was definately getting out of control even before I quit RS3. It seems like OSRS has tried to go in the opposite direction with a focus on megarares from raids, for better or worse.
>>
>>732310514
>The fun in WoW is from playing in a group and using your abilities,
That's basically been my impression. Dungeons have been by far the best part of the game. Haven't got to raids yet but everyone says they're good too. I guess it's my own fault for not recognising what kind of game I was playing but if you look at the WoW community, the overwhelming sentiment is that retail is all about endgame content and vanilla was more about the journey. But I'm just sitting here playing Classic and thinking this game was always about the endgame.

They also removed / promised to remove the majority of dailies with their new direction. Like every thing they've said about their new direction is about "respecting players time and letting them play how they want". Obviously that's corpospeak but I think OSRS made it clear how rewarding it can be to consistently avoid playing into fomo.
>>
bump
>>
>>732310102
Honestly, they only started “removing” stuff like Treasure Hunter and lamps after the player count tanked hard and OSRS started flexing on them with consistent updates and a stable economy. They didn’t do it because they cared, they did it because they had to compete. Zero faith they stick with it once the heat dies down unless players keep holding their feet to the fire.
>>
>>732315887
its not really competition. its still jagex, its just they figure they can make more money from developing the game proper than what they're squeezing out of whales now that they're all max level
>>
>>732315887
osrs had been flexing on runescape for the greater part of like 10 years when they ran the poll to remove mtx back in like, 2020/2021 or whatever it was.

they know there's no money in the game right now, they're just in it to fix it, even the idea of a full recovery is laughable considering osrs popularity. i dont know exactly why they're doing it other than maybe to fix their branding, or maybe its just based mod north's pet project to make his childhood game good again

either way, its fun watching jagex just burn shovel money into a fire, maybe if they shovel enough money we'll get a real game out of it and runescape 3 will be good again
>>
>>732309258
Bot worlds would be awesome but they probably don't wanna encourage it because people would bring it onto normal worlds.
>>
>>732315887
When I say they care I mean that in the practical sense, where they have decided their route to making money from RS3 is to make it better. OSRS showed them that a healthier game environment is better long term and so they're incentivized to make RS3 healthy, as opposed to deciding that RS3 was just some dying MMO they should milk while they can.
>>
RS3 will be the better game for non zoomers

I'd give it half a year to a year. They're supposedly doing a lot of overhaul to make it not suck as much, but time will tell how it turns out. The changes so far aren't major, but they are nice.
>>
>>732327626
what's the point of botting if you don't play? at that point you might as well just play like, cookie clicker or something.
>>
They already did fresh start worlds, they weren't a success on OSRS, and while they were a success on RS3, they created a lot of asspain because you had to grind out 99/120 on them to get access to special variants of capes (Which they recently just gave out for the anniversary anyway) and they can't risk upsetting their whales with gameplay-acquired cosmetics.

If they ever do another fresh start world it would totally be worth coming back, RS3 really benefits from not having all that bullshit, and no matter what they say, it will always, forever, permanently be stained by the existence of treasure hunter, squeal of fortune, yak track, hero pass, etc, whatever they wanna call it, the p2w. It's there, and it will never go away. Even their plans to "remove existing p2w mtx items" extends out to some nebulous "late 2026" date. It'll never go away. and even if it DOES, it's too late, I already fullmaxed, and have a completionist cape. Anyone starting now is at an enormous disadvantage.
>>
>>732328768

>>
>>732328838
You're not, but anyone you'd be stuck having to deal with for group content will!
>>
>>732328863
But why would they treat it as a competition? Far as I'm aware, the only P2W stuff is related to XP rate boosts, and that's easy to just say 'New leaderboard, starting at this date'.
>>
>>732329227
pretty much. the p2w only affects whoever bought it, it has no bearing on you or anyone else. what did affect other people was the disgusting cosmetics but they've released an option to just turn that shit off. now you can't see peoples vomit
>>
>>732329227

or being able to instantly reset slayer tasks, or getting modifiers to your slayer helm to make bosses easier, or to have double, triple, QUADRUPLE reduced rates of decay on invention artifacts, all of the auras, all the costumes that give extra effects for skilling which can impact the speed at which you get supplies to a significant degree.
There's a lot.

you retards arguing about MTX clearly haven't ever played the game

the ACTUAL game destroying problem is the checklist of 20 dailies that you need to do every single day to be mostly "optimal" with your XP, theres multiple skills were its trained entirely by doing these dailies which is a massive cancer to the game
>>
>>732329505
Yeah. I've been playing a little bit every now and then, just so I can experience the quests, and I think getting rid of keys and hiding cosmetics are 2 things I think are great additions.
Aside from that, I'd also like to see
>Removal of the 3 daily skilling tasks and their weekly rewards
>Reintroduction of the fence post level 7 agility skip between Lumbridge and Varrock, as well as the Skipping stones at the Champions guild, remove the bridge
>Introduce rooftop agility courses from OSRS, lower leveling is really bad in agility
>Remove that gay quest about the dangers of melting Ice Mountain
I'd also like to see an Invention rework, but that's more because I'm a low level so I haven't gotten to use it yet. I think that the idea of an 'Elite skill' that you can't do until you hit level 80 in three skills is retarded.
>>732329769
Isn't a lot of that stuff consumed though? I agree it's bad that it's in the game, but it'll naturally disappear as people use it, returning it to a pre-introduction state. Aura's are also being removed.
>>732329843

you don't have to worry about it, I have actual confidence they'll remove it because Mod North is actually maxed himself in RS3 so he would have been forced to go through the same game destroying cancer.

The people you're responding to haven't played the game, anyone dissuaded by MTX of other people and not literal chores that take up 1-2 hours every single day is disingenuous and hasn't played the game in any capacity. Its literally like gacha dailies but 10x longer in terms of time
