For a 1987 this is pretty incredible, i don't think there's a single more technologically advanced game from that era. Why is it not heralded like SMB1 or Zelda 1?
cause it's fucking boring
>>733612000Nintendo invented gaming so they deserve it
>>733612000This
>>733611929Same reason why this isn't at the top of lists for 8-bit games.
It's a great game, the sega ages port on Switch is quite good as it made dungeon crawling a little more feasible (auto map that fills out as you explore), as well as including the FM chip for better sound/music unlike the western Master System release. Both options are there, but I would highly recommend the Sega Ages versionAnd yeah technically speaking, it looks great, sounds great, has a cool story. Nice animated sprites for the enemies. It puts the original DQ and FF to shame imo. Love me some Phantasy Star. If I had to guess it's more that RPGs didn't really take off in the west until things like Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and to a bigger extent games like Final Fantasy 7 where it really blew up. Most westernes didn't really care about Sega until the Genesis. Master System went under the radar, and Genesis itself had some great RPGs like Shining Force and Phantasy Star 2/4 etc but it got overshadowed by Nintendo, then Playstation.
>>733611929>i don't think there's a single more technologically advanced game from that eraJust one year later
we love alisa here?
>>733612723
>>733611929Nintendo fanboys control the discourse, and have for years. They all grew up with the SNES/N64, and were part of that first wave of video game content creators on Youtube.SEGA never really had a "voice" on the internet either (outside of what.. UK Resistance?), so all the good they did is ignored and swept under the rug.
>>733612468wtf, POLE POSITION EVOLVED????
SMB1 is the most overrated game ever
>>733612000right from the first post, nintendo derangement syndrome
>>733613240no one likes or tolerates you anymore nintendie
>>733613240Nothing deranged about the truth.
>>733613240>>733613342>>733613354Don't derail the thread into console war faggotry, you have a million other threads for that. Nintendo has nothing to do with Phantasy Star beyond being one of the only platforms where you can actually buy and play the original Phantasy Star.
>>733613394It has everything to do with the premise of the thread, which is asking why it is not heralded like Nintendo games. You can close your eyes to the truth if you want, but it's the truth regardless.
>Shut up nigger
>>733613592Did they make her playable in Puyo Puyo?
>>733613637No, but they did for Sonic. We always gotta make room for Sonic.
>>733611929Phantasy Star is the best JRPG of the 8-bit era. The series should have been as popular as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
Was the Phantasy Star series hard carried by Phoenix Rie?
>>733614354Too bad they chose the Genesis for IV instead of SNES
i enjoyed Lunar
>>733614523the Phantasy Star games are basically like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey on the Xbox 360, great rpgs stuck on consoles mostly played by people that didn't even like the genre. Some games would have benefitted greatly from being available on Nintendo or Sony hardware
>>733614523I cannot imagine Laughter or Ooze with the SNES soundchip
I wish Phantasy Star stayed the weird mix of fantasy/sci-fi the original game did instead of shifting further into sci-fi over time.>Be a typical sword n board hero that wouldn't look out of place if you were transplanted into any other RPG of the time.>But you live right next door to a PUBLIC SPACEPORTi like it
>>733612302What did u think of the Ps2 version
>>733615721*playstation 2
>>733614523>>733615262retard take, the music of psiv does a ton of the work, and it would simply not sound as good on the snes chip>>733615721nta but generations is the better version in my opinion. they're literally what remakes should have always been instead of the trash we get now presented as remakes
>>733611929It's really incredible for 1987. Better than games coming out 10+ years later.
>>733616029wtf happened
When was the last time Sega acknowledged these games directly that wasn't a re-release? Last I recall was the shitheap that was Ep5 in PSO2.
>>733617613Which one

>>733611929It's much better than Final Fantasy 1>>733612015Dilate, tranny street shitting zoomer
>>733611929What's the best Genesis emulator so I can play Phantasy Star 2? The one I'm using somehow runs like shit.

>>733616016>retard take, the music of psiv does a ton of the work, and it would simply not sound as good on the snes chipIsn't the SNES sound chip way better than the Genesis?
>>733615721NTA but the PS2 version sucks ass, it's way more grindy, it redesigned the game to be completely linear, and it barely did anything to flesh out the gameplay or story in the process. The new graphics aren't even good either.
>>733612468Opened the thread for thisIt blows my mind that there's like two random ass arcade cabinet racers from the 1980s that look like ps1 games

>>733611929because no one in america had a master system and modern videogame discourse has been shaped by the american perspective, see shit like the "great videogame crash of 1983" (actually only in america)
>>733625948>modern videogame discourse has been shaped by the american perspectiveAlso the Nintendo perspective. People act like systems like the N64 and Gamecube were bigger and more influential than they actually were, while often mostly ignoring anything from Sega or Sony or whatever.
>>733611929PS is one of my favourite jrpgs for sure
>>733626897This is so strange, because I remember fucking everyone had an N64 when growing up. But looking back it was vastly outsold by the Ps1.
>>733612916Revisionist at best. Sega Master System was a big failure in the USA, nobody could take Huehuehue macacos as proof of nothing and Europoors didn't take PS as an outstanding game until some UK mag tell them. Very FEW people play it when it was new, considerating the plataform, the sales and the whole impact of the game in the greath schemes of things. And with that I said, I love Phantasy Star.
>>733611929Nintendo manchildren hate rpgs. This was an rpg that wasn’t even on a Nintendo system. You do the math.
I'm not a prude, but Alis's design in PSO2 pisses me off. A sexy, overdetailed outfit that has her tits spilling out is the opposite of Alis and who she is.
>>733611929There were some wizards on the OG Phantesy Star series. Some of the MIDI music still great and quite technically impressive.
>>733628851what have they done to our fair alis
>>733629291It's even worse in-game.
>>733611929No nintendo yakuzas bribing magazines
>>733628851I resent what art style has become for Phantasy Star now. It was starting in Universe, but by PSO2 it's just a fuckin mess of horniness. Which means all the classic callbacks to old games becomes "woo see that nostalgia BUT WITH TITS".
>>733628851>>733629481Fuck'n TRASH
>>733629579>I resent what art style has become for Phantasy Star now.Reminds me of what happened to Shining Force
>>733628851>>733629481we fire emblem now
If only Sega hadn't been so cocky...
Are those DS games any good that Reiko Kodama and Co. made?Love Phantasy Star and Skies of Arcadia. also I feel like my DS RPG knowledge is spotty as hell.
>>733611929>Why is it not heralded like SMB1 or Zelda 1?The short answer is that SEGA completely flubbed the release and support of all its consoles in Japan up until the Saturn so PS1 never got a chance to shine in the country that could appreciate it the most. We often hear about how much better the Master System did in Europe and Brazil, but even in the US it was seen in a much better light than in its home country where SEGA fans had to parse through a meager library of shit software coupled with a bloated selection of confusingly incompatible hardware addons.I think there's a decent amount of nostalgia for Phantasy Star in the West, especially because it got a pretty good localization for the time, but to really be impactful it needed to be successful in Japan where Dragon Quest-style games were tearing up the sales charts along with Mario and Zelda. And without that influence on other developers it really can't stand as much more than a "hidden gem"
>>733614498Not really, even when she was still alive there's been a lot of revisionist history regarding how involved she was with the series. Usually by progressives.
I haven't played the remake but I like the faces Alis makes in dialogue.
