Using guides are only really justifiable in competitive contexts like multiplayer or scoring in arcade-style games. In singleplayer games they should be treated the same way as story spoilers.Over using them does seem to induce a type of brain damage. People will insist that such and such game is a "wiki game" because there are a lot of mechanics that aren't spelled out to you in-game but really if the mechanic had any important effect on gameplay you'd notice.
