Why did arena shooters die, you ask? It's not because they're too hard. Imagine if every fighting game after Street Fighter 2 was just clones of Street Fighter 2, with the same look and all the characters have the same functions with nothing new. People would just play Street Fighter 2 and not the new games. That's what happens with Quake 3.

And if these games try to have an aesthetic, they just copy Quake's or have ugly robots or faceless space marines on non-descript maps without any theme whatsoever. Look at Quake Champions and try to honestly tell me that looks like something non-Arena players will want to play at a time everyone loves nu-Doom and boomer shooters.

Wanna save arena shooters anon? Play Straftat, play Open Fortress, look into Midnight Guns, stuff with new weapons, mechanics, movement, presentation. Get your friends on them, you're not gonna get anything from those other games that don't do anything to innovate this stale genre and don't care about dressing it nicely and then say "oh i guess zoomers just aren't interested anymore"

Do you honestly think that if a new Doom came out with this kind of art direction, or rather, lack thereof, that people wouldn't say it looks bad?
No, if a Quake came out looking like Dark Ages, at least people wouldn't say it's ugly. They actually give a shit about art direction when they make a single player game.
