It literally was. Sony predicted the Metaverse, they made a prototype of VR Chat and they were able to make a better product than Second Life. The only real issue was that gamepads are awful for interacting with people outside of emotes. PS Home was very soulful, if it had existed on PC it would have lasted way longer. It's a good thing the fan project turned out so well.
