He's written too much fan material for the series to not understand Sonic. No, I think he understands Sonic just fine. More than fine, even. The issue is that, like many Sonic fans, he wants to write HIS Sonic, and ONLY his Sonic. Which, to him, is SatAM and Archie Sonic. He obviously stopped caring about the actual games after a certain point, and it really shows.
It's Kirby, how could anyone fuck it up? It's the easiest thing in the world, just draw a cute puffball doing cool things and eating. Flynn couldn't fuck that up.
