He protects humans, and those who are against humans are mavericks. Energy crisis means he has a trolley problem situation in his hands and chooses humans, making Zero and his friends mavericks. A believable setup for X becoming an ambiguous villain, thrown away for no reason. I still like the end result though, Copy X shows what X could've been.

X's entire thing is that he is literally the only reploid with a fully functioning moral core that prevents him from ever going evil. It would make more sense for him to retire as a pacifist if it ever got to the point he got tired of fighting/he was forced to make a bad decision, or even if he killed himself as what happened in the canon. Inafune shows he lacks understanding of X's, and by extension his mentor's, character by making it so X would willingly enslave an entire race and genocide another just to main a "utopia".

A fully functional moral core just means he has a conscience. Just like a real human. It's not a magic moral compass that will always magically point him to the correct moral choice in every situation, he still has to think. Copy X believes he is doing good by protecting humans.
