Imagine getting these CRTs and playing dog shit nintendo games on them. Get real.

I would rather see them smashed with a hammer then sold for premiums by some smug reddit faggot

>>732348964
CRTs are only worth it if you find one them at the side of the road or in the trash, or at worst buying one at a flea market for sub100$ prices. Anything more than that you might as well buy memescalers if 90s gaming console quality bothers you that much.
>>
Why the fuck would you restore such a shitty CRT?

The thing I hate about the CRT market is that it's overpriced or in the dumpster with nothing in between.

You aren't allowed to have one unless you overpay but if you don't take it the owner WILL put it in the trash (but you can't curb-claim it).
>>

I got my 28” Quintrix from a school that was going to be demolished. It was hanged from ceiling and I just put two desks on top of each other and climbed on top of them and held it with other hand and screwed it off with other hand. I don’t know how I managed to get it down in one piece, it weighs 40kg. I somehow found service manual for it from the internet and then I spent two nights studying how those things work and then went to service menu and adjusted the picture to perfection. That took hours. It’s from year 2000 and used maybe once a month for an hour so it has long time left. Thank you for reading my blog post

Surely some of these old CRTs have exploded and killed a retro gamer or two
>>
>>732350053
Man I hate these fuckers. I was trying to buy a laptop for work a couple of years back on ebay amongst some other sites. Some of the listings I was looking at were listed as "open to offers" and you get 3 offers. I went with 20% off, 15% off, and then 10% off. Every single one of them rejected all 3 offers. One of them even messaged me as if I had wasted his time. No asshole, you have wasted MY fucking time, inviting me to make an offer when you're only willing to give pennies off the price, fucking cunt.

I just finished recapping my hand-me-down 32" Sony I grew up with. boards are still disassembled, so today i'm gonna reassemble and test to make sure I didn't fuck it up, then do an RGB mod after.

It's not that easy. Disassembly is complicated, then you have to go through and catalogue all the caps. Then you have to find and order appropriate replacements. Then you have to actually recap a fuckton, and removing the old ones can be a pain even with a desoldering gun. Then reassembly and testing, and iif you screwed anything up its exponentially more work to identify the issue. All for a niche hobby with not a lot of buyers, for something so heavy and bulky that it'd need to be local

Not exactly easy money
>>
>>732353294
These were "buy it now" listings, not auctions.
>>
>>732354024
the funny thing is that PVMs do nothing for a video game that a normal CRT wouldn't, they were for VIDEO AND BROADCAST PROFESSIONALS. The thicker scanlines are not worth the overprice, and you could say such characteristic makes them worse for video games than standard CRTs. PVMs are best suited for the thing retro fags will never use them, which is watching video, ironically.

>>732363614
The thing is, the demand there isn't from people who want to play video games, but from other collectors.
That's why retro gaming fairs always end badly (in my experience). You have two audiences with totally different intentions surrounding the same products.
On the one hand, there are people who are genuinely interested in video games and don't understand how obsolete products, often in poor condition, can be so expensive, when they know that 99.9% of all the guys who share their interest won't pay those prices.
On the other hand, there are the collectors, many of them members of a cult of lunatics who worship objects.

When there are 1,000 players in a room, and those 1,000 think the price of the games being sold is absurd, the collector doesn't care, because his audience is not video game players, but cultists who collect obsolete objects, all of which need such extensive repairs that it's easier to just throw them all in the trash.

I like my PVM but yeah there's plenty of other good production-grade monitors. I was always on the lookout for Ikegami ones but they're out of reach nowadays too. I actually work at a place you would think would be good for dumpster diving but I rarely see that kind of stuff come through unfortunately. One of our clients actually hooked me up with a consumer Trinitron once though when I was on site. Was pretty sick, I still have it in my shed as my backup CRT. Pretty good size, too.
>>
>>732355089

>>
>>732353410

>>
>>732355434
>how is 13 inch small
My 17" is small even if I sit in front of it.
Hell even my 27" led feels small sometimes. I think 27" is the bare minimum and 32" is porbably optimal when you sit in front of a screen.
>>
>>732349118
What would you play on them
>>
>>732364470
But players aren't buying it. Do you think that if someone is really interested in some shitty Nintendo 64 game (the worst mainstream console ever released), they're going to spend $1,000 instead of downloading the game for free on the Internet?
This market isn't for people interested in video games, it's for collectors. These are people who are trying to profit from the "mystique" that certain objects have among those who worship them.
The side effect of this is that something that could cost $5 if the only interested audience were really those who want to play video games now costs $500 because now the interested parties are quasi-religious collectors. That's why normal gamers openly hate these guys.
>>
>>732354494
>thicker scanlines are not worth the overprice
You'd have thinner scanlines on a PVM due to them usually having a higher line count than your average consumer set. Especially in Europe, though, there's no reason to ever consider a PVM/BVM unless you REALLY hate scanlines (just use an OLED at this point) or if the PVM is extremely high end like the L5 series.

>>
>>732348964

That and they require custom cables.

The PVMeme craze is fucking stupid.
>>
>>732364389
Retards think that just because TV is a Trinitron it's worth thousands. In reality there are only few models that are worth that much.
>>
>>732367546
Even RGB doesn't look as good as composite or s-video on most games
>>
>>732367436
What generally happens is
>Have new/improved technology
>It's expensive, but affordable to people
>The more people buy them the more of a competition it creates between companies
>This improves the technology of the product over all while bringing the price down for the consumer
>The better you understand the technology the more refined it becomes, the less time you need to spend on research, you understand this shit like the back of your hand and streamline it
>Because you're eliminating all of these overheads and the technology is becoming more efficient you save a bunch of money which is then passed on as a saving to the consumer who enjoys a better product at a cheaper price
>Gradually the technology evolves and moves on
Which is basically what you have with TVs. There used to be a repair store on every fucking corner, but once it got to the point where it was cheaper just to buy a new TV, well, that's why you don't see repair stores on every corner now.
You might think "well if it's old technology we should be able to make millions of them cheap as door nails" and you would think so, but not really. Same reason A person from now and a cowboy from 1850 would have very different experiences in the desert when they're both only armed with a book of matches.
>>

>>732368106

The difference between RGB and composite is like night and day, I literally feel like I put my glasses on with RGB, it's that much better.
I don't care if it does dithering if the price for it is for everything to look blurry like someone smeared vaseline all over the screen.

>>732369285

Imagine charging $1000 for something that looks like it's from the bar in a John Candy movie. Probably stinks of cigarettes too.
