I think we should gatekeep secondaries from them, because Aura had a staggeringly insignificant amount of screen time in the shows and games compared to her conversely significant role in the main plot, and so if gooners are going to be drawn to the new game just for her then we’re honestly better off letting this franchise die.

I watched the prequel anime for the imoq games before I played them and the plot was one of the worst things I have ever seen. The characters and their interactions with each other felt incredibly authentic to an mmo and the music was great. Only reason I got through it. I doubt i will ever try any peice of .hack media that isn't the games after that experience

The problem with SIGN that it was a talk anime where nothing happens in a sea of talk anime where nothing happens.
Flash forward today?
Still a sea of talk anime, infact the anime scene is basically a larger sea of talk anime that is a trope check list with small islands of action oriented series that prints money and gets the most attention. Anyway I digress.
The strange thing is they realized why SIGN is shit and have made moves to make the series actually have a modicum of progression.

>.hack//sign
>starts off just about a player trapped in the game world
>instead of being mostly about videogamey shlock, it deals with the players emotional state and power dynamics within the digital space
>few tidbits of levity and player interactions scattered throughout
>sometimes touches on special moments within online communities like encountering a legendary player or witnessing a rare event
>end of the show has the cast doing the equivalent of getting out of bounds and finding hidden easter eggs that begin to break down the framework of the game
>devolves into metaphysics as the show heads to a climax
goddamn that show was amazing. Of all of the cross-media IPs out there, .hack will always be the top tier for me. Pokemon was always neat but playing IMOQ at launch when the show was airing fresh was just on another level. Both were ways of exploring and learning more about "the world" which was just so a novel experience. Shame that such a feat will never be topped. Instead we get shonen garbage like SAO or baseline children's shows like pokemon/digimon/yugioh that all deviate heavily from the games so much that they may as well be different IPs.

kind of a double-edged sword though. Once the initial hype drew down there wasn't another entry point to bring in new fans. The novelty of discovering the lore gets blunted by your ability to access it. I've been trying to hunt down games, and novels, and other obscure media for this franchise for years before I gave up and decided to just plead to the cc2 gods for a imoq remake and some kind of database where you can actually read the whole story but it never arrived. Atleast with things like digimon or yugioh you dont need to have prerequisite knowledge to understand whats going on from something that released 15-20 years ago. The concept is the same overall and you can still connect with the older fans and get introduced to the legacy shit which is still very accessible. I love dothack but its one of the more difficult niches to get into if you really want to dive into it

>we are secondary citizens in this franchise

Felt that. I agree that it's always been the hardest part of being a fan of this IP. Trying to introduce new people to it is always super hard as well. Do you show them //Sign first, an anime that is 90% dialogue about the nature of loneliness and literally makes the watcher existentially ponder their life? Play the original ps2 quartet and have them think the series is action oriented, if they can even get into the gameplay of running down long halls for 2hrs+ at a time, go to town, read emails, repeat? It's like the creators want it to be as esoteric as possible

I've rewatched SIGN recently in the wake of the announcement and I'm honestly surprised how much I enjoyed the show, despite the fact 90% of it is dialogues in pretty much the same 4 scenes. it's to set the tone of tone of "the World" and the general writing style of Sign/Liminality/IMOQ. If you're coming in here expecting pure action or standard formula RPG then you're in the wrong series.
For the more open-minded, and expanded mind, you'll find a series like no other here that tackles themes that no other series dared to try with this setting for better or for worse.

Come with me in the twilight of a summer night for awhile
Tell me of a story never ever told in the past
Take me back to the land
Where my yearnings were born
The key to open the door is in your hand
Now fly me there
Fanatics find their heaven in never ending storming wind
Auguries of destruction be a lullaby for rebirth
Consolations, be there
In my dreamland to come
The key to open the door is in your hand
Now take me there
I believe in fantasies invisible to me
In the land of misery I'm searchin' for the sign
To the door of mystery and dignity
I'm wandering down, and searchin' down the secret sun
Come with me in the twilight of a summer night for awhile
Tell me of a story never ever told in the past
Take me back to the land

In the original 4 games there were some secret areas you could find by watching the included Liminality disks with subtitles on and looking at the back of SIGN dvd boxes. There were also the ghost characters from SIGN you could encounter in town.

I always remember the out of bounds you could do in GU vol.1 in Mac Anu with the bike and the area you could go to that had an enemy you were only supposed to be able to see from vol.2 onward. Roots started before Volume 1 came out, you can watch the first half of it before starting the games. They need to do a marketing campaign or something like that with this game. Maybe do a pseudo live service thing with ingame events where they add more words in patches or they add some new content to an existing area
Like imagine if they patched in something like the evil wizards quest from GU after release. Let's them continue to market the game after launch giving fans more shit to do while making it work like a pseudo MMO which is what the series already is

Not sure why that should be an issue. Besides a few isolated cases and the AIDA server, .hack has never really been an 'isekai'. It's a cyberpunk series themed around an MMORPG. honestly it's better to treat r1 like a menu based game where you play a support character more than a main damage dealer til you get the proper drops and skills. i've seen too many people try to jump in like it's action rpg but clunkier than R2, and it always ends with them feeling miserable; shit's gotta be treated more like a rapid equivalent to games like FFXI than any sort of smooth action.

You don't need to worry. The Hack brand has never been popular. The gameplay has always been shoddy and worse than Tales Of action RPG style games. And the story is divisive. I'm not seeing this brand magically selling grandiose by default.

Real life has shown the limits of VR entertainment which Hack relies upon as its gimmick so I don't think there's much of a draw here especially after Sword Art Online drained this gimmick until there was no more profit to get. There's really no reason to hope for this game to succeed especially since the Hack brand commits one of gaming's biggest sins, its NOT easy to get into for a newcomer. You can convince a new gamer to play things like Castlevania games but you're not going to convince someone to play the original series, watch the OVAs, and then do the same for the follow up series of Hack. That is a big investment. Especially when the games themselves aren't really that good to play. But enough said. Hack does a natural good job of filtering most people out.
>>
>>733259068
Original IMOQ are basically just 1 game broken up into parts so they don't change much. Just be glad they're really short. Sadly the games did peak with infection a bit but still had some really good kino moments in the later parts. The gameplay isn't for everyone and even hardcore fans will admit its not good or needs some improvement. If you're not into old school dungeon crawlers with clunky action combat though then these games won't be for you.

GU is a major improvement and plays way better but the story is more battle shounen.

Now that we know they have been working on this game in one way or another for the last ten years, I wonder if the girl in pic related has anything to do with ZERO. Her armor kinda looks similar to the one the new Black Rose is wearing, so maybe she was a prototype? Who know. I say this because Matsuyama teased Haseo's new form for Vol.4 twice before they even revealed Last Recode, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was a teaser for ZERO.

What Kite accomplished was more impressive than Haseo. In Kite's time, no one really had all the answers. The system administrator was just as in the dark as he was about a lot of things, and even Helba only had so many answers. And although the bracelet gave Kite's PC a lot of protections, it didn't raise his performance in any meaningful way the way Avatars did for Epitaph Users. Kite had to git gud really fast in order to survive. In the united front with Helba and Lios, he was functionally their equal, not taking orders from them and even taking charge at times when he needed to. This is why even in a post G.U. world with Avatars and shit, Kite is still a legend.

Haseo floundered for four months unable to make any headway into his investigation regarding Shino's coma. His investigation skills were lacking so all he could ever do was get led by the nose by Ovan. He wasn't smart enough to formulate any strategies and was heavily reliant on his Avatar for pretty much everything.

I don't think people realize just how big of a deal it is for Bamco to let CC2 self publish it. Yes. It means that CC2 is 100% responsible for everything from marketing to publishing and the cost if the game fails, but it also means that Bamco can't step in and go "You can't do that." or "We need the game to ship out by this time."
CC2 can do whatever they want and they can ship the game when they feel good and ready. You just need to look at what happened to Tri-ace, especially with SO5, to realize how bad publishers can be.

CC2 was never fully responsible for the series though. In fact, one could say that a lot of the later dumb story decisions were mostly CC2's fault. A lot of what made the earlier Project .hack special actually came from the Bandai side of things, or from freelance writers. CC2 had almost nothing to do with .hack//SIGN, for instance.

If anything, I'm a bit worried if CC2 really does have 100% control over the series going forward.

Thinking about how they are going to handle online culture and how the localizers will insert awful reddit/blusky memes makes me sick.

Also, after replaying through the entire series, I realized .hack is mostly built on amazing ideas, yet awful execution. The cutscenes were always a spectacle, but the plot was insanely convoluted initially, then in GU it simplifies but trades the mystery and intrigue for something more over the top and overtly anime. .hack had a sort of sweet spot in being an ARG before those were a thing. You're playing in an online urban legend/creepy pasta, and they built the narrative around that with all the accompanied news articles and forum posts. This was lost moving into GU, but the story felt a lot more "complete" in GU and the characters a lot more fleshed out and enjoyable.

Beyond all this, the art direction for the new game looks rough. They were already abandoning the high fantasy bit in GU. Now they look to be going almost SAO style with a lot of over designed elements and out of place modern tech.

I dunno. As somebody that holds the series near and dear to my heart even with its major flaws, this trailer does not inspire a ton of confidence.

His style of directing was called anything BUT normal and widely palatable. And he did it because it was his own thing, not to pander to a barely existing at the time audience. That's the difference. Right now feet fanservice isn't niche, it's literally everywhere, it's a staple of eastern mass-appeal character design and it attracts people who will buy any piece of media containing it.

I don't think it would be a bad idea. There is multiple cases within the series where the person's reality doesn't match up with who they present themselves as online. I also think the detective/investigator angle would be really neat since the game is going to have real world sequences which they said are going to be like an ADV.
It's just people looking at what was presented to us and most of what was presented to us was concept art of the detective and his partner along with the fact that the detective concept art was placed on the same spread as Not-Kite.

Multi-media project that capitalized on the early internet culture and MMO's being a huge deal.

Like I said above, it's a series with amazing ideas, but lackluster execution. As for how it plays, the initial four games feel a bit like the og PSO but you need to be a big dungeon crawler fan to play them as that is the entirety of the gameplay. GU gears the series more into a Tales like arpg, but it can be painfully easy when you figure out how to cancel your attacks.

As a whole, the series is like... a 4/10. It has an incredible concept, and amazing art direction, and a incredible ost across the media... but the gameplay and stories....

Like I said, it was a mixed bag. In IMOQ it felt like you were a random player drawn into an urban legend completely by chance. That was a much more engaging concept... problem is, M and O were complete filler and could have been completely done away with and a majority of the characters were insanely forgettable in those games.

Meanwhile, the GU trilogy went full anime and you felt like the chosen one which felt completely at odds with Sign and IMOQ, but the character writing and story felt much better and had genuinely nice payoffs. The school scene with Atoli will always be memorable in my mind.

Enjoy it more as a movie with filler gameplay or don't enjoy it at all. It's got some very basic gameplay (somehow even less satisfying than IMOQ), but it's servicable as a weird VN, Anime movie with inoffensive gameplay.

It's not gonna be the most fun to play, but one thing to keep in mind is that it was a series that you were supposed to beat one entry then wait a year for the next (ie: giving you a break on the monotonous gameplay). It's hard to experience it how it was meant to be now of days, but wether that's an excuse for the game or not is up on the air.

I think I would love something between .hack//sign and Sword Art Online (abridged). If a real malevolent AI just spawned in some virtual game world and it could potential trap/torture you through the game you'd still have a large swath of people run up to it just to call it nigger just to see if it was real, similar to how people say IRL say Bloody Mary into the mirror.
>>
The issue with .hack is that The World is a closed system. Once you solve its mysteries, that's it. So for later games, it becomes necessary to add new factors to serve as escalating factors. In .hack//G.U., it was AIDA, but AIDA ended up being very simple: they were just naturally forming AI clusters that got corrupted by malignant information in The World. In order to create a larger and ongoing narrative, something larger and more complex was needed. That's why they came up with mama, but this obviously ended up being a bad idea.

They had the capability to do something more natural, like, well, the problems of net information getting spread among other people and data stealing. A stalker, a murderer, someone actually going after players for real, or CC Corp steals player data for selling off to someone shady and then those shady folks start harassing players, etc. Instead they did the equivalent of jumping from their internalized mysteries about AI and data, to secret terrorist conspiracies the FBI can't even stop and turning real people into data.

Yeah but that's not really escalation, I think. Ultimately, there was no real means to organically "one-up" what happened in the original games. The true purpose of .hack was to explore the mysteries of this world created by Harald. Once those mysteries were solved, even Aura became unnecessary.

Yeah, I just don't have a ton of faith in them pulling this off, and if they somehow magically do, you've gotta deal with the localizers adding "flavor".

.hack was a product of the times and it's identity was always in flux after IMOQ. It had its small ups, and massive downs. I suppose if they were going to make a new one they really should abandon the MMO setting all together and instead embrace something like VRchat with hints of code from the MMO, but even that sounds bad to me. There's a really weird mix of what's happening now, as well as theorizing what's going to happen 10 years from now in the setting of .hack. But I guess we'll see what they deliver.

Also, I got a review I did somewhere of IMOQ. I'll post it for people interested in getting into the series if I can find it as it has some gameplay tips and its easier to listen to than reading a whole novel.

The greater point of .hack//SIGN wasn't about solving the mysteries of The World. It was just to showcase what some of the players of this game are like. The characters themselves are the point. In reality, .hack//SIGN is pretty unnecessary to understanding the story. Even the thing with Tsukasa was ultimately not that important since the games were written to be understood without requiring outside reading.

The mysteries were never really the point of the show. Almost nothing that happens in .hack//SIGN really matter. If the show was supposed to have a point, if everything was supposed to lead into something else, then characters like Mimiru and B.T. wouldn't even exist.

I'm talking about how in the last couple of years chinese culture have become significantly more relevant to mainstream gaming audience via their anime character design influences. My point is sexualization of .hack today is different from its sexualization from back then. Aura back then wasn't sexualized because "she's naked under her extremely covering attire" or whatever convoluted reason you came up with. Aura in the new trailer ticks multiple popular coomer checkboxes. That's what I meant by them whoring her out.
>>
Why yes I DO want MMO combat like FF12 / Xenoshit/DA1
>>
>>733265439
Still, I think .hack//SIGN was ultimately necessary to understanding The World and its players. To be completely frank, the games were absolutely awful at really showcasing what this game was like to normal players. It's impossible to get any real sense of the in-game norms from just playing the game. Kite isn't a normal player, and he only really gets the briefest of glimpses into how other players play the game. After all, most of his interactions with "normal" players are just short quests and a couple e-mail interactions. There are no guilds or public gatherings, there's very little social interactions.

Well, that is the part of online culture. Our ugly reality of it. Maybe the game should be about going back instead.

>Aura behind Kite
It's kinda funny how these two are just always together. In the games, they actually didn't interact that much. And yet Kite's memory is Aura's most cherished treasure. She will never, ever allow The World to forget him, and she always makes she he exists in every version of The World in some capacity. The original player left the game, yet Kite is a constant enduring force because of her. If Aura exists, then some version of Kite will exist as well.

Is the new game going to emulate Windows Vista again or is it going to be a more modern UI? It looks like a reboot so I'm guessing the latter
>>
>>733265518
Eh, I'm a realist, but beyond that from the MC design alone I can see that this art direction is not the one that I think of when I think of .hack. They'll definitely allow localizers quite a bit of freedom with forum posts as well, and if you know modern localizers you know what a pain that will be. Beyond all of that though, .hack has been a series with an identity crisis since the get go and it never really captured Sign and IMOQ's better elements after it's initial run. Every time they tried to revive it in various anime and movie forms (including an anime arena fighter), it always missed the mark. That's not to say that some miracle can't happen, but I'm erring on the side of caution on this one, especially considering how bamco handles less important properties.

>>733265805
Maybe they could have tried a remake of the original games, with an expanded look into what the net was like in the early days. Why did this series never really sell that great overall? Even in the gaming industry similar games like Dark Cloud built their cult fandom. But Hack never made a splash. Even Sly Cooper is better remembered than Hack. And yet it got a lot of sequels for a brand that never sold stellar. That's a curiosity of its own. Still why the low sales? Hack series was on Sony's most successful consoles so the userbase should have been huge meaning big sales.

And how well do you expect this game to sell?

anon, IMOQ is one game that they chunked into 4 for padding and $$$. GU is the same thing but 3 games. it didn't sell gangbusters because the subject matter was hard for normies to understand and so only a niche fanbase established.
>>
>>733266103
00s in Japan was an era of media-mix projects, expansive and ambitious attempts at creating multimedia franchises with video games, TV shows and even novels. Bandai in particular was big on this idea, starting with Digimon. .hack was just one of their attempts to bring it to life. They were aggressive because they had to be; they put a lot of money into these projects.

But ultimately, the concept never truly took hold. It was too ambitious. Bandai attempted to take advantage of the optimism of the internet to create something massive, but in reality, what the internet age broad us was lower attention spans. Very few people actually want to commit to an IP and play a bunch of games, watch a bunch of shows and read a bunch of novels just to keep up with it all.
>>
>>733266103
I think the fact that the games were divided into parts really filtered people, especially when the fact is that it was never really justified to be in parts. Each part of IMOQ was only like 20-30 hours long so at the end it was only a 80 hour JRPG which was super common on the PS2. That and the entry price was the cost of 4 games.

being ahead of its time while simultaneously being its own worst enemy. there's so much stuff that the average consume felt like they were being stilled. gamer were too smart to fall for the "these games had to be separated because they're too big" which probably didn't help things. multimedia work was too much for casuals and the simulated MMO style that included the grind isn't for most people. also .hack is inherently a slow-burn, philosophical mystery that deals with AI ethics, consciousness and trauma. taking all of that into account it's a pretty hard sell.

It was necessary to recoup costs. Each installment also game with a 30-minute OVA. The cost of the games technically kinda make sense when you treat the two as a packaged deal. Of course, most people don't take .hack//Liminality into account when they think of the games' monetary value. Plus I don't think a lot of people really think a 30 minute OVA that they perhaps didn't even like that much as worth it anyway.

>sell a game into four parts
>each part was sold for full retail on LAUNCH
>world building and characters are also split into a multi media format, games themselves references characters and events you'd have to watch/read other medias for
this series was truly an experiment and wasn't for the norms
>>
>>733265964
That's where the old guy main character would be appropriate too. Maybe trying to relive those days and mixing memories with current reality of the World with some other players who feel the same way, Aura somehow taking heed to that and so on.
>>
>>733266395
Yeah that's a big problem with the original games, it's really infection and quarantine that tell the plot and the other two are just threre.

It's super hard sell when someone is trying to get into the series but then they realize 2/4 games is basically filler tier
>>
>>733266338
It comes from the identity crisis and the fact that they never really could deliver on the concepts in any meaningful ways. Sign probably was the most cohesive and self contained entry, but every thing in the series was so disjointed and so vastly different. Still, the nips did adore it for a bit. It is kinda weird they slowed after GU as, to my knowledge, that series did very well in Japan but perhaps they were upset at the lack of global appeal.

>>
>>733266338
SAO was pure waifushit, no one was there for the setting or the story but instead for Kirito and Asuna fucking and doing family larping in an action drama
>>
>>733266452
The "old guy main character" thing is just wishful thinking. Matsuyama will never allow a game made under his watch with a protagonist that's older than 19.
>>
>>733266338
.Hack/Sign was pretty boring for the most part. I only watched like 2 episodes of SAO but it was probably much easier to watch for normies
Also having to buy 7 PS2 games (original and GU) is not an easy investment to get into something
>>
>>733266528
I think it's a case of after GU CC2 started getting really into licensed games.

I straight up just can't and don't recommend em. I have a special place for the series in my heart for sure. I love the atmosphere and ost, but they just aren't good games and going back to them is... rough. There are moments of fun here and there in IMOQ though, which is better than I can say for GU. If you are proficient with any sort of action game like DMC or Ninja Gaiden, you'll break GU to the point where even if you nerf yourself you'll be juggling every enemy you meet till they die.
>>
>>733266570
Sad because ojisans are the bulk of oldschool MMO audience of today. Would've been actually be somewhat relatable that way.
>>
I wont be interested unless this new series comes broken into 3 games and they release a physical version at a Gamestop midnight release.
>>
>>733266338
Because the .//hack franchise was designed to be multimedia from the get go and the care for each product suffered as a result. SAO was originally just a light novel but got traction which is what made it spin off into anime and video games.
You see this same "we wanna make a multi media franchise right NOW" failure in the present with Synduality.
>>
>>733266627
Could be, and who can blame em considering the IP's they were offered to work on. May have been a blessing in disguise though considering the mmo fad was dying... that, or they may have been just short of striking diamonds considering the SAO craze. I imagine they would have eventually gotten stuck to that IP if it wasn't for their arena fighters.

Loser middle-aged men who spend all their time playing games wouldn't be competent enough to save the world. If anyone's gonna become a hero, it's a fresh-faced kid with above-average intelligence and maturity who hasn't yet been worn down by reality. In other words, if we ever found ourselves in a situation where a single hero is absolutely necessary to avert a huge disaster, we may as well just give up then and there because such a hero doesn't exist.

It's sort of surprising to me just how much people neglected Data Drain for most of their playthroughs. Like you have this basic gameplay element that exists to get you stuff you might need for progress and yet you just ignore it until the last minute, only to get caught with your pants down when you realize, oh wait, this vital gameplay element was actually vital. The only way you could be THAT low on virus cores is if you completely refused to use Data Drain the entire playthrough.

It was because the game absolutely scared the crap out of you about using it and you don't realize how liberally you can use it. I remember as a kid being terrified to use it too much due to how deep you could be in dungeons and a death meaning a loss of 20 minutes to an hour or more, so you're afraid of just what negative side effects the bracelet can have and the game warns you how bad it can be. Of course, upon replaying it as an adult, you realize the only dungeon that can cause a full corruption game over is the secret one at the end of Q.

But Call of Duty is a game about firing guns and normies love shooting guns. In fact that's the marketing tagline for series like Ratchet and Clank where the creators of Ratchet said people love using the guns to blow shit up.

Hack is for all intents and purposes a cringy anime RPG and while Final Fantasy was respected during those days anime looking RPGs were not. I think the only new RPG series from that era that became a long running profitable success was Kingdom Hearts and that's because Disney was more respected as a global brand and the gameplay was actually surprisingly good for an experimental Action RPG. Anyway RPGs always have it rough and by the look of things not even Final Fantasy 7 Remake is bringing this genre to prominence.

Can't speak for everyone but I hated Sword Art Online strictly because as soon as the first episode explained that the main protagonist is an obnoxious Gary Stu who can solo everyone because he's a grinding maximum level up lamer I simply had to reject that series. That and I really hated how every single character with a vagina automatically had to worship that bastard. Never liked anime harem shenanigans because there's something so incredibly annoying about a bunch of women going on and on as if they got no lives explaining why they are all obsessed with the same douche.

I wish anime improved but sadly after Sword Art Online the go to anime cliche was isekai which means that now random losers from the real world go to an actual fantasy world and inexplicably they are super winner at life because they were losers who played lots of video games and every woman lusts after them. I simply can't stand this wish fulfillment junk.

.hacks buisness model made a lot more sense in japan where you could get a cheaper version that was just the game, the gap between releases was a lot smaller cuz they just made and released the game instead of having to localize the game after it's finished, and you had parody mode to justify a second playthrough. you could be done with a game pretty close to when the next one was out pretty similar to a modern episodic model

Maybe in the sense that Goku is from a literal other planet, or that its a powerscaling fantasy, but I'd argue that it doesn't really hit the core tenets of a fish-out-of-water adventure or a wish fulfillment fantasy. Better historical examples would be something like Inuyasha, Digimon, Those Who Hunt Elves, or Escaflowne. Even SIGN is more in line with the early tradition of being thrown into another world being a sidestep at best and a nightmare at worst. It wasn't until the late 2000s/early 2010s that isekai got married to the cheat power wish fulfillment where the protagonist is not allowed to face any legitimate challenges past some very early point.

If this qualifies Dragon Ball as an isekai then fucking Tarzan is one.
>The dragon balls are literally wish fulfilling mcguffins
Yes, but the point of the story is not the wish fulfillment of the reader. The taint of modern isekai writing is the protagonist as a thin shell for the reader to self-insert over and to have their fantasies of being powerful, popular, and free acted out, because in reality they're a powerless, friendless, economically doomed high schooler. It's the same shit Twilight did for western girls, just aimed at sad Japanese boys instead.
>>
>>733268751
I am answering the criteria you're providing.
Goku quite literally constantly has no knowledge of the impending threat no matter the arc. Be it being surprised that there will be saiyans coming to earth in 6 months, learning that there are other dragon balls on other planets, that an old obsessed foe went and made androids to take him down, etc. etc.
That he solves everything pretty much by training to punch harder than the other guy does not devalue that his adventures are constantly him being a clueless fish being exposed to a larger pond.
