Call me crazy - heck, call me cookoo bananas - but when I enjoy a classic Pokémon title, I often select one of the original versions instead of the ultimate edition third version.
>>
>>733646187
i emulate whichever version I didn't have; e.g. I had Blue as a kid so in modern times I'll play Red on my chinkheld
>>
>>733646187
That's because the third versions have always been fun novelties, not definitive editions. Yellow, with its anime tie-ins, was the only third version worth getting.
>>
>>733646189
Emerald was the definitive version of Gen 3.
>>733646187
3rd versions are fun to emulate, but outside of Emerald, they're generally not the best way to experience the game.
>>
>>733646187
diamond and pearl and some funny glitches to dick around with, but i don't see why you'd want to replay them over platinum
>>
Not retro.
>>
>>733646187
Platinum has a Pokémon following you hack though that also fixes the frame rate and it's seriously the best way to enjoy that particular generation. You can also add the fairy type if you really wanted to, but personally I didn't (would change the game's balance):
https://pokehacking.com/fangames/following-platinum/

If you have a Wii and enjoy some Pokémon Battle Revolution: I can confirm it works great, same as HG/SS.

Anyway, if Platinum shipped like this I initially (followers + no ridiculous slowdowns) I can guarantee you it would be remembered as the GOAT, it's mad charming.
>>
>>733646190
Why is emerald better?
>>
>>733646187
Not retro

Norwood 6
>>
>pick me! pick me!
>>
>>733646194
Combines the Team Aqua and Team Magma stories into the same game.
>>
>not playing all three from scratch, each with a different starter and E4 team, training between them to assemble a complete Pokedex on each game
You did not beat the game
>>
>>733646197
Ah
>>
>>733646198
That's OK with me
>>
>>733646198
>he didn't do a Professor Oak Challenge for each game
You did not beat the game.
>>
I basically agree. Third versions have a tendency to just remove a lot of Pokemon that were perfectly available in the original paired versions, so if you're going to be trading anyways to complete the dex, I don't see much point in playing them, and I think the additions made otherwise aren't worth it.

If I want to play gen 1, why should I pick the version that cuts out a ton of Pokemon for the hell of it? If I want to play gen 2 or 3 or 4, why should I pick the one that cuts out several of that gen's Pokemon?
>>
>>733646202
Pretty much this
>gen 1
Getting all three starters is cool, but getting to choose your starter is fundamental to Pokemon.
>gen 2
Adding a bunch of gay Eusine events and some frames of animation to Pokemon isn't worth losing Ampharos.
>gen 3
The added story sucks. More trainers with Mightyenas and Golbats. Woo. Nerfing the piss out of Pick Up sucks.
>>
>>733646195
lol
>>
>>733646187
Why do sega system threads get deleted but not these?
>>
>got a copy of pearl as a kid for cheap at gamestop
>barely played it cause i had lost interest in pokemon at that time
I wish I had been aware of the fucking 2016 reprints when you could still get them
>>
>>733646187
I do the same. Third versions always come with monkey's paw "different for the sake of being different" changes that I dislike.
>>
>>733646187
sapphire>emerald
>>
>>733646187
I could see that for RS or GS over their respective third versions, but DP have a dex of 150 Pokemon. Platinum has 210, and the additions are actually good- Gliscor, Houndoom, Eevees, etc

I like the idea of replaying Gen 4, but it was Pokemon at its worst from needing one or two HM slaves with you at all times.
>>
>>733646187
You picked one of the shittiest examples. Diamond and Pearl are terrible and blatantly unfinished.

is there a reason to not play platinum over p/d? I'm asking this as someone that only had pearl as a kid. Like it just seems like an objectively better game.
>>
>>733647281
It's a bot doing the prof oak challenge in emerald, except only with shinies.
I don't really understand why it needs 3 vileplumes though.
The numbers are caught / needed
>>
>>733646190
>Definitive
>No Courtney
Nope
>>
>>733646194
>>733646197
If I might add some reasons too. The obvious one is the Battle Frontier. Yeah it's kinda gimmicky but it really did give you a sort of end goal that, at least as a dumb kid, seemed kinda infinite due to how it was the only part of the game where you had a legitimate challenge. Only place in the game where overlevelling didn't get you past a road block.
In addition, extra Johto mons that didn't get added into the rest of the generation outside of the GC titles were good to have, still have found memories of catching Miltank. I named them Peanut then cloned them a bunch of times.
That's another one, the cloning glitch in Emerald was really easy to pull off so infinite whatever held item if you really needed it.
Not that they were ever easy to access but Navel Rock and Faraway Island were all neat in concept, shame events weren't readily available back then. Think a guy on YT figured out how to make fake ereader cards for anyone that really wants to try and get them the intended way.
Last but not least was the gift of a Johto starter if you somehow completed the regional dex. Never pulled it off myself but it's neat that the reward was there unlike RS.
Last big one, gym leader rematches, should be a thing in all the games imo but I like it as both a fun xp farm and as a "Hey, you did great! Come on back for a rematch!" moment where it gives you the sense of growth, like now they gotta pull out the stops
>>733647531
Game Courtney is meh. Manga Courtney is where it's at
>>
>>733646187
Eh, I don't hate DP and I'm fine with playing them along with Platinum.
Aside from the Battle Frontier, I prefer playing RS over Emerald because Emerald's Brendan/May designs are so shit.
>>
>>733648953
Emerald's Battle Factory is the best piece of mainline pokemon content in all its history. A shame they don't make frontiers anymore.
>>
>>733647029
Oh sorry
>>
>>733647328
You can do the void glitch, and if you have a 1.0 Jap version of D/P, you can easily clone items with another expkloit. Besides that, not really

Oh I just remembered Pokemon Ranch only works with Diamond and Pearl too
>>
>>733649180
>I don't hate DP
I hated them because of how slow everything was. Platinum fixed that, mostly. It's still not as fast as Gen 3 games, but in DP every single action was like going through molasses.

>Adding a bunch of gay Eusine events and some frames of animation to Pokemon isn't worth losing Ampharos.
Also Crystal requires a GameBoy Color, while Gold/Silver were technically DX games, making them available to poorfags still using the original.
>>
>>733646187
D/P are some of the worst games in the (classic) series:
>Type variety is almost non existent: 2 fire types (1 is a starter), 3 electric types, 2 dragon types and 2 ice types (realistically 1 since Snover's snow warning hinders all but fellow ice types). The reason Sinnoh teams are a meme is because of the little variety in types.
>This hinders the gym leaders and elite 4 who have so few themed mons to work that they just have random shit like Medichan for the Ice leader, Octillery for the electric gym and the fire elite 4 member who has Lopunny and Steelix. Redditors cope with "Erm well actually it's a GOOD thing!" while missing the point that said teams are like this because of the lack of variety available to the player.
>AI for a wild level 3 Bidoof is the same on used for champion Cynthia. So if you ever lose to her congrats; you're retarded.
>Previous generation had 60fps, now we're back down to 30fps, surfing is set to walking speed, le Blissy healthbar.webm
>Fucking defog, fog making already slow battles take even longer.
>Third of the new dex is locked behind post game!
>Putrid presentation: radioactive green grass, baby first battle UI, grass gym was just "use the overworld tiles" and the ghost gym is bright purple rooms with slow elevators and the puzzle is "solve the maths problem" kinda shit you'd find in a beginner rom hack.

The only reason to play these is if you REALLY like Glameow.
>>
>>733646187
You are cookoo bananas
>>
>>733646187
The sad thing is if it was the original R/B and no more than $10 I would have bought it. Who the fuck would ever consider a gba port of anything ultimate
>>
>>733646189
Yellow was the worst of the three. Otherwise, the third version typically massively improves on the original and everyone should start there.
>>
>ooh im playing ruby, i should use the fire starter!!
>ooh im playing sapphire, i should use the water type!!

>>
>>733649672

>>
>>733650132
I liek mudkipz so if the game lets me choose him I will
>>
>>733650132
I don't think any kid picked the grass type in any context. Shit was fucking LAME and all their T1 Evo's always looked goofy as fuck. Bulbasaur, chikorita, treecko. All ugly as sin

Turtwig I will give a pass tho he's cool. Probly the only one who wasn't mogged by his stage 2 evo
>>
>>733650189
Not to forget Machoke, and by extension Machamp, is also available in an ingame trade
>>
>>733650189
It's not more fun to get stuck with a Pikachu that doesn't want to evolve. You could play Red while upside down wearing clown makeup if you want to be unnecessarily restrictive. That's definitely not better.
>>
>>733650484
Pikachu is cool, you are just a hater.
He isnt a bad mon
>>
>>733650484
Raichu is fat and ugly and has no bitches just like you. Nigger
>>
>>733650191
In some ways yes, but it also creates new problems:

good:
>More type variety
>Parts of the game are faster (battles are still pretty slow, still 30fps)
>Ai was improved
>Gym layouts and battle UI were revamped

Bad:
>Pointless additions which only waste time like Looker: all he does is add more pointless time wasting text boxes to every scene he's added to.
>Same with Charon/Pluto
>Story is worse now because Cynthia actually shows up during the climax of team Galactic's plans...only to stand to one side while the unproven child with 7 badges does it.
>Distortion world is overrated.

Platinum is certainly better than base D/P to be fair, but that's not hard to do.
>>
>>733650829
>Distortion world is overrated
You have to understand that to this day Distortion world is the most technically impressive thing Game Freak has ever managed to create.
>>
>>733650943
Sure, but looking back it's a themed hallway that you visit a grand total of twice with nothing really to offer other than 1 legendary and a few strength puzzles.
>>
>>733650943
It's so sad and pathetic that you're right

Best selling game series in the world btw. Normalfags are a cancer
>>

>Not retro.
Pearl is older now than Red was when Pearl released
>>
>>733653438
And? Retro is a specific time period, not just old stuff.
Games made for 6th gen and newer consoles can never be retro, no matter what /vr/ says.
>>
>>733654146
Retro isn't a specific time period. You felt like it was when you first learned the word.
>>
>>733654146
No it isn't lol
Retro is more of a style than it is a period, and even then cutting off "retro" at a particular year is going to get you shit because a ton of people will almost certainly consider games after your arbitrary point "retro"
>>
>>733654146
>>733654278
>>733654338
retro /rĕt′rō/
>Involving, relating to, or reminiscent of an earlier time; retrospective.
>Retro style is imitative or consciously derivative of lifestyles, trends, or art forms from the past, including in music, modes, fashions, or attitudes.
Retro style does not include old things at all. Modern pixel art indie games are "retro" because they imitate old games, but old pixel art video games are not, they're just old games.

>>
>>733655260
why are moves not listed in their R/S teams?

>>
>>733654497
The dictionary definition of retro is wrong.
But so is any definition that pegs it as starting at a specific year or being unable to move forward. Retro as a term existed before video games, if retro never moved then no video game would be retro.
>>
>>733649550
>tfw I got all my Diamond pokebros trapped on Ranch because I somehow missed the bullshit that you can only withdraw pokemon to the game that deposited them (fucking why) and I thought I could use the game to keep my pokemon when I restarted my save file

Yes, and you can play Red with Charmander in the box, too. That game explicitly allows you to pick from 3 starters like basically every other game in the series, though. Yellow assumes you care more about the anime, so it just sticks you with a Pikachu.
>>
>>733649672
>nooooo the red man doesn't use red pokemon only

>3rd versions .... generally not the best way to experience the game.
This is so true
Yellow: Anime tie-ins make it worse, Pikachu is a horrible starter, anyone playing it always has the same boring teams of Charizard/Blastoise/Venusaur/Pikachu + 2 others
Crystal: don't remember how it handled the Ho-Oh/Lugia parts to be honest so can't complain
Emerald: while it combines both Magma/Aqua stories, you get "half" the story of each, it's better to have one team as the bad one and get the full story that way
Platinum: messed up the story by having this new legendary story
BW2: it's a sequel story, not a third version, fun but the story in BW1 is just better
UltraSM: Worse by adding the whole multiverse crap, the original story is just way better
>>
>>733661972
You're only right about Yellow and USUM you retard
>>
i kinda like ruby and sapphire more than emerald
emerald is the DEFINITIVE version, but often i don't need the definitive version

The basic introduction of type advantage is worthwhile. These are games for 6 year olds. Showing that Brock likes rocks is part of their progression. Harder teams exist, they just aren't for intentionally single-type gyms.
