Are the GBA versions of these games worth it if I have no interest in playing the extra content? It has low resolution and worse sounding music for sure, but I love the overall presentation of the games. The menus, the text boxes, font, portraits, battle backgrounds, etc. just feels so perfect and quintessentially FF. However the graphics and music do take a hit.>Just mod it with a graphics/music patch.I would be playing the original cartridges on original hardware. Still worth it?
>>732311131I mean they're all great games and if you're them on a real GBA and that's your interest then yeah, they're worth it. Being overly bright and some downgraded audio means they aren't necessarily the best versions of any of those games but not to the point where I think your experience with them would be drastically harmed.
>>732311354Interesting. I just wasn't sure if it was silly to prefer these games for their overall presentation, when I could easily play it on SNES with improved resolution and music. I don't know. Something about the GBA ones click with me more.
That's how I first played the games and I don't feel like my enjoyment was hampered at all by the slight GBA crust. They also have much better translations.
>>732311131>Are the GBA versions of these games worth it if I have no interest in playing the extra content?Yes, but at least you're getting something extra instead of buying the overpriced Pixel Remasters that has zero extra content.
>>732311131i prefere the FF6 GBA port, despite the flaws.FF5 i think is decent on GBA, but pixel remaster i think does more better.and FF4 original DS 3d remake imo is the best. just make sure not to do the US SNES version, its the worst.
No. Just play the original releases.
>>732312145Funny you say that, I think FF5 is the worst looking pixel remaster. I see most people say it's the best and I'm not sure why.
>>732312293It got a balance pass that actually changed up some things.
>>732312293oh it IS the worst looking, but in terms of translations/gameplay fixes, its prob the best, but its still not perfect either.
Emulate 6 with color and sound restoration.
Hot take: people spend way, way too much time agonizing over version differences for games, especially for retro titles. Unless there's a version that's totally broken it doesn't matter that much, just play it on your preferred system of choice.
They look and sound worse, so you might as well just emulate the originals if you don't care for the extras
>>732311131it's fineit's a bugfixed version with better translation than originalsthe graphics and sound patches do not make it anything close to the originals, there's no real reason to use themthe extra content is bad, all of square's added content to 16 bit era games on later systems has been terrible
>>732312437>gameplay fixesLike what? I know one thing they supposedly ruined was order of battle. Whoever goes first in the SNES version would depend on your speed stat or something (that or maybe it was the amount of weight from armor). In pixel remaster I thought it was completely random.
>>732312437>oh it IS the worst lookingYou can say the same with every Pixel Remaster. I don't know what the fuck people are smoking when they say those remasters look great when you take a look at your party during a battle. They lack a lot of detail compared to their original SNES sprites.
>>732311131Best versions of IV and V.
>>7323111314 and 5 are perfectly good versions. Even 6, I first played it on GBA and didn't notice any issues. Since then I do agree that the SNES original is kinda untouchable.
>>732312672I thought 4 looked pretty good.6 is definitely a step down from SNES but it still looks okay.5 in my opinion just looks awful. In SNES I always loved walking around chilling in the towns, because it was cozy and I loved the music. I don't get that feeling in pixel remaster.
>>732312017The pixel remasters removes the grind, gives you autosaves for those moments you fuck up, and fixed the multitude of glitches in the older games.
>>732312827What were some of the glitches? Just curious. Also I'm not sure how I feel about autosaving, especially considering you can just save on the world map. There should be some punishment for losing.
Been playing the gba version of 4 and it's been really good. I have noticed that the encounter rate feels very high and sometimes characters turns will come up instantly after I select their action like they're getting a bonus turn, I dont know if that's an emulator issue or a quirk of the game.
>>732312942GBA version of 4 has bugged ATB which makes enemies barely act and in turn makes it pretty easy
>>732313050The high encounter rate is normal. It's also like this on the DS remake.
>>732311131ff5 gba is worth it.
>>732312942Depends on the version. The worst ones for me are the 6's draw glitch where Relm can fuck up your save, stats not working on weapons in multiple versions, vampire being a full heal in multiple versions of 5, and 4's buffs all deactivating if you enter the item menu mid fight
>>732313086Nope. That's a consequence of using a newer ATB system and affects nearly every port of 4.
>>732312942ff6 original doesn't use magic dodge/block in battle calculationsinstead it uses the physical dodge/block versus magic damage, and block/dodge are additive so if you max it out that character is immune to regular attacks (not scripted ones though?)the later versions separate physical/magic in the way you'd expect
>>732313619I swear the amount of retarded shit I see on easily checked facts is astounding.
>>732313619Not even GBA fixed this?
>>732313849gba fixes it
>>732313832i guess i had the polarity of it wrong, but the bug is as stated otherwisethe physical is what is a null stat, the magic is what determines physical dodging because of it
>>732311131The extra content itself isn't all that interesting. I'd recommend just emulating the gba ports then modding them. I don't know for FF 4 or 5, but there are mods of 6 which fixes the issues
I bought FF4-6 Pixel Remaster, thinking I would never play 1-3.Now I want to play 1-3. And now the PR games have a physical edition. Is it worth buying physical? It's $55, or about $43 if I just bought 1-3 digitally. Is it worth the extra $10 to have it on a cartridge?
>>732316965>Extra $10Extra $12*. I originally said $45 because I factored in taxes.
>>732311131PSP version of 4 is the best one. It includes the After Years but that game is garbagePixel Remaster is technically the best version of FF5 but GBA is okay if you can patch out the bright colorsFF6 is tricky because the SNES version has so many patches and romhacks that enhance the vanilla experience. I experienced slow down on actual GBA hardware. I never tried the Pixel Remaster since it was way more expensive than the others at release.
>>732317156>PSP version of 4 is the best oneLOL
>>732311131>Are the GBA versions of these games worth it if I have no interest in playing the extra content? They're fine. If you don't want the lower quality and want a few QOL improvements (like a bestiary) then they work just fine. There are better versions of FF4 and FF5, but if you don't care about that or just prefer graphics that look like the SNES originals, then these are perfectly fine versions. If you're running on emulator, you might try the PS1 versions of the games. They're closer to the SNES, no extra features outside some skippable cutscenes. The biggest problem is that the PS1 games had slowdown with loading battles, but I'd assume that an emulator would remove that problem. Not sure why you wouldn't just emulate the original SNES at that point, tho.
>>732318186nta, but doesn't it include everything from the gba version plus more?
>>732311131I've been thinking of playing the GBA version of FFVI on my phone while I'm in waiting rooms and whatnot. Maybe I should just emulate the SNES version instead
>>732318605FF4 PSP has better graphics, all the additional GBA content, After Years, and has FF4 Interlude, which is a short bit of content between the end of FF4 and the beginning of After Years. Basically, it would be the definitive version if FF4 on DS didn't have completely different content and a different sort of endgame.I think that the FF4: After Years, 3D version on Steam, might have Interlude as well. But it's been a long time since I checked and you'd still need to get another game to play the normal FF4.
>>732318809>FF4 PSP has better graphicsi don't get why people say this, it's as putrid as the psx nes games, the mobile versions of 5 and 6, and the pixel remastersit just more smooth sprite slop
>>732319018Same, I fucking hate how the PSP ports look
>>732318605>>732318809Disregarding that all the extra content is bad (this includes Interlude+TAY) it has pretty major flaws:>looks awful in every aspect, especially character sprites and spell effects>way easier with the scuffed ATB changes>cropped screen only shows 70% of the original screen>internet references in the scriptThere is absolutely no reason to touch that version unless you're adamant about playing it on an untouched PSP.
>>732319597What's your preffered version then SNES? DS?
>>732311807You can get romhacks to improve the GBA version's graphics, sound, fix bugs, and so on.Should be easy to find them.
>>732321868SNES+Namingway. PS1 version if you can't stand the thought of mods.DS version is too slow and has some baffling options omissions that had been present in the genre for years prior to its release.
>>732319018This. Shit looks like a generic rpg maker game. I can't get over how disgusting the ps1 version of some of the games look.
>>732318186To be completely fair, IV DS is an actual remake, not a different versionAn straight upgrade, yes, but not 1:1 the same game
how come square don't just make clearly definitive versions of games? every single time they release something it's tradeoff town
>>732323480Retardation. Pixel Remaster could've been that with an old graphics toggle and the rerelease extra content as free DLC that you can choose to download (or also as a toggle, of course) depending on your autism. But no, couldn't give an intern a couple weeks in a corner to finish it, so we get a smattering of changes that range from bug fixes to full system overhauls. There's no fucking consistency, god I hate SE.
>>732311131The only reason you should play them is for the extra content, music is a big part of what makes these games good and even emulated with the sound patch they still fall short of the SNES releases
>>732311131Worth it for a proper translation alone, and bugfixes.
>>732324962If I'm playing in Japanese anyway should I play the Super Famicom version then
if you're not bothering with the extra content then no, just play the SNES versions, or for 4, PSP version.
>>732324839It'd take a lot more than that to make a "definitive" version.
