I think the game is brilliant because the tone and horrific atmosphere is unreplicable as proved by the UE5 slop remake, just as any of the og SH games, which are all great. People overjerks symbolism and plotpoints in the game, because it's also quite nice all things considered, but what really makes it all come together is the intrincate design of situations that are meant to alienate the player and make them uncomfortable in all sorts of ways. That goes beyond the plot or the themes by themselves, and while i agree that people overthinks that aspect of the games, it's the general picture what excels, not every single detail by itself.

People failing to pinpoint why they liked SH games so much has everything to do with why Konami is at a loss at trying to recapture the magic after disbanding the team years ago and also after firing Kojima, who is the only chance at a proper vision the franchise had ever since.

I think that tends to happen because it's easier to notice specific things like plot or metaphores (or graphics) when discussing videogames rather than the actual experience of playing, which is multifactorial and honestly impossible to quantify properly. It demands a certain sensibility and attention to detail that not everybody is even aware is necessary.

Videogames are trapped in moron target audience hell because of how easy it is to enjoy them compared to their creative merit, which is inmense.

I feel similarly about people saying Zelda games suck because the combat or the plot are so simple, when it is evident that theres something a lot more complex that they excel at and make them successful. Its just a lot harder to pinpoint.

I love the game and think its brilliant, but I agree that the devs didnt cover their ass about that. Either the concept of angela seeing things differently came after the fight was designed, or the fight came later but they let that notion go.

Most games are pretty simple. You jump on enemies, you die, you have to insert another quarter to continue. Silent Hill 2 changed all that.

I dont know about that Pyramid head thing. I think that scene is not out of place at all. Its clearly doing something sexual with those mannequins and is one of the most memorable moments in the game. What's odd is the insistence that its not raping them. Like sure, it's technically not doing that, but its very hard to not see it in an obscene way. In any case, limiting the scene into clearly being clarly a rape diminishes its effect compared to just wondering if thats it. Its a monster doing monstruous things.

Regarding Angela's POV, yeah, its odd that some people isnt satisfied with the very literal way in which things are portrayed. Its still fun to guess at different meanings and possibilities for things in a game like this, so i understand that imagination exercise.

In any case what i find odd about that is that the scene is brutally crude as it is presented, so i can hardly think about angela making it any worse than what we see. I mean, maybe she sees his literal father trying to rape her while burning or something but that's hardly worse than what's being already portrayed.

If anything sh2 does this weirdly bizzare thing of trying to redeem James after the reveal as much as it can, that I find it odd that some people treat him as irredeemable probably because they do have the headcanon rape and cheating on his wife shit.
Angela scene is top tier and 100% worth the slight nothing burger issue of the logistics of how the town works. I think the ugly monster was the perfect brutal way of showing it instead of just implying it like a lot of lesser games would have

I always thought that when you were in one of the areas central to another character's story then you were in their Silent Hill. The cold meat locker reflects Eddie in the same way the burning staircase or the fleshy piston room reflects Angela. If it were the inverse you could imagine Angela going from somewhere burning to somewhere flooded when James is around, for example.

I don't know if that was the intention at all, but it felt like the most natural assumption given how the areas themselves feel like a reflection of the characters when someone other than James is in focus.
