Why does developing games take so long nowadays, and im looking particularly at small indie titles, for example Deltarune or Mewgenics. What costs so much time, especially considering the low graphical and technological standards of these games?

I'm very obsessed when it comes to making everything perfectly interconnected and immersive. I also add a lot of symbolism and meaning behind each item, sprite, character etc so I have to sit there for a while and go over it. For bigger AAA projects it's a problem of the scope, expectations inflating way out of control. We should have stopped at a compromise between "good enough" graphics and a nice dev time cycle of one to two years
