Some people like impractical gears and such exposed with little regard to how it actually functions, while other are super serious about it and it takes a lot of thought to properly do it. Then there's the actual "punk" part where the villains really should be some kind of authority figures in their world like royalty or industrial corporations and stuff.
steampunk is the genre that even furries and naruto fans think is fucking dorky and lame, thats how far down the totem pole it is.
