As a non developer i was shocked to learn that the hotspot texturing, kinda obvious system in retrospect, was only recently developed by valve, there were similar solutions - trimsheets as concept, but not the whole package.I kinda want to compare it to nanites in ue5. but nanites is a harder system to develop.Dividing meshes into meshlets was a thing before nanite, assassin's creed unity had meshes like that (but they divided meshes by hand) and new graphics apis and modern gpus do work with meshlets. but only epic build a custom tool that will automatically divide meshes into meshlet, making using meshlets several times easier, they also made a custom nanite renderer, but as i understand it mostly solved the issue of old gpus that can't render meshlets natively.
