Using a guide or any outside information you yourself didn't obtain from your own in game experience while playing is cheating, you might as well just be playing on easy
Asking a friend or someone online for tips is less egregious but is also cheating as well

Nothing wrong with that by the way, play whatever difficulty you like
But don't pretend as if you didn't cheat and take the easy way out

Most people haven't beaten a single souls game without cheating, minecraft, terraria, factorio etc.

FF1 had a guide in the manual that you were supposed to read which brought up to around the halfway point of the game.
I did not know this when I played it (on emulator) and got super stuck for like four hours. I felt like a massive retard but when I found out that the original release had a literal walkthrough attached to it that included the part I got stuck on, I felt pretty relieved.

>Out of curiosity though, where did you get stuck on FF1? I remember that game being pretty linear
It is pretty linear, this was the only part that tripped me up.
After you get the floater, one of the elves in Elfland apparently has *new dialogue* telling you that you should use it in the desert. I could tell I needed the airship to progress but I had no idea where to use the floater, and I swear I talked to 80% of the other NPCs in the game trying to find any kind of hint.
According to google, all English releases after the NES version made it a bit more clear that you were supposed to go back and talk to the elves later. So there's that, at least.

and yet, there has been a culture of deliberately obfuscating information especially in japan so that you buy their endorsed guide which contains the information or get into the spirit of crowdsourced wikis
games like these include:
>adventures to go, epic 7, outerplane, god eater, code vein, dungeon travelers 2, phantasy star, pokemon, moe chronicle/crystal
doesn't include specific skill/elemental weakness multipliers and drop tables and level up tables and nature effects and combinations and mechanic explanation and would be trial and error otherwise
>many open world games
expect you to climb every spot of the map because the poor map designers worked hard on it, which can be breezed through with pins, doesn't want you optimizing routes for a shit timewaster
>mapless games like mimana iyar chronicles
expect you to draw your own map
>puzzles in games
expect you to solve obtuse puzzles that are sometimes cultural dependent, you would think games would remember about hint systems
>missables
expect you to play the game multiple times and comb every inch for chests and unlockable, miss a specific timeframe window to obtain or do something e.g. rune factory 4, stella glow, final fantasy tactics advance, phantasy star portable, golden sun and it gets annoying
>tldr
theres always a case for everything including using guides

do you like 90s bishie boys? because it's one of the top shows for that, ever
other than that, it's Gundam, so you know you're in for military drama, angst, and 49 episodes worth of model robots aura farming for the sake of being a toy commercial. Wing is a bit meandering and melodramatic even by Gundam standards. But of course, there are people who like that kind of thing, so if you do, then check it out.
Heero does not stop doing crazy shit like the famous scene in the first episode, making him one of the more entertaining Gundam protagonists.

Many of many favorite things aren't that great if you look at them from an objective standpoint. Hell, keeping with the mecha theme, the SRW games are undeniably pretty terrible overall as strategy games, but I'll keep playing every new release because the spectacle, crossover antics, and reanimated moments from shows are fun like the Gong event in Alpha or everyone collectively calling Jesus Yamato the biggest and most hypocritical faggot on the planet in Z.

depends
if the game gives you a tracking method to find them in a reasonable amount of time then it's lame, but if it's something like the gold skulltulas in oot then fuck that shit I'm using a guide

Sumisawa who was the head writer left halfway through production which is why zechs decided he wanted to be a char clone out of nowhere and the whole last half becomes a discount version of CCA.

I don't think this is very common nowadays. Games are a lot easier and way more intuitive now than in the past.

Holy shit, everything involving Zechs after the whole backstabbing from the Earth federation is a shitshow, hell, not even killing him would have redeem him, and Treize dying because that Retard wufei went full retard was peak stupidity.

Just look at DQ7 Reimagined, I gave it a replay to the 3DS version while waiting for the launch and heavens... that game is handhold over handhold.

I spent a time where I fell into the trap of convenience of looking up guides for everything. It was based on some irrational urge that I might miss something or make a mistake that would negatively affect my playthrough. But looking up guides for a game I havnt even started yet wasnt fun. Having all the discovery and mystery drained from an experience wasnt fun. Letting some pervasive form of FOMO take over my leisure activity poisoned the entire experience, and when I finally made a conscious effort to make peace with not experiencing everything in a perfect playthrough the first time it was like taking a blindfold off. I think the breaking point came when I first played the Talos Principle and I caught myself mindlessly going through a guide for the early puzzles. The whole fucking point is the puzzles why even play it at all if Im just going to spoil it for myself. These days I'll only look up guides or wikis on a boss or something if Iv beaten it blind first, and some games are just unintentionally obtuse so looking up a guide feels warranted but giving the game a fair chance first is more important than minimaxing my time for something Im supposed to be doing for fun.

I'm fine with people using guides because whatever it's their experience they're ruining but I have a friend that clearly uses a guide for literally every single video game he plays and pretends that he doesn't. I don't get it
>>
>>732475416
I do that if the game has some insufferable time wasting section like some of the mini-games in Final Fantasy X.
I like myself a good challenge but if the thing is just tedium in a game I'm otherwise enjoying then I will cheese my way through it.

Using a guide in a game? Hmph. If you must rely on one, then you’ve already lost the battle of wills against the designer. A true warrior confronts the unknown with nothing but instinct and resolve. But… if the game itself is flawed—if the path is obscured not by challenge, but by poor design—then consulting a guide is not surrender. It is strategy. One does not die for a pointless cause. Use the guide, but only to preserve your honor in a war worth fighting.

I actually got that sword without looking it up cause I thought I was being a sneaky fucker and was gonna be able to actually kill the dragon by cheesing it from there with 10,000 arrows. The dragon fucking off and getting a special sword for the effort was a really cool moment, I fucking love when you think you're doing something cheeky that the devs didn't expect and the game turns around and rewards you for it with a little wink

Using guides are only really justifiable in competitive contexts like multiplayer or scoring in arcade-style games. In singleplayer games they should be treated the same way as story spoilers.
Over using them does seem to induce a type of brain damage. People will insist that such and such game is a "wiki game" because there are a lot of mechanics that aren't spelled out to you in-game but really if the mechanic had any important effect on gameplay you'd notice. Or they expose mechanics that are supposed to be mysterious, i.e. like any hidden luck stat in RPGs (it's fucking luck, just like IRL it is unclear whether it exists or not)
