Could be both, because that room is one of the "fire fly" rooms that's programmed to get darker if enemies are killed.
The camera control is very deliberate to not move until you move through the wall though.
The "fish tank" room in Maridia that has those pink space pirates, leading into the turtle room, is one of the other other places to have a passable wall like that.

It's the only intended way out of that room anyway, the south exit takes you back to the junction that's between the one-way rising-acid room, and the path to the Ridley boss room.
The east exit is a one-way path that you enter from the top, exit from the side, so the top-left is the only way to leave.

Yeah, it's technically possible but you need a shitload of energy, and the nerves to do it because you can't space jump through that iirc, you have to get to the east wall and wall-jump up the whole way, whilst also opening the door at the top whilst risking not getting inside after first opening it.
I play a lot of Super Metroid rando and have had to do this a couple of times, but rando is often played with QoL like mid-air spin that lets you resume space jumping or wall jumping.
