That's all of the appeal. The fact it turned into a great game is a bonus.
There's a reason the box art looks like this and focuses on the character it does, and not Marth, Fox, or Falcon, that even then would already be more appealing from being featured in good games, rather than OC shit.
There's a certain irony about fighting games (moreso from arcade days, even the kusoges included) being a treasure trove of compelling character designs vs platform fighters falling into just about every modern audience seeking or made in an echo chamber pitfall possible.

It's like 99% of the appeal, literally 99%. If we're being extremely generous and assuming that there are 20,000 people who play competitive Ultimate, that's less than 0.04% of the game's units sold (35-37 million units). In reality, the number of competitive players is definitely below that, as the biggest tournaments in the world (Kagaribi, Supernova, Genesis) max out at ~2,500 entrants. 99% of people who buy Smash just want to play as their favorite Nintendo (and, now, 3rd party) characters and play it as a party game.

That said, there's nothing wrong with making games like this. I've played plenty of platform fighters, and a lot of them are great games. My favorites are PM / P+, RoA1 & 2, and Slap City. I'd argue that all of these have better gameplay than nu-Smash, but that's my point: Smash players don't care about gameplay, they care about Smash.

The most that games like this can hope for is a small, dedicated playerbase. I hope Combo Devils finds one, because it looks fun and unique.

There's three flavors of platform fighter:

Smash, PlayStation All-Stars, MVS, NASB, Slap City, Pool Party (canceled)

Combo Devils
>original IP, but we need a cohesive theme so here's Avatar the Last Airbender, but furry
Rivals of Aether

The first two have animal characters because, y'know, there are a lot of popular animal characters. So even if you're designing pretend video game characters like Combo Devils, you end up with animal characters. Rivals of Aether is the only "furry" platform fighter, and it's simply because Dan needed an easy, marketable theme.

So it's not common at all, actually.

Every other platform fighter is a crossover game or has awful character designs and they still wonder why every game but Smash is dead on arrival
