Zoomer here, Can someone tell me the appeal of LAN parties?
>>
You and all your cool friends (plus Ethan, your best bro's little brother) get to hang out shooting the shit while playing games you like instead of having to do so over spotty, inconsistent Internet connections with mediocre VOIP systems.
One of those has been fixed and one of those is "better." But even in the modern day, there is a deep satisfaction of just being around other peeps who love a game.. just playing the game with them.
>>
It's less about playing games on LAN together and more about playing Cave Explorer with your bros once your PCs being all together heated the room and got everyone sweaty.
But also in the 90's/early 2000's, high speed internet was a luxury. LAN parties were the only way for lots of people to play with zero lag.

Back then, a lot of people had dialup or shitty DSL Internet, so to be able to play in person with your friends or a get-together (LANParty.com had dozens daily across the United States alone during its peak) and enjoy 0 ping multiplayer action with no packet loss was a major appeal. It also gave you social interaction during a time before Mumble, Discord, Xbox Live, Ventrillo, etc. A lot of non-Valve multiplayer PC games didn't have built in voice chat, so being able to hear people react in real time to the game was fun.

Also just in general, people hadn't been ruined by smartphones and social media yet.

It was a great way to share games and mods, too.

Warning! You are in a falseflag thread made by a friendless troonllennial loser. Zoomers go to LAN parties and even Alphas do so here in Scandinavia to this very day. This image is from a LAN party in my country two years ago. Repeat: you are in a falseflag thread.

>hanging out with friends and playing games all night
I can't possibly fathom what the appeal is anon
>>
I realized that you wouldn't be able to make a huge lan party today. Look at those pictures. Imagine 6 friends with modern GPUs. You are getting 5000W transients on the line if you're all playing the same game and loading to a match unless it's something older.
>>
>>733656097
Hanging out with friends and playing video games late into the night/morning while eating junk food, what's not to like?
Also back in their heyday, a lot of people didn't have internet, most had shitty dial-up at best, so it was a rare chance to play multiplayer games and also share games, music, movies and such.
>>
>>733656097
chillin with the bois is the appeal of it.

They still happen in the US too, I guarantee every state has at least one big one at least once a year.
You might have to drive a bit, though.
I'm somewhere in this picture. The lights were only ever on for the Bawls chugging contest.

No matter how young you are, if the concept of chilling with your friends needs to be explained to you. Something is wrong.

hell yeah, anon. god bless the people out there keeping this culture alive. im not even that old and i remember how insanely alive and good the culture was back then at LAN parties. professionally organized and just at a friends house; it was all awesome. Miss playing CS and Quake with my bros. Most of them have moved and are busy with family, so no time for degenerate LAN parties that much, even though we all want to do it. at least my alpha cousin tells me all about how nice his LAN meetups are. I've told him to really treasure these times as they will one day pass.

You'll make it happen someday bro.
The bittersweet part of adulthood is getting excited to finally do something you used to do willy nilly as a youngster, I've been there a lot too lately, good on you passing it on to your kin anon.
Pic related is last year's LANfest in Colorado, they might go back to doing it twice a year like they did before COVID
>>
My buddies and I organized local ones when we were teenagers. The older guys who used to host them stopped for one reason or another, at one point we had 3 big events. We'd host one in summer and one in winter, we always had 100-250 people attending, it was awesome.

WoW and every house having cheap, fast internet killed it. The effort of getting together was too much when you could just sit at home and shout over ventrilo

There's something special about LAN party porn.
Entire DVD rips instead of grainy 2004 internet video, and hilarious english dub hentai.
>>
>>733657657
I have to run extension cords from different parts of my house to accommodate LAN parties I throw now. The actual LAN party room can only handle 6 PCs and monitors before the breaker pops.

>>
>>733656097
besides the best way to hang out with friends and meeting new ones, for games like counter-strike, its absolutely best way to play because you essentially have zero latency between all each other (if the homies are actually hosting locally), unironically id fucking go to lan centers to play counter-strike competitively if LANs were more popular in the US
>>
>>733658029
You underestimate the pure retardation of the current gen. Even the most autistic retard posting here had at least one RL friend in the 90s and early 00s.

Well you get with a group of friends and play videogames in the same room, pass chips, buy beers, some people also mix in some Magic The Gathering cards. Make a small tournament with your friends etc.

You've just made me realize zoomers never sat in the same room eating pizza, drinking beers and having a good time with their friends.
Playing over the grooming app discord isn't the fucking same. Online is inferior to sitting with your bros.
>>
>>733663194

>>

>>
>>733656097
You're not a zoomer. You're an unc who went to lan parties and wanna flaunt that you think Zoomers don't have basic cultural understanding of anything that isn't brainrotted.
>>
>>733656097
It's the only way to play with friends without laggy connections because dial ups fucking sucks. Younger generation and nostalgic retards may see it as a bygone form of socialization, but back then we see it as a way for us to PWN each other without some typing "LAG" in all caps.
>>
>>733656097
>all those shirtless guys
Imagine the smell...
>>
>>733665019
They smell better than zoomer retards.
>>
Imagine being with your friends and having zero fear of being banned for offending someone or saying something inappropriate. No matchmaking, no mods, no banning, no random retards on the internet. Ordering a pizza, just having fun in real life.

I feel for you, you grew up not even knowing what it's like to call someone a gay retard when gaming and see their face, let alone get permabanned.

Me and my buddies played CS, wolf:ET, and age of empires 2 mostly at lans, it was fun.
And it was also a treasure trove of movies&shows&porn that was shared, everybody put his pirated stuff on a shared map for everybody to download.
Usually went home with hundreds of new movies and a bunch of new tv shows.

It was novel at the time, you couldn't just text your friends, steam wasn't a thing. The most you could hope for was to have a chat session open on msn messenger and try to enter the same server on gamespy together.

0 ping with your stinky bros, it was good times

kind off. In my local cyber cafe's lan parties' case, there was a slutty twink we would take turn fucking in the restroom. He would bring a siphon with carbonated water and wash his asshole off with that in between creampies.

Before the age of high speed internet and VC chart programs especially Discord it was the only way to have proper non laggy PVP in games.

Nowadays its just nostalgia.
Playing whit friends on discord is more or less the same shit we just dont get to smell one another anymore or carry heavy hardware.
