I want to get into it this year, but only against bots
>>732438589Nah, I get it. TF2 is almost twenty years old and is a very rare case of a PvP multiplayer game lasting so long. Most players in casual have been playing for longer than some games' servers last. Newbies get utterly squashed by the pro divebomber soldier/medic, spastic MGE scouts, and min-maxed interp spies who have unnaturally-high skill levels for a genre whose services don't usually last for two decades. TF2 is a pretty cool study of what FPS multiplayer games might evolve into if none of their servers ever went down: overtuned veteran players who can only find challenge against their equals, essentially barring newbies because they don't have 10+ years of gamesense. If skill-based matchmaking is supposed to solve the problem it sure as hell hasn't been working.
>>732439937I'm a day one veteran so I can't really say I'm not blind to whatever challenges new players face, but I still find this hard to believe. Just looking at all the weird RPG and MOBA-like shit in every other modern shooter I can't understand how people would find those easier to learn than TF2. As long as you head towards the front line and spam attacks in TF2 you should eventually start getting kills which slightly help your team. Teams are large, so you under-performing will go unnoticed and you won't receive ire from your teammates for it. That means you can learn the game at mostly your own pace without having to deal with the social conflict of having the spotlight put on you while you throw for your team. It baffles me how 5v5 sweaty compfag ELO grind games are super popular but people still say TF2 is the hard one to get in to.
>>732438589Runs on my Linux machine.
>>732438589Every casual game I que into has loads of newbies.
>>732440978>spawn in>everyone rushes to the nearest corner to stare at>go stare at the corner yourself because that's what the rest of your team is doing>*helmet_headshot.wav*>black screen>xXC0ldKi11azXx killed you. 1 hit(s). 148 damage.>wait two minutes to try again, assuming your team hasn't started a vote kick against youI can't think of a worse introduction to a game
>>732440790Modern newbies don't think being "good" at a game is helping your team, they think it's being able to 1v15 the entire enemy team because they saw some dipstick on NISLT do it (nevermind the fact they were being pocketed the entire match)TF2's short TTK and reliance on aim/movement dissuades a lot of kiddies who think they can spam an "I Win" button and get a multikill dopamine shot. They're a lot less likely to stick around when they're being dominated (""mean spirited"" mechanic btw) by five people who can aim and don't move in a straight line.
>>732441202Good players are usually stacked against a team of all noobs and the results are disastrous. 24/7 2fort is the only real option for new players to try learning the game
>>732441358Are they having a different experience in Overwatch or whatever it is that kids play these days?
>>732441783Bot matches and skill-based matchmaking give them just enough pity wins to stay hooked on their treadmill. I swear hero shooters/BRs have that shit down to an algorithm. They know exactly when lil' Timmy starts to get frustrated and hand him a piss-easy match so he can keep buying skins/battlepasses
>>732442245>Bot matchesBig part of Overwatch for me used to be socializing with random people in voice chat. Everything has just felt dead for a long time. The SR system of competitive also feels fucked up like it's almost impossible to climb from lower ranks and stuff.Matchmaking systems feel like dead internet theory to me now imo. Do you really think they're just feeding people bots at this point?
>>732443123Absolutely. It's rare, but they don't even try to hide it. It's barely noticeable to most players because they all have "social anxiety" or are afraid to have their account deleted because they said something mean on voice chat, so real matches are as dead silent as bot matches.
>>732440790TF2 is insainsly hard compared to other shooters but everyone wants to act like its le wacky casual gameHigh time to kill, and damage fall off, hit or miss weapons, and all the class unique stuff means a cod/battlefield kiddy is going to have a very painful time getting no kills and just getting killed over and over and not really understanding what is going on
>>732439937end of the day it's click heads on similar symmetrical mapsand when i think new players i think zoomers; yes you get stomped by premades - but your timing will always be leagues better
TF2 only seems hard if you don't have a confighttps://comfig.app/app/
>>732439937>interp spiesYou've never played spy if you think this actually works.
>>732444802Ohh, pardon me. I see they removed the ability to edit interp mid-match now.
>>732445578>now
>>732441491I am the nolife pubstar getting slotted into the team of noobs to force them to win.
>>732441202because dedicated players cashed out and moved on because playing 11v6 upward matches isnt fun?
>>732439937As long as it receives a new influx of players (which it does, I've met underage zoomers playing the game) then there won't be enough vets to dominate the other team, and they can learn the game and get their head around it. And then you have 24/7 team deathmatch on ctf maps which acts as a good tutorial for the game. The skill ceiling is fairly well balanced too, only the oldest and crustiest of veterans bother with the trolldier/sticky spam and they're usually countered by other vets outside of 2fort anyway.
>>732438589I started playing again last year, and thankfully I've found that I'm still as good as when I quit in 2013, and also that people are still equally retarded and easy to tilt.
BRING BACK QUICKPLAYNOW
but what's the main mode? what am I supposed to be playing?
>>732449160capture the flag is the only mode worth playing
>>732449160PL > AD = KOTH > 5CP >>>>>> CTF
>>7324491602fort 24/7
>>732449428>>732449160play 2fort until you are bored then play other gamemodes and maps for a bit and then go back to 2fort.
>>732439937>pro divebomber soldier/medic, spastic MGE scouts, and min-maxed interp spiesi have no idea what this means, been playing on and off since tf2 beta
>>732444345I thought this would give me access to special configs but all of these you can set up in-game in 3 minutes. What's the point?
>>732439937>TF2 is a pretty cool study of what FPS multiplayer games might evolve into if none of their servers ever went down: overtuned veteran players who can only find challenge against their equals, essentially barring newbies because they don't have 10+ years of gamesense.TF2 is most certainly not a study on that, but plenty of MP games die because toxic autistic veterans take over the balancing, making it supremely unfun for everyone else. For example Natural Selection 2. TF2 is way more casual because of mechanics like random crits and meme weapons.
>launch game>connect to approved 4chan community server>select pyro>W+M1Simple as>t. playing since 2007
>>732449604>divebomber soldier medicdivebombing is a super basic soldier strat. Rocket jump over a target, shoot rockets, damage fall off won't be an issue because you're gonna be landing close to your target as you fall>MGE scoutsjust scouts that have played a lot of 1v1 deathmatches on servers meant for that. Comp tryhards who pubstomp>min maxed interp spiesthis is for the real autismos. Interp is a command that sets how much rollback there is. So you can confuse the server by changing it, which can make backstabs easier and fuckier.Minmax in this case would be using spy's best loadout; kunai, dead ringer and diamondback.Kunai overheals to 200, deadringer gives speed boost and retarded damage resistance on a fake death, and diamondback is free crits.
>>732441358>when they're being dominated (""mean spirited"" mechanic btw)Taunts are another 'toxic' mechanic, yet it's a natural evolution from teabagging. Taking player interaction and emotional investment out of the game doesn't make it more likable.
>>732449742>60 tick instead of 20>Removes 100ms of lag>Bloom that isn't eyerape>Null movement>Higher texture quality than you can set ingame
>>732450039ah makes sense. i've also seen the demoman flying in videos, really confused about all that, i mostly just use 2007-2009 weapons
when did /v/ stop pretending to care about TF2's artstyle and cosmetics?
>interp spiesbad player copehigher interp makes spy harder unless you have hacks
>>732441783Overwatch doesn't have domination system for a start. And if the goal is "aim-relaxed hero I can play" you frankly have a far better choice to work with than in TF2.
>>732450429when did you start thinking that you are a woman?
i'm actually having fun
>>732438589It was more fun in the early 2010s
>>732449021it won't happen
>>732450125Taunts are just "emotes" under a different name. Hell they even shifted from being about actually taunting anyone with the introduction of stuff like high fives, rps and the viral conga/dance ones. Even at release they were more about showing the personality of the classes.
>>732450429Modern tf2 community is filled far too much with people who didn't start playing until after over the top cosmetics had become the norm for the game. They don't feel disdain for seeing how the game changed because they never saw it change in the first place.
>>732451335I may not be wasting my money after all!
>>732439937nah there's definitely low skill classes that still do wellEngiPyroHeavySniper Just apply knowledge from other pvp games and you should do somehow relatively well
>>732451335Hold that dear because it looks like that playerbase will soon dip below 2000 players
>>732449287ctfGOD, I kneel.
>>732452459There's a reason Engineer is the most-picked noob class. He's the only merc with what can be considered "abilities"
>>732439937>spastic MGE scoutsScouts are easy preys even for scrubs and noobs.
>>732452459It's too easy to get raped as Heavy, unless you have a Medic stapled to your ass.
>>732452601Scouts are literally regarded as the best 1v1 class in the game. A skilled scout player is not dying easily because they can just bail on any bad situation for them.
>>732451335just played this for twenty mins and it sucks ass.>little map variety>new weapons are either abysmal dogshit or insanely busted>servers are either dead are completely full>barely any american servers
>>732452459>engirequires a lot of gamesense or just general knowledge of how the game works>pyrow+m1 just gets you killed, before you say scorch shot remember new players won't have it>heavyAs the other anon says you need a medic>sniperlol are you kidding? even if the player has experience as a sniper it's going to be in shooters where people are much slowerI actually think your best bet is going demoman on defense and completely shamelessly just riging doorways with stickies and right click over and over. It's how I first started getting kills when I played back in 2007. I've seen plenty of people these days say they find the game impossible to get into due to how good players have gotten.
>>732453110i can find plenty of serversquit being a disingenuous faggot and a tryhard
I played 6000 hours of this game but stopped 10 years ago
>>732455080cool story, unc
>>732455190What the fuck is a unc
>>732452654>>732453364>you need a medicNo-medic Heavy is basically a sub class. With a medic, you're generally the main force behind your team's pushes. Without a medic, you ambush enemies in the flanks and pull out when things get dicey. I play it like fat scout with stock minigun and banana.
>>732458003Yeah you can play him that way but he ceases to be the easy mode that the anon was suggesting.
>>732455954zoomer word for millenialsi have a 14 year old son
>>732451335Fat scout is really powerful in this
>>732438589i love how they nerfed every weapon so stock guns are the only usable thing on everything except heavy and spy.
>>732458692this but unironically
>>732441358>being dominated (""mean spirited"" mechanic btw)Maybe a little, sure but I think it's supposed to give you a moment to reflect on why someone's shitting on you. It could be as simple as your nemesis just getting lucky enough times but "there's always a bigger fish" is a fact of life. The mercs are constantly insulting and murdering each other in game and over stupid bullshit in lore. There's dozens of taunts in the shop and many of them are designed to make fun of your death in the kill cam. The whole game is pretty mean spirited but it's all in good fun.
>>732450021>connect to approved 4chan community serverWhich ones would those be
>>732455954It's ebonics for "uncle" which was recently adopted by twitch zoomers who listen to rap music and think they're black
>>732459221it's to make fun of guys who get called "uncle" all the time because they don't have any kids. So they never get called "dad" like the normies in their (millennial) generation did, always just "uncle x"
hackers everywhere that will RCE your pcmods up the assi saw that even launching the exe will put you at extreme risk so wth do you even do at that point
>>732449742Less fiddling required than optimizing everything manually.
>>732452601Top top top TOP skill scouts will even kill good revved up heavies with natasha that know where they're coming from without taking damage. It's magicHigh comp skill lvl players are a rare sight though. Most players from 20-5k hours playtime fall in a skill range where every now and then they're killed by noobs or their team loses.Skilled snipers are the most common and make pubs unplayableSkilled demos will dominate everyone on the other team if the map doesnt change firstThe other classes you can deal with if you play carefully as they have limitations and counters
>>732439937People dont like playing it because it had eight years of either matchmaking with bots or you had to suck some ecelebs dick to play by their rules on their server. Any post that tries to ignore eight years of bots is missing a big point.>but theyre gone nowThe only thing a new player has heard for almost a decade is the game is unplayable since every match has cheaters.
>>732459564Yet (((Activision))) still has the nerve to charge $20 for his hacked 17 year old game
>>732439937people have been saying this about quake for 20 years too
>>732438589Overwatch 1 is the objectively correct answer.
>>732459871Quake champions has 150 people playing right now and quake has 100 so maybe those people are right.
>>732449160cp_powerhouse, pl_badwater, tc_hydro
just pick dustbowl, go soldier and shoot the ground where the enemy comes out and learn from watching your teammates until you figure out whats going on.
>>732443461Yeah my overwatch account got permabanned. Which is whatever but I dont even get a explanation why, my guess is that I was on a pretty good win streak with torb. Maybe I just got mass reported for that lol.
>>732458562unff
>>732451335SameA serverbrowser makes for balanced self regulating matchups. I might not play this forever, but I'm not installing regular tf2 again Tranq spy as team support puts the fear of god in people
>>732460008Aho in their right mind likes powerhouse and hydro
>>732453364w+m1 will absolutely get you kills if you flank. The pyro is designed with this as an option. Maps are designed to support it.
>>732438589why
>>732460551hydro sorta blows because of the trivial spycap potential, but there's literally nothing wrong with powerhouse
>>732460560Maybe with backburner or phlog. New players are having to try and do shit with the stock flamethrower.
>>732449160payload is objectively the best gamemode for tf2 and I won't hear otherwise
>>732464509It is but it's extremely painful if teams are stacked and you're on the losing side. It's like a 50/50 chance whether your team actually plays the objective or runs around like headless chickens thinking it's a free for all.
>>732440978CS is so fun but people take it way too seriously, everyone is just too good these days even in non-rankedI want to go back
>>732465817>extremely painfulcome on now Anon, you're a big guy
>>732438589this applies to every one in the genre
>>732438589I regularly top score on heavy and Ive been playing for less than a week. The problem is an information gap, not a skill gap. Imagine how the dead ringer looks in the eyes of a guy who has never played this game before
