Sick for a few days so I've got nothing
I'm working on undead people>>732951480shit sucks yggbro, hope you get better soon
Added character rotation on movement (but not when pushed), models that show movement direction, goblins that kill anything in 4 adjacent tiles, and a priest character that protects itself and anything in 4 adjacent tiles from death.
I've got nothing right now, maybe if the threads still up later tonight or tomorrow I'll post the level I'm working on>>732951480feel better dude
i'm gonna make a stacklands slop and watch the money roll in teehee
played some mewgenicssurprisingly few ideas that I felt the need to steal, that surely means my idea is cohesive enough as it is alreadytonight, working on a system to handle random events that player might stumble upon
Working on cutscenes, bug fixes, and some videos. One to show all the little changes I've made in response to feedback to the demo, for example, the little pulsing animation on the turn display to help catch the player's eye and remind them it's their turn. With how fast the game can blaze through enemy moves, I heard from a couple people that they'd just sit there for a few seconds before realizing "oh, it's my turn." Also going to make a bunch of shorts, each showing a playable character and what they bring to the party. I figured character bios might appeal to those who like SRPGs, those people do tend to like characters!
got our game up on the made in brazil sale on steam, hopefully it picks up some wishlists. currently working on the final area

Started to work on the first level and the progress ground to a halt, which was expected so it's not demoralizing me. I'm learning a whole new skill after all, just trying to figure out how to do it on Blender and choosing pentagon shaped floors for a space station didn't make it easier. >>732951480Get better soon bro>>732951569Will they be spooky or sad undead?

My game is for Valentina's eyes and her eyes only.
As you may or may not know, Dragoons now fly and breathe fire. At the moment, I am working on optimizing the scenes such that more enemies can be present without tanking the framerate.Unity's mysterious "Other" strikes again.

Still working on Ellie. I made a script for the ponytail, which was harder to do and plan out than I thought it would be. The ponytail is one object with only one rotation point at the base of the ponytail. I use clever rotation on all three axises combined with curvature of the object itself to make it seem like it's flowing.

Are the unity/unreal official tutorials any good? been learning rpgmaker slowly but kind of want to try my hand at the two big engines
>>732963361Unity's tutorials are hit and miss. They're good to help you get started, or if it's something new they recently added and you want to learn the basics, but anything beyond that and they leave much to be desired.Code Monkey is probably a better resource for Unity tutorials. No comment on UE. I use it a lot for work but I've never done anything game related in it.
Hopefully will finish today.

I got better at art and the style shifts kinda work now, but I'm fine tuning the display for the "testimony" portion of the game. The idea is that each testimony is a literal sketch in whoever is testifying's color, and that sketch gets more detailed/changes when the protagonist spots contradictions, intimidates the witness, etc.

>>732976747>>732976747Yup. I've been working on a roguelike based on the cambrian period for 3 weeks now, already have all the core systems done and all the skills I wanted to implement, next step is to add more enemies and improve their ai, then make the map generation more varied. Game engines allow you to iterate over concepts first. This even happens professionally. For example Sea of Thieves was prototyped in Unity before they decided that they had a good concept, swapped to Unreal and started to create art and refine it.(They still use Unity for prototyping current features)

>>733005271>Have been designing levels and made a mario 3 esque world map level select screenNow I'm interested, what game?
>>733003392I went to pose a screenshot to demonstrate the concept and realized my rig breaks catastrophically when the entire thing is rotated because the legs have a notion of "up" that doesn't care about which way the torso is facing and that's going to require some fixing.Anyway this hopefully illustrates why having the feet be "syringe-like" is kind of essential, it already gets very cluttered with this thing gripping the enemy (to be honest, I'm not entirely sure I'm going to have it ever ride around on a regular-sized enemy, it might only be carried by larger ones, but I think the issue still stands and I'd like to design it to work this way if game balance wants it).
>>733005385Lucid.3AM, its a gameboy (somewhat puzzle) platformer that ive been hacking away at for the past few weeks. Also sucks platformer plus plugin is just broken beyond repair with 4.2 so now im dabbling with the new platformer options to get a match with what I had originally. I have a simple gameplay loop of aping off a gameshow but giving the player the ability to skip and fastforward through the game show once the spectacle has worn off for the sake of making it an incremental cash farming game>play round>win cash through essentially clicking random boxes>round endsI have a shop in mind that when the player earns enough money will let you unlock other gameshow sets and host announcers. I don't want set #3 to give a higher payout than set #1 because I don't want the player to be inscentivised and rewarded for possibly picking their least favorite set, but nothing is stopping me from doing classic incrimental powerups as other ways to spend cash (payout multipliers, bonuses in a round), but how can I make the actual long haul goals of the game more rewarding? I'm hoping players will play enough to make it to the final set stage, perhaps I'll roll credits and call the game completed when you beat the last level (though I've not inteded to have set 1,2, etc mechanically differ at all, just cosmetically), but I'd like some recommendations or ideas on other ways to spend money or what could be added to raise the rewards so I can set up a blueprint of player progression beyond "playing X number of games"

>>733013962>Valve takes 30%This will never not piss me off.For the record, people have been tricked into thinking this is fair or reasonable when it isn't. Originally Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony took 30% (they set the 'industry standard') because you were publishing on their proprietary first-party console to include using their name, logos, storefront, dev tools, and assistance with PHYSICAL distribution. Physical logistics costs money because fuel, transportation, packaging, etc. It made some sense at the time. Then as we moved to everything being digital, the argument used to be "It will make games cheaper because less transportation and physical waste, yay!" yet no company followed thru with this promise. Eventually the 30% just stuck and Valve did it because "everyone else does it!" despite them always saying they aren't like console publishers or whatever slimy excuse they use.

Their release clause literally prevents any selling of games below Steam prices. Imagine going to a local grocery store and the eggs are $10 because Walmart said it can't be sold less than at their stores (despite the difference in logistics and operating costs). It's ridiculous and only serves to choke out competition. You literally can't sell your game on your own servers because Valve said no. Adding to this, unless a business decides to somehow give customers the ability to transfer all their Steam owned games to another platform for free they can not come close to competing. Steam has turned themselves into a monopoly over the years on PC and there is no way to compete. If steam raised their cuts to 50% no one would be able to stop them and players wouldn't care to lose their library.

>>733019093>Valve has literally locked out all competition to include self-hosting publishers. Their release clause literally prevents any selling of games below Steam prices. If you're self-hosting anyway, why bother going through Steam in the first place? >>733020223>If you're self-hosting anyway, why bother going through Steam in the first place? The same reason manufacturers and farmers place their goods on every retailer's shelves when possible. Being on more platforms/markets means maximum sales. >prevent devs from undercutting ValveThis would be somewhat true if it weren't for 2 things: Steam is the de-facto primary marketplace on PC, they are not a small market by any means and this affects self-hosting, so if a dev wants to offer a cheaper DRM-free copy or anything on their own they can not do it. It would be like Walmart protecting itself from small local businesses by strangling them

The cultists will refuse to buy your game if you don't put it on their favorite corporation's storefrontThat's not Steam's fault, is it?>>733020924>Being on more platforms/markets means maximum sales.Yup, but the price you pay is that you need to agree to those platform's terms.>Steam is the de-facto primary marketplace on PC, they are not a small marketSteam controls about 70-80% of the market, so you'd naturally have a better reach if you host your game there.>this affects self-hostingOnly in the sense that consumers have become so lazy that keeping a simple note with some web addresses is too much to ask.>so if a dev wants to offer a cheaper DRM-free copy or anything on their own they can not do itThey can, they just can't offer it for a lower price if they're using Steam keys to do it. If the devs want to make a DRM-free version that doesn't use any Steam services (keys, network, hosting, workshop, etc.), they can offer that at any price they want. You just can't undercut Valve while making use of their services. If anything, I'm baffled that Steam allows the selling of keys outside of its own platform, since they miss out on their 30% this way.

>>733026674>no no no, don't criticize Steam! What about these other companies?>no no no, don't criticize Apple! What about these other companies?>no no no...Great. Guess we're going nowhere. Also apparently you don't know what an "example" is. I advise you look it up.
>scope creep rapes my assholes>reduce scope to single re-usable feature>scope creep rapes my assholesHow do I escape this loop
>>733026252Figured it out. It is Filter>Render>Gfig. I hate doing the art. If I need to know how to do something in programming, the search engine will give reasonable result, AI can walk me through it step by step. I do it for art shit, AI hallucinates incredibly, there's 15 convoluted ways to do same thing in search engines.
>>733027626My solution? Plan to finish a game in 6 months so I can actually finish it in 3 years.
>>733027626Scope out a release, stick to scope. If you have a good idea, add it to backlog. I just use a markdown file to keep track of releases and backlog.

>>733027502I’m just pointing out the obvious insincerity. the 30% argument came from sweeney and just as a means to attack his competitor while on the record in court documents he’s paying shills to spread it. before that no one said a word about it or gave a fuck.
>>733027626whenever I get an idea for something I might wanna add, I'll write it down in a notebook.then once a week, I go through all of those ideas and come up with reasons why I shouldn't add it to my game and reasons why I should add it.9 times out of 10, I have more reasons why I shouldn't add them than why it should be implementedthe biggest thing was deciding on 100% what will be the core systems/functions for how the game works. if any new idea for a feature needs to change that core systems, then it's scrapped immediately. don't even give it second thought, it's gone and lives forever in the ideas notebook.then when I start a new project, I have a huge list of ideas and how they should work with my existing stuff. That way I can re-use scripts from previous projects, and anything new will be outlined right from the start.
>>733026771I think if your game movement is locked in you can calculate how fast you move per second, then animate with movement in blender, then remove the spatial movement keys.

>>733028451Does your game have any grapples?
>>733026771>Do they just eyeball it?Yes if it's an animator who based on animation experience can intuit what feels good. Non-animators will have to experimentYou animate the run cycle for the target frame rate of your game and then adjust the anim speed in-enginee.g. If you're making a scrimblo that's 60fps and want a 24 frame run cycle, you animate that at 60fps then in engine you increase/decrease the speed like if the player gets a speedup powerup
>>733028464You think he's giving 30%? Bro, he's sucking cock for free.
>>733028287I've been making assets since 2020 and no playable build since.
>>733028625not a grapple move, but you can grab enemies that downed and throw them around
>>733028287I'm 6 months away from release, after 2 years of development and I still don't have my gameplay loop finalized.
>>733028941Henry's come to see us!

>>733026106Disclose the use of AI, but completely ignore any attempts at getting you to talk about it.Just be stoic and don't engage.

>>733028941>I'm 6 months away from release>I still don't have my gameplay loop finalized. Then you're not 6 months away from release.
>>733029189oh! mmmh yeah could be cool, but sadly I'm already out of buttons lol. You can grab them which doesn't take a lot of time anyway, or execute them, but I'll think about the kick, maybe it could be "hold down the normal attack button to kick enemy". Thanks!
>>733029165I'm not the one using AI. There's just no avoiding shitposting if you do, and if not using it isn't an option, just be honest and stay above engaging detractors.Anything you say is just more fuel to shit on you for.Basic social media/bullying literacy my dear retard friend.
>>733029375Yeah, just thinking it could add some 'player expression variety' and a different type of hitbox you can mix in. It would also be visually satisfying.
>>733029226The assets are nearly done, I just need to make some fun gameplay with them.If I can't then I'll just have shit gameplay I guess, but I'm running out of money as I quit my job, so I'll release it come what may.
>>733028935Your nice effects made me realize how much I am lacking in terms of effects. How did you go about deciding what to add? look at what similar games do?
>>733029527yeah it could be cool to be able to thrown them around with a quick kick. No need for another hitbox since the already existing one is tied to the body bone so it rotates with the enemy so it wouldn't be that hard to implement. Biggest problem is the lack of free buttons but maybe I can come up with something that works. Could be holding down the normal attack button ir RB + X.
How hard is it to make a retro shooter? old school marathon, doom, even beyond citadel leveli dont know anything about code though
>>733030091to clarify, by 'different type of hitbox' I meant being able to hit things at different angles, like how different inputs in a fighting game give you options against different directions.
>>733029985Not him but look up particles.Weapon trails, impact effects and blood splatters are all pretty common and you can probably find tutorials for them for your engine of choice.
>>733029985you mean the particle effects? I had a look at Ocarina of Time and other games yeah. Sakurai also has a few videos on the subject with some nice tips:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcYDrtRvuKg&list=PLgKCjZ2WsVLS_VcVMrFF6eeiI_ER7c6a2>>733030160not sure I follow. You mean having different hitboxes for different parts of the body? I already have that, for example hobgoblins take more damage if you hit them in the head, forcing the player to use vertical attacks instead of more horizontal and wider ones which are usually better at crowd control
>>733030443I didn't literally mean hitbox, I just meant 'a new area of the screen/angle from the player the player can hit'

Blender people, is this tutorial not great, or is it a me problem? Maybe the model I'm using, which I downloaded. https://www.instructables.com/Blender-Basic-Rigging-Process/Around the end of Step 4, I'm not seeing any arrows. The bone also looks way bigger relative to the image I see.

>>733041137dont listen to him. a doom clone can be made by a beginner, there are a fuckton of tutorials out there.when you watch tutorials, remember to write things down like any mentioned concepts and then do your own studying later. dont blindly follow them.
Has anyone had success with getting the first bit of attention coming in for their game? Been posting a couple times a week on a bunch of socials but haven't had much interaction or engagement. It's a bit disheartening after working on the game for 6 months.

>>733042307>Is it worth engaging with people working on similar projects to yourself?sure, why not? The Sword Hero dev has given me a few likes and sometimes posts responses to my tweets, which I guess make them visible for their followers which is super niceKey here, way I see it (I'm no expert) is to engage with vidya related accounts that have a ton of followers so they notice you and maybe give you an RT that will boost your account to hell and back. There's also those accounts that post shit like "hey indie devs, post your game below!". Don't miss on those, it's a very nice chance to put your game out therethe Knight's Path gave me a like once too lol>and if they're around a similar follower count or miles ahead?better if they are miles ahead ofc. But be nice and give some feedback to fellow devs that don't have a lot of followers, I'm sure they'll appreciate it :)
