Anyone else giving up on digital media? I've decided to start investing in physical media whenever I can. It was just bothering me that the last 10 years or so of this hobby has resulted in me owning virtually nothing, no games, all digital files. Just digital rentals locked to estores and digital storefronts like Steam and GoG. I think I'm going back to carts and discs while they last. Fuck digital.

Giving up on social and digital media is probably one of the best outcomes for people nowadays.
Think about it, you're being fed bullshit now more than ever before.
The chances you're arguing with an online bot automated to shill billionaire talking points is high.
Don't waste your fucking time. Do yourself a favor, right?

I remember a week ago I tried to get a used copy of windwaker from Ebay. Instead what I got was a brutally scratched disc with fucking toothpaste smeared all over it. I checked back and sure enough I am pretty sure the seller posted a picture of a different game for the back shot.
Anyways so yeah I still have my wii and pkay it regularly.

Because you are not conferred the same abilities as a physical copy, namely being able to sell it, being able to buy it from someone, being able to run it on an unmodified system, and being able to play it without being banned on a modified system.
The only way you can buy and sell it is if you do it illegally and the market for that is extremely small by comparison and if you can do it that easily so can they.
The only way it works on an unmodified system is if it's a Dreamcast or you somehow gained access to the way all the factories encrypt the copies which would make your copy functionally identical to a retail one barring the official labeling and boxes.
The only way you don't get banned on a modified system for playing that game is if you obfuscate both your system and the game.

Sure, you can buy the 50,000 copies of Pokemon Emerald for AliExpress for $.20 a piece, but the only people who are going to buy them are people who either don't care they're getting scammed or people who do care they're getting scammed and call you out on it because they're not the original release.

>why did people think smearing shit all over scratched discs would help?

It does work for minor scratches. The abrasive of the toothpaste helps sand down the scratch. Remember, the data isn't on the surface of the disc, it's underneath, the scratch isn't on the data, but it's fucking up the ability to read it (for the light to shine through the surface).

Nioh 2 Complete Edition comes as part of a dual pack that is almost always $20 if you were talking about the PS5 version. The PS4 version was only physically released in Japan so you need to import it which is why it's regularly $50+, but the Nioh 1 + 2 CE on console is almost always $20. Here's when I bought it a few months back.

If you buy carts and discs, then you're still buying digital files, they're just on a cheapo storage medium.

Because the world around us is changing to be mostly digital, and people need to justify their switch from physical to digital by trying to convince other people that its a good thing.

Truth is, digital is more convienient. These people can't just say that though because people who collect physical dont mind having to go outside and try to get games for cheap by leaving their house. So they come up with all of these edge-cases and what-ifs that fall flat.

In reality, digital gamers think they're trying to convince other people that digital is a good thing, when in reality they're trying to convince themselves in a world thats changing too quick.

Good idea. I have a ton of physical games for my physical consoles because I gave up on modern gaming about a decade ago and started building my retro collection. Just pirate games anyway, that's what I do with all my retro stuff that I don't own physically. Most games worth a shit the last decade have been from indie or other small studios and can be easily pirated. Have a large hard drive and a toaster and you can play tons of retro games, and even mid tier rigs can play AAA slop from the last decade at low enough settings. Fuck giving any of those cunts your money

>people who collect physical dont mind having to go outside and try to get games for cheap by leaving their house.
This too. Going and finding some rare game or personal holy grail for cheap out in the wild can't be beat. All these dorks can instantly pay $150 for a copy of Einhander off eBay, I'll spend $2 and a couple hours walking around a flea market on the weekends. Won't always find something great, but there are still treasures out there if you're willing to look
