Finished VLR and i'm completely baffled. Such a good game for 90% of the playthroughs and then the ending happens and it left me totally confused on why the plot was written like this. It made me wish this wasn't related to 999. I'm honestly thinking about not playing ZTD because people claim it's bad and i don't want it to tank my enjoyment of the whole series.

I wish I could say otherwise but that's probably for the best.
999 was peak. VLR was pretty strong.
ZTD was baffling.

Same thing with 999, sadly. We don't talk about the third game.

ZTD does a lot more to try and make the whole series work as a whole so if you didn't like that bit of VLR yeah I'd say skip it.
It's not great even if you are invested in that aspect, but at least then you have a reason to stick it out and maybe come to appreciate how absurd it is. Without that draw it'd likely just be disappointing.
Though honestly it is a genuine example of 'so bad it's good' at times and if you go in not expecting a serious conclusion you can still have some fun with it.

It's because Uchikoshi might be genuinely a retard savant; the fact that VLR got made at all after 999 bombed in Japan is a miracle, and instead of playing it safe, he decided to write by far the most ambitious work of his entire career, then end it with basically a "to be continued". Maybe he thought VLR was genuinely the last thing he would write (his bosses told him that it was his do-or-die project, supposedly). Even then, the decision to end its plot like that is incomprehensible.
I'm still happy he did what he did, VLR is absolute peak, even with the flaws it has; legitimately a masterpiece.
The issue is really how bad of a follow-up ZTD is, and that is 100% on Uchikoshi himself, since even if you ignore everything else bad about that game, the plot retardation is 100% on him.

don't worry, ZTD is so funny and all over the place that your brain won't even consider it canon
and, as much as it's not a good followup, i still kinda enjoyed the ride. every now and then it'd drop a cool trope in the sea of trash. then again, i was playing it on release, so I've benefit from amusing threads and joyful shitposting

ZTD is honestly worth it just out of the sheer absurdity of it, it's so bad it's good, and it's shorter and the puzzles are way easier than VLR so it's not even a big investment of time
