people keep mentioning a melancholy of the R1 era, but honestly I think it's not a bad idea to point out the horror tension in there too; once you start figuring out the risks surrounding the characters for digging too deep or even just being in The World there's always that feeling that something can go horribly wrong at any moment, multiple IMOQ dungeons are intentionally creepy as shit to fuck with you, the viral infection stuff tries to jump scare you every so often, and there's just this everlooming dread as a character you like digs a bit too deep into the Harald shit as the game's reality starts to break logic, physics may as well not exist, and broken areas never meant to be accessible become a surrealist fuckery even if the characters try to reason it away as game code.it's probably one of the best examples i can think of for a series that manages to be psychological without actually needing mental insanity and genuine madness on display, yet doesn't cross the threshold too far into supernatural to explain away what's happening thanks to the AI and programming nature of it all.

Genuinely didn't expect to see .hack ever again since Sword Art sucked up all the oxygen in the room and they're both owned by the same corpo. More than combat or any of that shit I'm worried if they still have the juice for simulating an MMO world and making it feel authentic, and creating MMO character personas that are masks for a real person that also has their own deeper characterization. SIGN was so good at that, you'd get to know Bear as the player character, then as the person behind the character. Even up to GU they had some of that, but it has been a long time.

As for tips, there's nothing much to give really other than looking up special key words on gamegaqs or something and doing those dungeons. Eventually you'll find twin daggers with death mods on them and let me tell you, those things are a time saver. Death mod doesn't outright kill enemies but it does take off a huge chunk of health and enemies tend to have a lot of HP. Doesn't matter how much Attack you have, just having that death mod can reduce the time it takes to down enemies. I used these twinblades all the way into Outbreak and eventually you'll find higher leveled ones to replace.Doesn't work on bosses and databugs though so you may need to keep and extra pair for damage against bosses and databugs.

I would come to adore the mysteries behind The World and spend inordinate amounts of time in hubs, watching the NPCs nose around town filling the screen with random chatter. I never got to complete the original quadrology, nor have I gotten to try the GU games. I’m excited to see a new release on the horizon, regardless. A ten floor dungeon in IMOQ is basically a grueling marathon where one bad room forces you back to the title screen.

I feel like the .hack series came abit too soon. I never truly appreciate how lore rich the desktop menu was. I only ever read emails, due to plot. I really hope all of this comes back even if they planning to have irl segments.
