Never played a Dragon Quest game before and wanting to play my first one, was thinking of just starting with 7 since its gonna be coming out tomorrow, is it a good one to start with? i could play any of the ones that are on steam if you would recommend one of the other ones
>>
Start with fan-translated Dragon Quest I on the Famicom and work your way chronologically through the series, casual ass nigga

I'm guessing /dqg/ never did an update for that since then?

Yea just play that or 11

It's funny how the devs themselves make it extra complex for people who want to jump in late. For example:

>best way to experience DQ1-3 is to at least play DQ1 before DQ3
>best way to experience DQ1-3HD is to play 3HD before 1-2HD

The literal only way is to play everything (yes everything) in release order for the proper, intended experience according to the devs.

His name is a pun on 'Jack of All Trades', which describes a person capable of doing many things.

Anyone know how the new Kiefer stuff is? That's the only thing that could get me to play an even further pared down of VII than the 3DS one.
>>
>>732331010
Yeah, sure why not. Try the demo and see how it fits you.
11's also a great first DQ game. DQ3 if you're a fan of retro games any version apart from the mobile phone/switch port is good.
>>
just play 11

Yes but be sure to play the real game
>>

The original nes translations of Dragon Warrior I-IV are fine and are a vast improvement compared to their famicom counterparts
>>
>>732331010
Start with DQXI. It is the most developed DQ game with the best writing and gameplay of the series. The best games of the series after it are IV, V and VIII, any of them would have been better first DQ games than what Square Enix is prioritizing. VII is a divisive game and the super boring story was made up by it having the best dungeon designs ever for a JRPG, now that they are butchering the dungeons and puzzles it is not clear to me what the appeal of VII is.

Just play 11. It goes on sale regularily for about 15 Euros. It's what I did. Great game. I'll play this once it's much cheaper too.
>>
>>732331010
The remake absolutely annihilates the experience thanks to all the "quality of life" -features. Plus it looks and feel really cheap.
But you can try out the demo and see if you like it.

I'd recommend starting with either 3, 5 or 8. Those are all very different games from each other. And if you do play them 3 or 8, play the original releases. DS version of 5 is great if you don't want to play the original.

DQ VII Reimagined has brain dead difficulty in around 20 hours in and I think I'm gonna drop the game for now.

Honestly everytime a dungeon wants to be remotely challenging they either put multiple statues that fully heal you when you touch them or a companion that trivialises the difficulty

Doesn't help that most of the stories so far are very simplistic. The depth of most of these is like that picture of Spongebob and Patrick on a rollercoaster.

This is probably what playing modern Pokemon games feels like

>Honestly everytime a dungeon wants to be remotely challenging they either put multiple statues that fully heal you when you touch them or a companion that trivialises the difficulty

Yeah that's what I noticed from playing the demo. DQXI also did this and it was a dogshit feature there too.
>>
>>732331010
It's the longest game in the series, btw.
Play III, VIII or XI first.

I was stupid enough to preorder the game too since I was so impressed by the demo.

Apparently the pc version has mods that fix most of these problems. I'm hoping it's somehow possible to get these mods working on a modded switch

Good way to ensure you'll probably never want to touch another DQ game in your life.

That sounds true to the original at least, I could probably count on one hand the number of stories that I thought were pretty decent by the end of the game.

I am playing the demo and it starts off with the worst possible JRPG trope: For the first hour or so, you are forced to derp around the first town and city, just talking to random NPCs.

Horii has made all the numbered games since 11 "jumping on points", and the way the franchise has released since XI has been catering to the west.
Example
>Dragon Quest XI S (2017/19)
You start here
>Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai (2020)
Optional anime that acts as a fun side story.
>Dragon Quest: Treasures
Optional spin-off to XI.
>Dragon Quest III: HD-2D (2024)
The "sequel" to XI.
>Dragon Quest: Mark of Erdrick (2025-)
Started releasing and is set after 3 but before 1. Unfortunately, probably won't be done in English until 2030 at the current rate.
>Dragon Quest I&II: HD-2D (2025)
The ending of the XI & III's storyline.
>Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined (2026)
The new distinct story (that is also technically a followup to I&II chronologically if you choose to believe manga and spin-offs).
You can even insert the other spin-offs currently on modern platforms here, with only the Heroes titles and the new DQM not fitting in due to not having their notable numbered titles on anything modern. If we did it that way, the "Horii Approved Modern DQ Route" might look like

>Dragon Quest XI S
>Dragon Quest: Treasures
>Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai (+Infinity Strash)
>Dragon Quest III: HD-2D
>Dragon Quest: Mark of Erdrick
>Dragon Quest I&II: HD-2D
>Dragon Quest Builders
>Dragon Quest Builders 2
>Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined

(this is also why I believe the next title will be a DQ8 remake/remaster, since that ties itself into the Erdrick trilogy, albeit in a way that makes it obvious it's not the same world. After that will likely be XII followed by remakes of 4-6 and then 9).
>>
>>732340024
It's like 20 minutes long in the remake man
>>
>>732331010
you don't need to resort to the public opinion to make a simple decision like this anon...
>>
>>732340024
The original was 4 hours long.

The feeling of exploration benefited immensely from it (and not having that lame ass fairy) but it was a tard filter they had to remove to appeal to a broader demographic.
>>
why do they look so fucking UGLY
>>
>>732337930
>Start with DQXI. It is the most developed DQ game with the best writing and gameplay of the series.
It seemed like cookie cutter shit to me. If this is the best de DQ franchise has to offer then it's really fucking grim.
>>
>>732340610
Yep it is the best, move on to better series like Neptunia.
