using microphone as headphones is suboptimal

Is it really common that people are using this setup?

It absolutely does pick up the keyboard yeah but NVIDIA Broadcast was able to filter it out, idk if that still exist or has evolved into something else by now

Yeah. You can get a decent one for about $30-$50, and the ubiquity of voice and video calls in a lot of people's lives have driven interest and demand.

Personally, I don't really care, so I get by with a $4 mic that still sounds really good, but if I was chatting every day and outside of video games, I'd probably care a bit more about it sounding even clearer, or to be able to not have it sitting on my head and picking up my breathing.

reminder you can just plug any old gas station headphones into the microphone slot and just speak into the earbud itself.

I really need to find a microphone that neither stands nor is attached to a headset, I don't want to wear something heavy or have my desk obstructed

Discord has the built in Krisp (tm) shit, and Nvidia broadcast is really good as well. A lot of background noise removal is functionally perfect, depending on the noise and how much work you have them put in. Even OBS lets you modify your mic output for recordings/streams to reduce background although not as good for very noisy environments since at some point you'll be screaming into the mic just to get it to pick you up and the audio quality goes to shit. Background noise is a thing of the past.
>>
I fell for the separate mic meme a few years ago. Never again. Fucking annoying have something in front of your screen in your face. Back to the headset mic

the problem is that whenever I give one word answer like, yep, nope, sure, ready, go, stop, etc. the Krisp mic settings never pick it up and I have to artificially increase the length of my statement to get it to pick up my mic

I know this is /v/ but any recommendations for a new mic? I got a snowball a long time ago and want to up my audio game a bit. I'm hoping after all this time stuff in like the general 100-200 price range is a little better. Although, I don't realistically know how much audio devices can be improved for the cheap range.
>>733637340
It's about positioning. I have an arm the comes from the back of my desk over my mouse hand towards me and then I just turn the mic to face my mouth but never put it directly in my visual path.
>>733637353
oh is that an open mic thing? I only use push to talk with a slight button release delay so that doesn't happen for me.

I need an interface either way for work. Would rather use some neutral beyerdymanics as headphones and a standing mic since I can use the mic to record guitar etc. too. If you don't do music a headset is fine but if u ever plan too, investing in a interface setup and real headphones is Def. Worth it.

>OBS - fine

>Discord - gives me background static noise, i'm always either too loud/quiet and also sound like i'm speaking through a Nokia 3310

I use that just because I want to use proper headphones with DAC AMP. Only poors use "gaming headsets".
>>
Good muc quality is troon coded, it immediately makes me assume you're a he-she with voice acting aspirations. If it doesn't sound like I'm listening to a home made radio made by a low IQ specimen in a prison you are my ideological enemy and I hope you get inoperable brain cancer.

get one of those mini shotgun mics for cameras and stick it somewhere out of the way, pointed at your mouth or chest.

Meanwhile I have to reduce the mic volume in OBS significantly or my voice is the only thing you can hear in recordings.

I've had an antlion detachable headset mic and I'm surprised it has held up for all of 6 years, even though the cable sheath has gotten some cuts in it. If i ever had to replace it I'd get the wireless one to avoid that. Kind of a steep investment for a simple product but you get to use actually good headphones and not bother with a desk mic.
>>
>>733636975
>you have to lean forward into your microphone
Depends on the microphone. For condensers, no. For dynamics, maybe.

>>733638653
>What the fuck is discord doing?
They have build-in compression, noise-cancellation and level boosting. Kind of like a "one tool fits all". Except in reality it doesn't match anyone particularly well.

I wish we could just disable the whole thing, and let us use our own settings.
>>
>>733635839
I got one because I like headphones but barely ever use it due to social anxiety and not being a dicksword user

I like her already!

Why is it that "common" voice software don't have queues or talking-turn systems? I would much rather participate, if it wasn't just a free-for-all, amongst the loudest people.

I know one guy with this setup and everytime he lifts his mouse and places it back on the desk or hits his keyboard even slightly hard the microphone wobbles forward and hits the filter and it sounds like being inside of a rolling cheese grater.
>>
>>733635920
yeah, for the longest time i was just using my headset mic, mostly using corsair for a decade, but i got a at2020 mic and the reason i got it because i either had to talk really loud when the mic is far from my mouth (which is bad at night for me) or keep at my mouth and have my friends hear me breath, but cranking up the gain on the at2020, and keeping some distance from my mouth, talking quietly at late night, my friends can hear me
>>
a dynamic mic like an sm57 has worked so well for me that i can't imagine going back to a headet or even a condensor mic. small, cheap, and clear enough while isolating the voice without background noise bleeding in.
