You and all your cool friends (plus Ethan, your best bro's little brother) get to hang out shooting the shit while playing games you like instead of having to do so over spotty, inconsistent Internet connections with mediocre VOIP systems.One of those has been fixed and one of those is "better." But even in the modern day, there is a deep satisfaction of just being around other peeps who love a game.. just playing the game with them.
It's less about playing games on LAN together and more about playing Cave Explorer with your bros once your PCs being all together heated the room and got everyone sweaty.But also in the 90's/early 2000's, high speed internet was a luxury. LAN parties were the only way for lots of people to play with zero lag.
Back then, a lot of people had dialup or shitty DSL Internet, so to be able to play in person with your friends or a get-together (LANParty.com had dozens daily across the United States alone during its peak) and enjoy 0 ping multiplayer action with no packet loss was a major appeal. It also gave you social interaction during a time before Mumble, Discord, Xbox Live, Ventrillo, etc. A lot of non-Valve multiplayer PC games didn't have built in voice chat, so being able to hear people react in real time to the game was fun.Also just in general, people hadn't been ruined by smartphones and social media yet.

My buddies and I organized local ones when we were teenagers. The older guys who used to host them stopped for one reason or another, at one point we had 3 big events. We'd host one in summer and one in winter, we always had 100-250 people attending, it was awesome.WoW and every house having cheap, fast internet killed it. The effort of getting together was too much when you could just sit at home and shout over ventrilo
