High effort, high quality JRPGs of the 90s are in a category of their own. Detailed portrait art, lots of lush supplementary materials, great writing, voice acting that was often better than the anime dubs of the day (not saying much, granted), genuinely FUN to play, compelling overarching story with complex villains and plot twists, all with a great sense of self-aware humor (NOT insufferable millennial quirk chungus """humor"""). It saddens me to think we'll never see anything like this again, Western studios just push the same DEI slop in the skinsuit of a once beloved franchise, and Asian studios have moved mostly to gacha and mobige. Anyone who worked on titles like Lunar, Lufia etc. is long since retired or dead now and outside some niche indie communities doesn't look like they'd ever make a comeback.Which nostalgic period would you want to revive, /v/?
