>magic, by its very nature, supposed to be overpowered as fuck>gamedevs: uhhh we need to make it so that it's on par with the dude bonking with a sword
>>732323703>supposed to be overpowered as fuckThe slinging fireballs shit is silly power rangers tier crap invented in modern fantasy. In classic mythology and literature magic is usually more about curses, potions, subtle manipulation, etc. not being invincible or being a one man armyFor instance the witches in Shakespeare you could just walk up and kill them with a sword, no problem. If anything having stuff to prevent this from happening like CC is what's overpowered
>by its very natureyeah clearly you know the real nature of this ill-defined impossible thingnot to mention simpler tricks are just as fun as DUDE BIGGEST FIREST BALL, which you'd know if you played real shit like arx fatalis or dark messiah
>>732323703>game lore talks about sorcerers and magicians using their power to distort reality and sow destruction across the land>tells tales of how entire armies could be laid low by powerful wizards>magic in game boils down to shitty stat buffs that last for a couple minutes max, a fireball that does the same amount of damage as a sword, or a spell that makes enemies attack each otheror>game lore talks about an extremely powerful magic artifact that enabled the wielder to take on armies>artifact was sealed away at great cost for the good of the world>find it in game>+15 magic skill, +50 mana
well a lot of them provide explanations for that, maybe the swordbearers are wizards themselves, or that high leveled swordsmen use magic without realising it, etc.still who cares cool is more important than coherence
>>732323976one of the things i liked in elin is how they incorprated speed into turn based combat, since high leveled monsters perform like 7 actions while you perform 1it portrays how overpowered they are visually, unlike power or whatever which is just numbers
