>there's no fucking way its-
Oh it actually is, wow. I remember the only way of getting this to work back in the day was to mess around with a RPGmaker .exe you'd download off some shady site because the whole thing was in nipponese. How times change.

tragic what happened to the 3d version of the game; that showed me pretty early on in life how fetid fanbases can and will be
>>

A comment that cryptic usually comes with a story.
>>
>>732618543
I feel like it's pretty straightforward, it's supposed to be anyway.
The 3d game yume nikki: dream diary released in a sort early access state and was supposed to receive periodic updates but it's development had to end prematurely because the rabid fanbase couldn't stop screeching about how it wasn't like the 2d game.
>>
>>732618747
I skipped it because it looked kinda generic. Are there many secrets like the original game? Is it worth a play?
>>
>>732618917
I can't tell you the details since I played it 5+ years ago but I can tell you that the music is stellar and the art direction and atmosphere has many great moments that I still remember vividly.
It's janky but overall I loved the game and the fact that I still remember a good chunk of it is proof of that to me.

They don't necessarily have to, but I agree. There's a very deliberate sort of madness to Kikiyama's art direction that very few have been able to match.
>>
>>732619267
They don't need to capture it, they can transmit their own vibe just like .flow, LcdDem and early 2kki.

>Got into Yume Nikki in 2010
>Never went on 4chan because I was a baby teen who avoided any site that had a reputation for viruses
>Never discussed the game anywhere else either because of a chronic desire to not be seen or known back then, even online
>"you kinda had to be there to get it"
Is it weird to say I both was and wasn't there? I still regret not trying to engage with any circles actually talking about it.
>>
What got me to actually sit down and play Yume Nikki was when Mish Koz said that it’s an entire game that feels like what the last hour of Earthbound feels like. If that description entices you, go play it, but be sure to get some kind of spoiler-free walkthrough or guide to all the sightseeing stuff, because you can start bouncing and hitting walls very quickly if you don’t know where to go and you will never trigger the game’s most interesting events by accident. Also remember to play the objective and actually try to collect the effects.
>>
>>732621116
How did you escape it? I still avoid online social interactions at all costs and dunno how or where to talk to people
>>
I find this game really hard to play. Something about it puts me on edge. Maybe I'm a fucking pussy.
>>
>>732621714
I never truly escaped it. I had a phase where I was a lot more sociable, and I have good friends because of it, but I still have long bouts where I just don't talk to them, despite them messaging me near daily with no response. I wish I could say there was more to it than being lucky and finding some extroverted people who you can actually get along with that won't give up on you just because you don't feel like talking sometimes, but it really does just come down to following your whims and trying to chat with strangers. It doesn't help that social interaction online is the worst it's ever been. The Tumblr era of social media really was the final decent chance anyone had of forming sincere bonds with strangers.

Yume Nikki 3d was good for what it was
It was definitely different but it did capture the feeling of the original in novel ways
But given Kikiyama is dead, there will always be criticism about any kind of addition or deviation
Someone who should be beheaded is the literal jew who was trying to """make""" yume nikki PS(X) as that is an abomination
>>
Whatever happened to that Yume Nikki 4chan project people wanted to do?
>>
Been prototyping a HL1 mod in a similar vein to YK, too bad my crippling procrastination and work schedule means all I've gotten done is a basic zoo map and some of the planned gameplay elements, which was mostly implementing inventory items (mostly related to map specific puzzles) and the interactable prompts (pick up, use, open/close, talk, etc.)
Kind of wish I could NEET it up like I did when I was off work for a while due to injury the other year so I could no-life working on it.

As a man who played earthbound like a year ago and who played yume nikki more than a decade ago and repeatedly, that is extremely subject to your own internal understanding of how either plays out
Very little about yume nikki is guided and presents any kind of feeling beyond what the score is capable of due to the fact that there is no story beyond what you are "dreaming" up yourself in response to the events
You may have a depthy and imaginative internal world, but the game barely begets anything on its own

>There's a very deliberate sort of madness to Kikiyama's art direction that very few have been able to match
Which few would those be? None have managed to do that for me personally, but the closest I think any game has gotten was Neftelia, though that may just be because of how much more vague it is. It's easier to project the things you want onto something when it leaves nearly everything up to your interpretations.
>>
>>732623480
Absolutely, I just need to yknow, actually get stuff done.
Didn't want to get too in the sticks scratchpad'ing out bits of levels and making assets until I made the actual game parts, so I have nothing but one boring grey box for testing gameplay features.

Not a Yumelike, but Black Souls 2 felt more like a "successor" to Yume Nikki than most any other RPGMaker project.

>>
>>732626587
I have yet to play Black Souls 2, but if it's anything like BS1 then that comparison might be very apt. In a weird way, despite it being a turn-based inspired version of Dark Souls, that translation into 2D makes Dark Souls closer to Yume Nikki than you'd expect.
>>
>>732626587
I would say Omori's black space segment is a great sucessor to Yume Nikki
>>
>>732627437
Omori was supposed to be a Yume-like btw
>>
I don't think it's particularly deep or anything, it's just cool in a zen, dreamlike sort of way. There's just enough of a goal to say you aren't walking around for no reason, but whether it's the art direction, music loops, event flags or the effects, I'd say the main appeal is the holistic sense of feeling like you're wandering through dreamscapes.
>>
>>732628486
This. It's what made Yume 2kki a great successor, until it became a steaming pile of shit.
>>
>>732615857

I know Yume Nikki is more of a "embrace the vibes exploring" game than a "beat the game" game, but I will never not be pissed off that when playing the game blind I found the first 23 effects in about 10 hours, and then spent the next 15 walking in circles looking for the last one. You know which one I was missing? Fucking Long Hair. I had made the (reasonable) assumption that there wouldn't be two effects in the game room (since that's how it works for the rest of the game), and in my notes I already marked the Mural World as having been completely explored. The NPC that gives you the effect moves around, so even though I had seen every tile in the rooms multiple times, I either never bumped into it or didn't notice it wasn't the same NPC as the one that gives you the Blonde effect. I ended up giving up searching and just looking it up. Ruined the game for me.
