Big Catch Tacklebox was also on the same level as that. It's really cool that two different devs made 3D platformers that were that high quality. Extremely impressive games. Balatro was also lots of fun, I played it so much I even got the Completionist++ achievement. The Bazaar is a great autobattler, had a great time playing that. Backpack Battles is an even better autobattler, that one was also lots of fun. The format really distills the build-management gameplay that's tertiary gameplay in lots of games and makes it the core experience.

I think the metroidvania structure works very well with platforming being the thing that gates progression. Genuinely had an awesome time the entire time. I had a different experience to many people though, in that I didn't find the wallride right up until the end of the game, I collected everything else and did everything else before getting it. Which means I did a lot of the challenges you're supposed to use the wallride for with all the other tools. I think it might have been a particularly good way to play the game, each platforming challenge was more of a puzzle instead of being trivialized by the wallrun.

There's an element of appeal in the chaos, but I feel like there's a lot of people getting into shmups lately, and they don't really understand what it's like to grind a hard game where you can get dinged by absolute bullshit. And you've got people saying you shouldn't route shmups and then praising crimzon clover when TAC says he loves routing and analyzing other people's replays. I personally find garegga a little frustrating because I'll be zipping around with Gain and bombing shit and gobbling up medals, and suddenly my rank will be out of control in stage 5, like i feel everything i do has a huge ripple effect and like i have to think "maybe i need to not get options yet, or maybe i have to milk this boss and then suicide", but with DOJ you don't get that, you can incrementally build up your chains bigger and bigger and combo them into bees, and the game is designed to let you approach it like that, and its clearly a very technical route heavy game, but theres a lot of ways to approach it. So for Garegga my thoughts on that aren't clear yet and they won't be until I get a route I'm comfortable with and feel I've got a good grasp on the game, and i dont want to say if its good or bad until i do that. It's just odd to see what some people come up with.
