Why is it so rare to see games with a pulp or sword and sorcery setting and characters?
They come out all the time, you just don't like them
>>733661386those characters are in every single fantasy game, why are you retarded?
>>733661386Chuds lost
>>733661386Theres a subset of people who think its toxic masculinity or want stories to be full of "morally grey" people and monsters or outright subversion.
the people who created those classics had way more talent, practice, skill and understanding than what the concept requires. sword and sorcery pulp is so easy to make that a half-illiterate moron can do it, which is why there's so much forgettable garbage that it's been reduced to a point of reference for other kinds of fantasy and video games. it's all a vibe now, a collection of tropes to self-consciously pick and choose the least offensive options from. there is no visceral stimulation, no actual pulp in any of it. everything is grab-asstic adventure time reddit fag shit. we are in for a little wave of that actually, so get ready to see a bunch of 'old school' slop, if you haven't noticed it already
>>733661386generic kitchen sink fantasy is more palatable to the unwashed masses
>>733661386Because it's western style and western games devs are infested with faggots and women.
>>733662691Many of these stories are full of "morally grey" people. Elric is the original antihero.
>>733661386not a problem in project nortubel
>>733661386because pulp literature and old school fantasy is meant to be sincere and magical, rendering it incompatible with irony poison millenials so what you get is "trope subversion/awareness" and the same cheap warcraft moba aesthetics
>>733662787ok, so how you 'fix' sword and sorcery?really like to know.
>>733661386I was going to write some reccomendations but then I realized the list is too long making chuddy OP's point null so i'll just leave you with:>faggot
>>7336614785 games
Crazy that not a single game has been posted in this thread, I'll start.Golden Axe.
>>733663970there's no intrinsic problem with the genre that needs to be fixed. it needs good writing and it needs good illustration. there's no special trick to get around it. people nowadays are getting their information third-hand from watered down, ahistorical clickbait propaganda and not reading about history or mythology or the old adventure stories that inspired much of the writing that went into what we consider the classics of sword and sorcery. when the people who want to be writers do look at this old stuff, it's only because they want to trawl for material that would be easy to copy or use as a reference to 'get the vibe' of the story without having to develop their own imaginations. it's not as thought we're talking about high art here; pulp fiction was made quick and cheap and mostly concerned stereotypically hot-blooded american male interests. it doesn't have to be some erudite thing, but you have to have some kind of passion and the kind of language to be able to convey it. millennial therapy talk is absolutely not going to cut it. nobody will even read un-molested old arthurian stuff. everything has to either be like a video game or movie. even something lukewarm like Dragonlance can't exist in the market today without having to be watered down and made less 'problematic'. of course it didn't sell when they did so, because they ruined it in the process. what else can you expect? there's nothing to be done about it when the simplest solution, 'JUST READ GOOD BOOKS' gets further and further out of reach of people every day. they just don't give a fuck. the kids, who increasingly can't read at all, don't give a fuck.
>>733661386Because it's a genre for secondaries. No one can ever recount A SINGLE plot point of ONE (1) pulp novel, they just see the porn on the box art and go "unga bunga". I'm fine with niggas not reading, what's unacceptable is the only reference point for the genre being fucking Berserk.
>>733661386don't souls games fall pretty heavily into that? what with the ancient evils and fallen kingdoms and corrupting sorcery and a chosen one who keeps the world going for a while through sheer force of willthey always struck me as classic pulp mixed with a heavy dose of Dying Earth
>>733667205souls games are sickdark not pulp
