Play Dragon Quest ~~2 HD2D. It's genuinely fantastic, extraordinarily well balanced, fun and BTFOs DQ 1 and 3 HD2D.~~ The glow up cannot be overstated. The only tradeoff is slightly more linearity but the world is still more open than 90% of other RPGs after you get the boat.

Oh, also the Dragon Quest 7 reremake comes out today or tomorrow or something

I did, took me 80 hours, and is a top 5 DQ for me.
I don't like the souped up skills though, its too cryptic to be useful when you don't know how to trigger it, and its game breaking when you do know.

not in that order. I played the GBC and SNES version of 3, DS for 5, both PS2 and 3DS for 8, and S for 11.
