No one can ever convince me that Xenogears ever looked good. I got it on a demo-disc (US PlayStation Magazine) and it was such an eyesore then. I didn't know about Evangelion until a decade later. If one game needs a remake, it's Xenogears.

I have never played a Xeno game. I have no clue how they're connected. Squaresoft made the original one but then Bandai-namco made the rest? Huh? Who owns this series? Are they even officially connected?

They are all directed by the same author Tetsuya Takahashi, after leaving Square he made Monolith Soft and started working with Namco, after the commercial failure of Xenosaga, Nintendo bought Monolith and they made Xenoblade
