Do you prefer cutscenes to do your storytelling? Or stand around and wait for AI to finish talking storytelling?

I prefer reading the wiki to understand the poorly thought out and horribly implemented story

fpbp
Also standing around waiting for Alyx is one of the worst segments of any game ever, and it's constant. Cutscenes are skippable, this bullshit is not.

Text screen with 2 paragraphs

I like not explaining SHIT environmental storytelling that is baked into gameplay, and also not a killer if you don't get it.

>THE PRESIDENT HAS BEEN KIDNAPPED BY NINJAS
>ARE YOU A BAD ENOUGH DUDE TO SAVE THE PRESIDENT?

Half Life 2's neat because it commits to an immersive experience. The control is never taken away from the player. Every step Freeman takes, is a step the player takes. It's a respectable design decision.

That said, I do enjoy a well directed cutscene.

Player is always in control but the player doesn't have access to gameplay
How novel

Cutscenes are most preferable, but for a more "immersive" experience I like how Half-life locks you in a room for story exposition. The absolute worst is when the game tries to do story while you're trying to play the game.

I always thought that was the absolute worst. Cutscenes in good games done well served as a nice breather between the action. You beat a boss, got through a tough section, and here was 45 seconds of non-interactive movie to cool off until the next section. But HL decided you didn't need to relax, you had to suddenly play cameraman and follow around the NPCs waiting for the scripted triggers. It was the absolute worst possible way of doing it. Force the player to stay in active control AND prevent them from doing anything actually interesting. Like, I cannot form the sentences necessary to explain how utterly abhorrent the very idea of HL style cutscenes are.

It gets even worse on repeated playthroughs.

i really don't mind standing around waiting for the NPC to press the button but jesus christ just DO NOT STOP OR SLOW ME DOWN EVERY TIME
I am so sick of Crawling, shimmering through walls and vents suddenly pulls out a phone and has to walk at a snail pace so that they can throw paragraphs at me at least let me fuck around in a room so i can at least look at things
