What's the point of the rebar being heated?
>>
extra fuck you
>>
So that it makes a cool noise when you reload.
>>
looks cool
>>
>>732772938
better piercing
>>
>>732772938
extra 5% fire damage against undead
>>
>>732772938
Penetration potential + causes Combiniggers and headcraps to suffer more
>>
If someone in close quarters tries to disarm you by grabbing it they'll go YEOWCHIE
>>
>>732772938
ghetto armor piercing incendiary or something. most importantly it looks cool
>>
>>732772938
to light up your cigar
>>
How does the rebar even get heated in the first place?
>>
>>732772938
to cauterize the wound ofc and make the rebar more painful to extract, it's some vietcong level of diabolical
>>
>>732774145
Battery circuit on the bottom, causes rebar to overheat with electrical energy
>>
>>732774145
with a battery
>>
>>732773908
heh, give em the ol spicy hand
>>
>>732774145
You see that box underneath? Thats a battery. I shouldnt need to explain any more than this
>>
>>732774346
>>732774382
>>732774423
There's no way the rebar could heat up as fast as it does in game.
>>
>>732774423
what is a box?
>>
>>732774278
>painful to extract
By who? This isnt an active warzone were killing aliens and making sure whatever we hit has its natural defences not mean SHIT
>>
>>732774473
It could with high enough voltage
>>
>>732774473
they have teleporters and gravity guns and your worry is that they might not have advanced heating tech?
>>
>>732774473
Because it's a video game.
>>
>>732774473
So. Just because youd probably explode IRL if you were anywhere near that powerful a current doesnt mean that isnt how it works.

wouldn't it instantly cauterize the wound and make it less effective since the target wouldn't bleed out?
>>
>>732772938
cool that it's even slightly hotter on the side closer to the charger
>>
>>732774627
The target would be fucking dead because it has rebar through 4 organs. And if it isnt dead its being shot again
>>
>>732774627
usually enemies hit by the crossbow are dead and attached to the nearest surface before they get a chance to bleed anywhere

Should it not be more symmetrical? I assume it works something like this
>>
>>732774823
then it wouldn't look as cool
>>
>>732773857
Your mom has a lot of penetration potential.
>>
The weaponry is one of the best parts of Half-Life 2's atmosphere desu. The way it's all improvised or looted from the invaders is really cool and looting enemy Combine or finding resistance supplies is a great way to introduce the player to new weapons
>>
Some dude on jewtube made the crossbow in real life and heating the rebar just makes it a piece of shit. It'll burn whatever it hits but the rebar ends up so soft that it can't penetrate anything even slightly hard because the force of impact just bends it instead. Plain rebar also isn't aerodynamic at all so it just immediately starts spinning out the second it leaves the crossbow.

unheated rebar with a sharpened tip and at least some attempt at fletching would make it way deadlier but it would still have a pretty shitty range.
>>
>>732774943
Strangely, I don't think we ever see a resistance member use the crossbow, even though it's the most ghetto weapon available
>>
>>732772938
it's red so it means it's faster and does extra damage
>>
>>732774823
I guess the power isn't that strong, so most of the energy gets absorbed to the part that is closer to current start point.
>>
>>732774627
having your heart or brain cauterized with a piece of rebar still in it is not going to save your life

not every shot is guaranteed to hit a vital organ

This is what has harmed the legacy of HL2 and why everyone prefers Black Mesa or HL1 over it now
>>
>>732773857
>>732773857
making something hotter (to a point) makes it less hard and thus decreases its penetration capability.
A rebar of that color of heat would be significantly softer and be significantly less penatrative.

t. works with hot metal (make knives)

>>
>>732775032
npc ai probably can't handle projectile weapons, so resistance members with crossbow would be extra useless. I'm sure devs could have implemented that, if that was important for gameplay and had time.

That amount of heat wouldn't just cauterize the wound, it would cook a significant amount of tissue throughout the body of whoever it hit while setting them on fire.

they sometimes heated cannonballs during the imperial age to set the target on fire, make it harder to remove and possibly ignite gunpowder supply.

the deflecting shots were pointless but still fun to do
>>
>>732774473
go put a piece of rebar across 12v battery terminals
>>
>>732776075
i only ever did bounce shots, made HL2DM super fun. i have no proof of this but it really felt like the bolt picked up a lot of speed after bouncing
>>
>>732772938
Using rebar as a crossbow bolt is absolutely ridiculous. Next time you're in a hardware store pick some up and feel how heavy it is. This thing is far more unrealistic than any of the alien technology in the game.
>>
>>732775414
Probably. There's resistance members that carry RPGs but they almost never fire their weapon because they have shittons of friendly fire checks that all have to pass before they can do anything
>>
>>732776929
But it's cool.
>>
>>732776929
if it used regular bolts, no one would remember it

Your electric oven is literally a rebar and a battery
>>
>>732772938
Because it glows and it's orange, which means it's enchanted with xen shit
>>
>>732774535
it's electric current that causes resistive (joule) heating
>>
>>732775062
the current is the same throughout the circuit, therefore the heating should be uniform, and blackbody radiation coming off the rebar should more or less be the same between the electrodes
>>
>>732775881
It needs metal rods that are the correct width i.e. rebar
But rebar doesn't usually come in such short pieces so you need proper tools to cut them, not just something Gordon can do with his hands
Also the rebar sticking out of rubble won't work because it's not straight anymore
>>
>>732779208
What exactly makes this stuff special anyway?
>>
>>732774473
Rebar shouldn't fly as straight as it does in game either but here we are.

>>
>>732779801
It reinforces concrete so it doesn't crumble like chinese ramen noodle walls
>>
HL2 overcharged is so much fun.
>>
>>732779801
it's standardized
you can look at the markings and know exactly what its specs are, intended use, material, grade, etc.
>>
>>732779801
rebar has those grooves so it flies perfectly straight without fletching

>>732780145

>>
>>732774473
it"s probably a high tech battery. IRL you'd need a car battery and it would also probably weld itself to the poles and not fire very well. hacksmith made one, although the bolts it shoots are considerably thinner, the battery is much larger and it takes a few seconds to heat up.
>>
Why cant modern devs make guns with this visceral of a result of hitting someone.
