ITT: good games that started bad trends

>godfather of the brown-n-bloom aesthetic
>popularized cover mechanics, turning every shooter into a stationary shooting gallery

wait until you realize real life is a cover shooter hack n slash

good thing space marine came to teach us that covering up is for pussies.
facts/jokes aside, i loved gears of war, game was both beautiful and badass.
very few things beat the satisfaction of finishing off your enemies with a chainsaw attached to your assault rifle. shit was so cash.

>made RE focus on action more than horror for over a decade
>along with God of War, it popularized quicktime events

Dark Souls, Path of Exile

Wrong. Sands of Time brought about bloom, and Warrior Within added the brown.
>>
Companion romances, specifically. They're not inherently bad but many felt shoehorned into other RPGs and were often underbaked and badly-written.

Gears of War gets a lot of undeserved flak for what it popularised because the games that copied it did so poorly.
>>
>>732357282
pretty much every great innovative/novel game ever

Horrifyingly terrible thread
>>
it's been hard being a gears fan
>7th gen - everyone loves it
>8th gen - everyone hates it
>9th gen - gears 6 seems to be vaporware, also everyone still hates it
>>

Hopefully they course correct with E-Day

if it ever comes out. it wasn't even in the showcase last month and it's supposed to release this year.

It's more gray, like Doom 3. And it's about post-apocalyptic nuked cities. 2 and 3 have more color because they move away from strictly abandoned urban or industrial areas.
>turning every shooter into a stationary shooting gallery
If you're really good at aiming and shooting, sure, you can play it like that. But if you choose to play on Insane, chances are, you will be bullied out of cover pretty often. Locusts are deadly up close.

it's literally the opposite, what are you talking about

I was a Gears fan, on PC. Then I didn't get to play any more Gears until Gears 4, a full decade later, which was the fifth game in the series.

This game killed TPS genre.
>>
GoW is really good. I'm sorta surprised they haven't tried to make it an esport.
>>

WALL BOUNCING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TPS GENRE
>>
>>732360981
women in squad - no buy
>>
didnt GoW2 popularize Horde survival modes too
>>
>>732358158
>made RE focus on action more than horror
That was RE2
>>
>>732365696
The TPS shooter genre was always bad. Good games like Max Payne, RE4, and Gears were always the outliers.
>>
>>732369424
Yes. While other games had done it before, from GoW2 onward they were always referred to as Horde modes and often contained some tower defense elements. Which is funny because Halo added it right after with ODST but it just didn't stick around compared to Gears making it a staple.

FPS < TPS.
>>
