Never played a Dragon Quest game before and wanting to play my first one, was thinking of just starting with 7 since it just came out today, is it a good one to start with? i could play any of the ones that are on steam if you would recommend one of the other ones
8 (PS2)
>>732368307start with XIS and decide whether it's a type of game for youif yes, then 8, it is the best DQ game but random encounters always sucked dong then the rest, they're all good gamesI have mixed feelings about VII Reimagined, the new artstyle is awful and it's supposedly dumbed down, but it still looks fun
I'd start with 8 or 1-3. 7 is gonna burn you out.
>>732368307i already bought DQ3 squareenix intern based in mumbai. go do so IT tickets, rajesh.
>>7323683077R has been described by a reviewer as "baby's first DQ" so yeah sureBut if you want something more old school, you play either 3 which has way less modern mechanics but it's still a solid entry or 8 which has some added features like weapon proficiency that makes it more in line with later entries, or 11 which is the latest mainline and a good game on its own (your opinion on the third act may vary)
>>732368772XIS is the most fleshed out one. Going back to, say 3, will feel like a downgrade. I think 3 is the best one. It has most of the systems of the latter games, while still being simple enough that sequel feel like improvements.
>>732368895there's shitload of cut content anon, it's now no longer than other games
>>732368772>but random encounters always sucked dong3DS version has overworld encounters
I just finished 5 on the SNES and It's really bland. I get they wanted this big scope for the plot which is sort of neat but still basic. The gameplay feels like it's stuck in the NES era.
>>732368307If it interests you then go for it. I think they designed this version with the intent to make it more beginner friendly, there are difficulty sliders if you want to use them.
>>732368307Its a good game but a shit remake. If you've never played the original and dont know what the remake changed for the worse and ruined then go for it.
>>732368307I'm gonna try and make a comprehensive list out of the ones I played>1 - extremely basic, you have a single party member for the whole thing, the plot is also extremely basic, it does not go anything beyond "kill the dragon, save the realm and plow the princess" but there's a charm to it I can't explain, remake doesn't add much other than the "princess carry the princess literally everywhere" feature but if you want to see where it all began, that's the one I'd recommend, GBC version is barely any different from the original>2 - you now have party members, big change, remake is as good as it gets as far as remakes go, it adds onto the original in every aspect and is what I'd call the definitive version of 2, play the original or the GBC versions if you wish more of your bones were broken>3 - the quintessential entry and the one the japanese love the most, has quite a lot of content and is one of the better entry points, literally any version you pick bar the original is fine, most recent remake removes Pachisi and the casino and I'll never forgive them for it but it does have a monster arena instead so if you like watching cockfights go for that one>5 - a game with three arcs separated into parts of the hero's life and the only one to feature monsters as party members bar spinoffs, a good entry point but the remake doesn't do much to add to the system like later remakes would other than party chat, gameplay is basically the same as beforeToo fucking long so I'll continue in another post
>>732368307DQ7R as a first experience is fine. Let's you fine tune the difficulty as well, which is a plus if you aren't acclimated to turn based games.I vastly prefer the original, but the new one is obviously made for newfags.
>>732370992Cont'd >7 - infamously long entry with enough text to fill an entire cabinet file and I'm not joking, you can look up where they stored the original script for the game, introduces the party chat where the party members would comment on recent events or whatever the NPC you spoke to said, does a lot for characterization and helps you be more endeared to them, also has a class system (introduced in 6 which I never played) giving you a lot of choices in customization, some skills in the original can only be acquired by mastering different classes, 3DS adds monster hearts which can be used to change party members into monsters and rebalances classes and skills and trims the fat of the infamously long intro of the original version and removes random encounters in favor of overworld ones, I just started playing reimagined so I can't help you there >8 - great entry point, a fan favorite and probably the average /v/irgin's favorite, ditches the class system in favor of weapon proficiency instead which is functionally the same, except you allocate the points on level up and get skills and passive buffs at certain milestones. Also added the Tension system which is essentially giving up a turn to deal more damage the next turn (or keep stacking it and you get to see the hero go super saiyan), except the enemy can do it too. Has an insanely good OST and still doesn't look dated due to the art direction. Go with PS2 version if you want to see it with the original visuals or the 3DS version for extra party members, extra postgame content and a few rebalances in weapon proficiency at the cost of crispy 360p visuals.>9 - feels more like 3 2.0 in terms of structure, you also make your own party, but has a few bits and bobs added to the combat. Fuckton of extra content blocked behind a dead online but you might be able to download it somewhere. Not a great entry point imo. There's still 11 to go and the posts are too big, good god
>>732368948Oh wow. That's kind of disappointing.
>>732370992>>732371889>11 - latest entry, also an excellent entry point, has the most modernized systems with skill trees and team attacks that all do their own thing, effects vary from damage with ailments added, unique party buffs and beefed up nukes to a chance of turning all enemies into metal slimes (obviously doesn't work on bosses), lengthy campaign, great cast, good difficulty curve, lots of extra content and a third act that you may or may not like. Grab the XIS version on your platform of choice, though iirc on PC there's a mod that restores the original textures for a better looking game.Never played 4 or 6 and 10 hates gaijins so can't comment on those
>>732368307How is the class system in this? Is it more in depth than the original?
