Box controllers are pretty popular in melee but they had to nerf them via firmware to prevent inputs that are physically impossible on a traditional gamecube controller. They're still really good but very few top players actually use them, and I don't believe anyone's ever won a supermajor with one. I think it's mainly a pride thing and tradition-based. Box players are kinda looked down on for the most part, and most of the top players have been using a gamecube controller for far longer than box controllers have been around so they're used to the gamecube controllers.

I genuinely believe if this game just copied melee it would be 5x more popular than it is right now and everyone would be happy. You don't like admitting this is true, but it is for the best that games are hard to master, not easy. Trying to make games easier to get people to play them just leads to a game that doesn't have a lot of competition because it doesn't rake in competitors (it rakes in scrubs instead) and a game that feels a lot less satisfying to play as a result.

I feel like this would be a more valid argument if the top 8s for RoA2 weren't extremely consistent. When I watch US tournaments, I see the same players consistently top 8. In fact, the inverse of what you're describing ends up happening, because gimmicky players like Zeebee (the king of Kragg gimmicks), Cheesypotato (diet Zeebee), and Sophilo (carried by pre-nerf Zetterburn) always get better player'd out of bracket before top 8. Meanwhile, more rounded players representing these characters (Ion for Kragg, Beastly for Zetterburn) end up placing well.

Anyway, the game shouldn't copy Melee, nor does it. It has ledges, shields, and grabs, but all of these function differently than they do in Melee or any other platform fighter with them. You cannot appease Melee players. They just want to play Melee. Even if you made a game that was identical to Melee but with a balanced roster, they wouldn't play it because it isn't Melee. You might think I'm being harsh, but it's true. Melee is Melee because of its flaws, and because those flaws have been adapted to for 20+ years. They are an integral part of the game that people simply accept.

No, BUT I will say that shader pre-caching is a significant improvement. I personally experience absolutely no issues with performance on either my desktop or laptop, so I don't know what's causing performance issues for other players.

I assume you're talking about balance, since the game really never had any significant issues with physics. The closest thing I can think of is issues related to the input buffer which were resolved.

I do think it is the most balanced platform fighter, and arguably the most balanced modern fighting game. I usually get really into it for a week or two at a time, and I rarely experience any annoyance beyond being rusty. I should really grind up to master one of these days.

It's going to take a while for good Workshop characters to come out. It's more work than it was in RoA1 and people are going to need to develop the necessary skill sets. The bright side is that a lot of it is in-engine (within UE5), which is very user-friendly, and everything more complicated than that is LUA, which is an easy scripting language.

On the other hand, stages and items will be pretty easy, so I'd almost expect to see those sooner than good characters.

Yeah, this is the mostly immediately obvious potential problem with Combo Devils for me. I like platform fighters because the defensive counterplay is so active compared to 2D fighters. I hope that I am completely wrong, though.

If they handle normal DI well enough, then it may not be a problem. The issue that Melee avoided due to meta not existing before patches is combos are organic rather than explored and designed around. What ends up happening is combos are made from the start and then as the meta refines, other stuff bubbles to the surface and you get very optimized setplay. Ultimate is a great example of this. Melee manages to still be jazz-esque despite a very, very mature meta and the most unpopular elements of Melee are those moments which are "set" in stone (ICs, a lot of the chaingrabs, etc). Also worth noting that SDI is important counterplay to otherwise very strong combo options such as drillshines. We will see how it goes, but to me it reeks of devs having too strong of a hand on what they envision characters to be able or not able to do.

Oh, well in that case his recovery is better, although i do think that the average player doesn't contest it as much as they should. He's one of those characters you just can't let get to the wall, because he's very good of playing off of it. He also escaped the diminishing return nerfs that hit other characters' recoveries, like Olympia's and Zetterburn's. I'm still waiting for it to happen to him too.

Yes but then you need to animate it, or limit yourself to characters from similar games that already have the animations. A lot of what made Rivals 1's workshop so great was that 2D sprite animation is a lot easier to get into than 3D modelling and 3D animation which resulted in a lot of original characters, or at least characters using original sprites and animations. I doubt we're gonna see a faithful rendition of dark donald anytime soon.

I like Rivals 1, but I think the casual stage list is kind of lame even with Aether variations. There's some fun gimmicks behind them, but they don't have the variety of layouts/scale Smash stages tend to have. If they're going to add casual stages, they need their own casual kino like a Hyrule Temple/Corneria equivalent that's real fun for free for alls or more casually oriented doubles.
