I've noticed this strange phenomena where people younger than me absolutely refuse to ever use search engines when they don't know something and instead either insist a complete stranger directly tutor them or they blame literally anything and everything other than themselves for being an inept retard.

That's the problem with gen Z onwards. They're what gen x and older saw millenials as, the generation that won't try after failing once.

Crazy how the cycle repeats with uncs saying the new generation doesn't know as much as the old generation. Recent versions of windows OS have zip extractor built in, you don't even have to download 7zip. Unzipping a file in windows is no more complex than copy pasting it. But zoomers have trouble with even using a filesystem, so maybe thats a bad comparison.

it's called learned helplessness.
It's the reason people got bothered when you'd spoonfeed people sauce. Teach a man to fish and all that.
But if the man doesn't wanna learn, it's all fucked
>>
I've heard it said that stupidity isn't a failure to know but a refusal to learn. I didn't know how to run emulators when I was 14, I didn't understand things like mounting isos or finding bios files, but these are problems that are solved with a simple search. If anything it should be easier than ever, if there's one thing AI is (supposedly) good for it's answering simple questions like this.

>What went so wrong with them?
>>
>>732366690
It certainly is. I actually noticed that with my boomer parents and their contemporaries.
It's not that they CAN'T learn anything, they simply refuse.
In the 80s they had no problems navigating teletext, programming their VCR, or many other things with just two or three buttons on the side or back of the device.
Today I hear "I have read enough manuals in my life", as if that would motivate me to help them if they just refuse to understand, or would be any kind of explanation for or absolution of refusing to learn anything.
If I get a smartphone and after a week know it better than my mom who uses it way more often, there's something wrong.
>>
>>732366953

>>
>>732366690
>stupidity isn't a failure to know but a refusal to learn
That is a stupid definition, ironically.
Stupidity can't be cured, ignorance can.
If you're stupid you can never become intelligent.
>>
>>732363295
It is unacceptable to be that tech illiterate unless you are some 80 year old boomer.
>>
>>732367217
Ignorance is not a refusal to learn though, it's the unlearned state. So yeah, if you refuse to learn, you stay ignorant, but the refusal itself is not ignorance.
>>
>>732367331
If ignorance is not then neither is stupidity.
The persistance of ignorance is refusal to learn. The persistance of stupidity is inevitable. You can't fault a cat for not understand how to unzip a file. Not all men have the same potential.
>>
>>732367509

It's not "zoomers" in their totality, it's a specific subset who during critical periods of brain development only had an education consisting of webcam meetings. Retrospectively the entire initiative was a complete failure, with the corpus exhibiting short-lived but massive spikes in illiteracy and such correlating perfectly with the time period.
>>
>>732363662

lol every OS since like Windows ME has had zip built in. you double click the zip file it opens like a folder. It's not like back in 1995 when you needed to download WinZip and it would nag you to register and pay for it (I don't know anyone who actually did)

They really focused on internet safety such as how not to use any personal information, don't even tell people your real name etc.

That's ALL gone now it seems and we have regressed.

Nah brah back in the day I compiled everything and went through ten thousand menus to get anything done. I definitely wasn't raised on pajeet code and I'm definitely not retroactively applying modern bloatware standards to an era where you had a thousand programs that a monkey could use each specializing in a single task. It's not like the endless quest to make everything more accessable by retarded shitskins made it vastly more difficult for people with an iq above 60 to make sense of all the failsafes and pointless menus.

It's because computers used to be donated to schools by big corpos as a way to indoctrinate kids into your environment.

It used to be Apple, but then they stopped giving a fuck about the PC side of the business so they donated iPads.

Now it's chromebooks, so you have a bunch of morons using google docs that can only use cloud storage. That's why they don't understand folder structure, that's why they don't have the mindset to do things they're not told. They've been raised in a box and they can't see anything but a box.

Learned to use torrents, learned about trouble shooting and how to find relevant information on the internet. I refuse to believe all kids these days just get everything they want served on a silver platter to the point that they have no need to go through these steps. I'm still doing the same shit to this day.
>>
A lot of us learned by doing because we had to do stuff with files, folders and zip programs. People today don't have to do anything, just push a button and it's done for them.
There is no desire to look deeper into how their stuff works, they just need it to work.

It's good at basic tech support, most people aren't good at computing.

In China, kids are given computer and technology courses from elementary school to high school. In America, we are given zero technology classes or classes on how computers work or function unless it's an elective. This has made us a group of tech-illiterate retards who can't even operate our smart phones. Kids only learn by doing, and ipads and chromebooks are specifically made to keep people in walled gardens who can't understand their PCs.

There's like a tiny sliver of tech-literacy from people who had to learn how things worked in order to operate a computer, and they're in their 30s, now.

Unironically feel really bad for kids nowadays, I wasn't poor as dirt growing up but we were solidly lower middle class and emulating shit on the few "major" electronics we could afford is what got me into gaming to begin with. Eventually our financial situation improved and I ended up getting consoles and handhelds proper, but I can't imagine who I'd be without piracy-one of my favorite games of all time is Golden Sun and I wouldn't even know what that is without scrolling a rom site and being enticed by the cover art thumbnail like I was browsing a store irl.

What segment of the population has the highest fertility rate in the West? The poor.
It's strictly cultural, economy has nothing to do with it.
Maybe you'll have a few people have one child but feminists won't magically start having 4 or more children just because you hand them over 1 million euros.
You can live with less if you want. People don't want to, especially women don't want to.
Take away control from women and you'll start having high fertility rates. It's not rocket science.

There's an age group ranging from those who were at most teenagers by Eternal September 1993, to those born after the release of the iPhone in 2007. These are the people who know how to use computers and the internet.

Most people before that are so old, they'd rather call a help desk phone number than search online, and they still think of videos as something that come on tape. Everyone born after that grew up with an ipad for a pacifier and tries to tap a book to switch pages.

It turns out computer literacy was not some permanent new feature of humanity but a temporary fad induced by special conditions.

>>732371104 had a good point with "scrolling the front page". Before ~1993 average people found stuff they wanted by browsing, in a literal sense, like opening a newspaper and scanning the page then flipping, walking aimlessly through a store, or flipping between channels on TV. After 2007, average internet users find stuff by passively scrolling, which is just a more efficient version of the same thing. It's only in the brief window between where "searching" was a thing that mattered and people living in that time developed a skill to adapt.

not like it matters. one whiff of the word "extract" and a normie will lose it.

>It turns out computer literacy was not some permanent new feature of humanity but a temporary fad induced by special conditions.
It really is just a skill that you learn. Notice China and India aren't having these major brain drains over basic technology features? Their schools require them to learn the hard way on using technology with computers that aren't normally online. So they have to do offline research the hard way in computer classes that range from K-12.

It's just the west who has neglected updating their curriculum and think computer class is handing their kids chromebooks and never speaking of how they work or what they're doing. This is by design, btw. We're being intentionally dumbed down so the world passes our generations by and we become the dumb fuck hillbillies of the world who have to call China and India for tech support.

This is in service to the ultimate goal:

All modern zoomer culture just seems to be black culture but watered down to be gay(er), at least millennials had our own culture for each race (metal/emo/punk for whites, rap/hip-hop/crunk for blacks, cholo/lowrider culture for Hispanics).

It really is the difference between doing math with a calculator vs doing it out by hand. There was a huge outcry in the 60s about letting students do calculations using calculators in class beacuse it just gave people the answers. Eventually, calculators got banned for the purposes of forcing kids to do it by hand again. We're entering another row over Calculators only this time: it's AI chatbots that do all thinking for you if you let it.

Sure, there were and are people in our age range who can't use computers even at the basic level, but if they were at the age where they needed to do schoolwork with computers, you either sink or swim.

It's a difference in attitudes toward education. I'm too old to ever have chromebooks, but I don't think computer classes could fix this issue. It's more about daily use habits, because K-12 in America is practically daycare, so useful skills are something you have to either seek out as an elective, wait for college, or learn on your own.

Sure you can take a class about what the parts of a computer are, how to type, etc. I had all this in 2000s America. but I didn't learn to type from typing class. I learned from playing online games that demanded me to type fast... to this day I don't do any of the shit they taught us.
In other words, I learned by doing what I wanted. That's how kids learn in a country that doesn't reward education. What do kids "want" to do now? The games they play are all apps, they watch videos on apps, their social media are apps, it's all toddlerfied touch screen shit. So they don't have an opportunity to learn at all.

There was a convenient model, for a time, where education could slack off and remain on cold war era curricula, because kids just seemed to "naturally" learn these newfangled technology things, so no change was needed. Then all of a sudden corporations decided even literal retards must able to use the internet, and all internet-connected devices were redesigned to reduce any learning to the absolute minimum. Now this is somehow "best practice" and shit like copying a fucking file is relegated to college level instruction.

That's not really the same thing. No matter how you think about it, or whether you use a calculator or not, or know how to calculate it without a machine, 2+2=4. But if you get an essay question asking "should people have the right to free speech, why or why not?" and you copy/paste the answer some corporate mouthpiece gave you that's a very different matter. Some questions aren't so simple they have one calculable answer, sure you can use LLMs like a search engine and research the question, but at the end of the day you have to engage in something called critical thinking. Whereas no matter much you think about it or philosophically masturbate over whether numbers are real or not, 2+2 is still 4.

I think they're banned in those earlier years because they want to teach mental math, which is faster than using a calculator

Calculators are basically a shortcut to getting a deterministic answer, AI on the other hand presents everything as a deterministic answer even when it isn't, which serves to essentially brainwash people in repeating whatever it says. Or alternatively, agreeing with whatever the user said and helping them brainwash themselves with their own delusions. tldr there's no substitute for critical thinking, but a calculator doesn't skip any critical thinking so it's not the same.

>What went so wrong with them?

corporations gate keep this knowledge from them. I was looking at my cousin's apple computer the other day. And he needed help installing something. The recommended app wasnt working propperly, so we decided to just go through the motions and figure out a work around. The company in question offered an alternative installation that came in a zipped folder. We downloaded it, and I sought to open it yet..... the mac os refused to open it. Upon clicking it, the opperating system claimed the file was unsafe and told us to fuck off. This is how modern jeetware works. It takes control from the user, and lies to them constantly. Theres nothing to learn or figure out because the situation to do so is never presented to the end-user in the first place, especially when dealing with mobile devices or apple computers.

The older generation is told to trust the state and the corporations. The older generation, incorrectly, assumes that the knowedge they know will be passed on through these proxies. But neither the state nor the corporations have any kind of incentive todo so. Its just your own wishful thinking that you believe school will educate your kids, or that the information for self study is widely available when it isnt. Times have changed, everything is locked down, and the things you take for granted, the ability to pirate and emulate and search for things for free, are slowly being erased from the public's collective conscienceness. Local ai is going to make things 100 times worse. People instinctively reject regular ai, but for some reason they think they have more control, or that it is some how safer/more secure to run models locally. So now the corporate focus is to trick mass adoption of 'local' ai tools to get everyone into the ai ecosystem. Pretty soon retards wont even know how to turn a computer on or off, relying entirely on personal vocalization to order their ai servant to do so for them...

Sure but I don't think of ChatGPT, Grok, or Gemini as being reliable sources of information and nobody else should either.

I just had this the other day at work where a server decided to grenade the /boot/ partition because of a failed update. Gemini and Copilot were insistent that it was a configuration error. I read the manual, and I knew from similar problems in the manual that they were wrong. If I had followed their advice I would have made the problem much, much worse.

The only reason I knew to do that is because I know AI isn't perfect and I don't rely on it for my answers. If I was someone who felt that AI was reliable all of the time, I wouldn't blame the AI or myself and wouldn't have fixed anything from it.

>I'm still in awe that it seems like "computer class" is no longer a thing in middle and high school in America.
My school district still has computer classes, they teach you on how to use them since kindergarten to understand computers. Not sure if they still do it in elementary school, but middle and high school still have them as electives. Got glass trophy award in high school for being the only one who completed 9 computer/business classes, and my name was cited for excellence in speech given by business teacher. Only few students get 7-8 classes done.

tbqh i think we were the only generation where being 'good at the computer' was basically mandatory for both education and entertainment

I like how Windows 10+ blue screens were just
"uh oh! your Computer did an oopse woopsie! :( please stand by while we scrape the data and send a log file, No we won't say what caused it sorry :(" I think its a bit more verbose nowadays, but cmon man at least give more of a hint.

>most people are illiterate
Some people cant use a search engine and context clues to find what song they just listened to. They cant type

That's all you need. Granted, search engines like google have been sucking ass lately too, but there are other methods and sites too.

I work in retail
I have had customers come to the front as i am locking up at closing because google ai says a different time and complain. I just say to stop taking ai as truth and just scroll down a tiny bit
Same thing in games or other media i enjoy, people just spout the first thing that shows up in google which is basically always the ai lookup and take it as gospel, and worse is some people take major offence when you tell them to stop reading the ai slop
>>
>>732375106
Yeah, there was a synergy between entertainment and education so kids accidentally learned useful skills for fun. Now everything is an app so that's gone and everyone goes back to being dumber.
>>
>>732363406
>saying this when search engines are intentionally turned into shit so it's rather an hour of arguing with AI away

The only way to restore birth rates is:
1) Ban contraception
2) Ban abortion
3) Ban women from tertiary education

I'm not saying it's politically viable but it's the only way I see. Prove me wrong

I do not know a single person under the age of 30 that knows how to torrent. Ultimately, this is a consequence of young people not knowing how to use a computer at all, because phones exist.

>>732363406
They can do it but they often don't want to take the step. It's easier to just buy the game on a storefront of play something else. They don't want to even try and tackle their lack of knowledge.
This is quite terrifying. Realizing education wasn't just about teaching you things, but imparting on you the courage to actually try out new things you don't understand at first. All the knowledge at your fingertips means nothing if you don't actually go look for it.

I'm a millennial and right now I don't even know how to do pgp, sha hashes.

I actively steer new people away from torrents now because copyright holders like to use their own seeder IPs in a lot of the most popular torrent trackers now.

Torrents are not as safe as they use to be,

Nowadays, I teach people how to web scrape their media from various file servers either on the terminal or using APIs.
>>
>>732375328
You literally cannot do that anymore even if you wanted, we'd have to do some shit like in Islamic countries' sharia law type patriarchal government, where women aren't allowed to have autonomy anymore, the cat's out of the bag with that topic. Either way feminism has been hijacked by transsexuals as well for their own movement.
