Spending 10 turns just starting the fucking map looking for enemies is torture. Not to mention you have to run around looking for individual groups of enemies.
I can't place my finger on why but XCOM 2 didn't feel awful in this way, I guess it's because the maps are a little more linear and you get a good idea of where you need to go.

The maps in this are fuckhuge compared to XCOM 2 but almost entirely featureless. The way spotting works also means you have to tiptoe around or get mowed down by any enemies that appear when you have to action points left, and even when you spot them they'll just run off into the fog of war again.

Settlement defense missions are just suicide. Your squad can't hold off 25 fucking guys coming from all directions at once. It just doesn't happen. When you finally get them all retreating, low and behold a civilian dies and they all suddenly becoming wavering.

Playing Ironman/Expert, my best tip is to straight up avoid doing defense missions like the plague. I'm at the point where most of my guys are in rogue army/spec ops gear and still can't reliably defend the zones they want me to.
Other than that, get darby's scout and extra concealment perk, alongside the pirate rags and enjoy being invisible to most things.

Deploy (crouch) your units. Whenever you see a enemy, your next priority should be to find the closest cover and then deploy. That keeps your accuracy up and your casualties down. Keep your squads spread out decently, and plink from range. Your guns are deceptively good at long ranges, but dogshit in CQC. Focus one squad at a time, with melee bugs being priority on bugs, and chaingun/Scav teams being priority on pirates. Take time to evaluate your options with regards to shot accuracy, always try and go for squadwipes, as early game enemies have shit morale and will break if you kill enemies quickly enough in their vicinity. Don't be afraid to disengage if you will take more incoming fire than able to send out. Keep your armor behind your infantry when possible, and use it's ammo to apply suppression on clumped up groups while your squads redeploy. Run over small melee bugs with your armor to save ammo. G3s are really good rifles, but early on you're better off with the M4, because the M4 can apply significantly more suppression in a burst. PACK AS MUCH AMMO AS POSSIBLE EARLY ON.

There's a lot of advanced tactics but it's mostly locked behind prohibitively expensive rare drops in the shop. The early game is fairly mundane but I feel it adds contrast to the midgame (10-15+ hours into the game, lol), where you have a couple of assault squads, a vehicle or two, and a few specialists with support weapons/skills. IMO the main thing that needs to happen is the shop being expanded and the "Rare" drops being actually rare items and not just a random roll for anything on all loot tables.

I'm not sure how exactly it works, but I know for certain that squaddies get more expensive on Darby than others. I think a portion of the SL tax is added to each squaddie.
Brand new save, Darby's maxed out infantry squad with nothing on them besides the default rifle and fatigues costs 183 to Pikes 123. Even after the SL supply tax, her squaddies seem to be slightly more expensive than Pike's (143 to 103), and Carda's squaddies cost virtually nothing like their SL.

Yeah it's insane, I thought I had seen the whole arsenal by midgame but then the rebel convoy mission dropped and their heavy troopers pulled out some plasma-looking grenade launcher I'd never seen before. The "challenging" AI at least, is pretty cringe in these defensive missions. I just set up my guys in defensive positions, and the AI seems to realize that they can't advance on me without getting shot to pieces. So they just mill around in circles outside of my range for the whole mission.

Turn 6 here, for the first time I see some enemies. Apparently, they decided this left flank is my only vulnerable access point, so they've begun piling all their units into that corner.

Starsector was good a few years ago but I can tell the leftist devs are doing their best to fuck it up before full release.

Horizon's Gate is quite good, although everything outside of party combat is very shallow (fleet combat and trading are both very low effort).

What else is there? I wanna be an adventurer in a hostile world trying to make ends meet.

60AP to give 40AP to someone within a pretty large range of him. The ability to move resources to where they're needed quickly is very powerful. You'd place Pike in the middle of your formation and have him reinforce whatever area most needs it.

Personally, I gave him a mortar so he can sit in the middle and shoot mortars at people from his deep position. Kinda goes against all his 'basic weapon' talents though, and he's not the greatest mortar user either, so not sure how good an idea this is.

Math wise Pike cost 20+36+armor cost, i.e. 100+ supply, on level1 with basic carabine in hands. You can give him pipe gun, but can't send him unarmored since he should follow frontliners.
All he do is waste his 60 ap to gain 40 to some1 else in 6 squares range, and move on 2 hexes.
Assualts like Lim or Yaz will have ~300 suplly cost, more with heavy armor. 40% of 300 is 120, that 20 supply is "profit" from transfer ap skill.
Enemy is too far and Lim need to step more than 2 times for reach it? Well, next turn your Pike is useless shit and 100+ supply is dead weight in most important moment.
Also good luck to finish missions in 10 turns, when your Pike two turns behind.
Darby's squad with silenced kbar, chameleon perk and camo cost like 300. She can terrorize and murder enemy squads completely alone. She can even complete some maps solo.
Pike isn't one of best leaders. Darby is, she the best.
