Imo Risen 1 is a worthy spiritual successor to Gothic 1 but both games don't hold a candle to Gothic 2 and NOTR

Only the first act, the second half of the game is trash, also the sequels are so much worse they bring down the franchise as a whole.
Why they never bothered with a consistent backstory is beyond me, how hard can it be?

Played this as a kid and couldn't figure it out. The only thing I remember about it was that joining the magic/inquisitor faction was a really long process. In hindsight that's actually a cool idea though, with magic being restricted to a small number of highly trained people. Wish more RPGs did that rather than just throwing magic at you.

The end part of this game is rushed, but it's a great game with pretty cool ideas. I though it was pretty neat that monks in the wilderness will beat you up and forcibly initiate you into their faction if you're not careful with exploration in the beginning.

I have an annual urge to replay Gothic 2. And I have done it many times. But never ever I got an urge to come back to Risen. It just has no soul.

It's alright, but simply not nearly good enough to compete with G1 and 2. I can't really think of anything Risen did BETTER than those two, despite having come out years later.
In the end, I'd rather just play one of the dozens of Gothic mods instead of replying Risen.
