How did minecraft go from a humble game prototype experiment in some swedish guy's basement to absolutely massive household name and highest selling game ever made?

I had sex with your mom, like a lot

Notch used to advertise cave game on /v/ in 2009.

"3d block grid you can build anything" is the sort of idea someone would inevitably come up with as soon as the technology allowed it.

Notch wasn't even the first, he just had more vision than Infiniminer.

because its a good video game with a solid premise: >>732456441

it spread organically via here, other online discussion forums, and word-of-mouth
it didn't give you a guide, you had to originally figure out all crafting either yourself or by talking to friends (and you could look up a wiki if you didn't want to enjoy that)
its bright, colorful, and kid friendly
its multiplayer

its also easily moddable which lets you make whatever ruleset you want

you should start a new world

neither was infiniminer

Kids own that shit on their Android tablet, their parents Iphone, and whatever console their parents bought them. Kind of inflates the sales.

Letsplay YouTube exploded at the same time as Minecraft
Compared to most of its contemporaries, Minecraft was very good letsplay content and so they fed into eachother throughout the early 2010s

see >>732458823 for further understanding along with yogscast (but adam was first in terms of making it popular and is the reason captainsparklez started as well)

seananners is essentially the reason minecraft took off on youtube initially and exposed the game to kids. He was also close friends with Captainsparklez and is the reason he started making Minecraft videos which exponentially increased minecraft's popularity on youtube and among children. Prior to him, Minecraft was essentially only known among video game and programmer autists, nerdy guys between 16-30. It was still popular but its ascension to what it is now started on Youtube and that started with Seananners.

There's a lot of cope but the reality is that notch had a really good business model of selling upwards of hundreds of copies of the game to be niggers on multiplayer servers.
I'm talking mobile tier whale ludicrious amounts of money dumped into alts.
To the point it made a whole grey market that made the game impossible to sell which why the whole migration thing happened.
It was stealing basically billions of dollars from retards by bricking their alt accounts.
>>
>>732465751
It started with davidangel64 but Seananners was right after and probably more popular.
Still his influence on captainsparklez is mostly the biggest deal.
>>732459703
I played gmod at the time and the game got completely fucking flooded with retarded kids right after he started making his gmod videos. dumbasses existed on there before but it was x100 because of him and I legitimately quit the game over it.

the children yearn for the mines, unironically

this has nothing to do with why its a household name
it explains money but not why its a cultural phenomenon

What other game was like it?
You create a world, and in one minute, you're ready to do whatever. Build, explore, farm, you name it. It's all on you. It doesn't take long to jump in the game. You can modify the world how you want, too. At the time in 2009, there was no other game like it. Right place, right time.
>>
>>732466959
It was literally a ripoff of a pre-existing indie project
Its insane popularity now clearly came from children watching it on youtube and getting obsessed with it, and things snowballing from there. It would have found great success no matter what given what you describe (even though it wasn't the first), but its the greatest selling game of all time and it didn't accomplish that by being novel (by the time kids bandwagon-ed onto it there were endless clones of it anyways).

Correct. And the gameplay scratches the itch of humans to find out, ie. how much they could do, how far they could go, etc. I call this the cave diver/space explorer excitement.

Long ago I posted this:
>Sometimes I watch videos of people going into caves or diving into underwater caves, and some of them end up tragically. I think dungeon crawling scratches this itch of humans, to take a peek at the unknown, to test one's limits, and go over the horizon and break their limits.

https://arch.b4k.dev/v/thread/693953251/#693956720

And later I would find this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_900EwYcZ5s

And we had the same realization/observation/analysis about the hidden psychology, nay, it's empathology of games.

>A new dungeon will be a blank slate so it's your job to start taking every branch you find and explore, filling out your map and familiarizing yourself with the area. As you move further into dungeons, you'll find keys and activate shortcuts to a dungeon entrance. Pretend you're a diver, heading into a dungeon is like a cave dive. HP is your current oxygen and MP is like your reserve tanks. As your air depletes, that is, your HP runs low, you'll need to swap your current tank for a reserve tank, that is, use your MP to heal your characters. Eventually, even your reserve oxygen will hit critical levels. The scarcity of MP makes the decision to heal a much more carefully measure one. If you're an experienced or a risk-taking diver, you may push forward, hoping that the cave's exit is imminent. However, it might be more prudent to play it safe. If you've unlocked a few shortcuts, you've mapped out the area, maybe you should cut your losses and use a return spell, head back to town. There you can heal and save, and come back more prepared.

>New update will add romanceable cabin crew triplets to your intergalactic spaceship that will often come inside the cockpit.

I will now buy your game Naughty Dog.

It provided a truly brand new experience at the time, it was relaxing to progress, achieving something creative that you had to earn felt good, multiplayer was friendly and you could easily make life-long friends in the span of minutes, exploration was effortless yet continually fruitful.
Then beta 1.8 happened and 75% of the above was irreparably damaged.
Then Microsoft destroyed the remaining 25% to focus on squeezing as much money out of it as possible.

The adventure update should have been a separate game or an expansion instead, where they could have actually focused on and fleshed out the adventure aspect in one and left the cozy one to go down its own path.
Instead they chose to have the worst of both worlds by smashing two diametrically opposed motivations for playing the game into a game which is the worst of both worlds.

>>
>>732469569
Don't forget the original 1.8 at least seemed to be leaning more towards industrialization/automation influenced by modpacks at the time
Then Notch played Skyrim
Pretty much all of 1.8 came from Skyrim hype kek it was actually infuriating to see unfold. Notch starts tweeting about Skyrim, suddenly there's potions, enchanting, dragons, and all the other ill-fitting tweaks made in and around beta 1.8.

It was planned and talked about a few months before Skyrim came out but he was really into it on release and beta 1.9/1.0 came out a handful of months after Skyrim so maybe he was hyped up right before release or something. It could have just been a coincidence but all of beta 1.8-1.0 does feel like he was just really into fantasy RPGs at the time and completely forgot what game he was working on
>>
>>732473831
oh shit i for some reason thought ender dragon and all of that shit was beta 1.8
its all a blur at this point but yea i guess it was 1.8 and then 1.0 where it all came together
